Celtics may look to add depth via Euroleague with reports of Zach Auguste, Nigel Hayes workouts
Boston may again look across the pond for some rotation help.
The Boston Celtics may again raid the Euroleague for some depth in their 2021-22 campaign with reports surfacing that the team is planning on working our a pair of players from across the pond this week.
Sportando’s Emiliano Carchia is reporting that the Celtics will work out Panathinaikos’ Zach Auguste and Žalgiris’ Nigel Hayes this week. Auguste is a 28-year-old center who logged 4.6 points and 2.3 rebounds per game in the Euroleague last season, while Hayes — a 26-year-old forward — shot 44.3% from deep overseas last season while putting up 9.5 points, 3.9 boards, and 1.2 assists per game.
While Auguste’s case do not immediately pop based on those numbers, it’s easy to see the potential for a shooter on the wing with the size to play 2 through 4 at 6-foot-7.

We may end up seeing one or both as part of the Celtics’ Las Vegas Summer League squad rotation on a camp deal if their workouts with Boston go well.

Lakers’ Kostas Antetokounmpo reportedly signs with LDLC ASVEL of EuroLeague
Kostas Antetokounmpo is officially leaving the Los Angeles Lakers to play overseas.
The Los Angeles Lakers will have a busy time in the free-agent market this season as the team is slated to have over 10 free agents.
However, the future of one of those free agents has already been decided.
Kostas Antetokounmpo, who signed with the Lakers on a two-way deal in 2019, is leaving the team to sign with LDLC ASVEL of France in the EuroLeague.
Antetokounmpo was slated to be a restricted free agent this summer, and the Lakers could’ve matched any potential offers to retain him.
However, the 23-year-old big man won’t be playing in the NBA for the foreseeable future.
The EuroLeague released a statement on Antetokounmpo’s signing, via EuroHoops:
“LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne added size and athleticism to its frontcourt by signing Kostas Antetokounmpo to a two-year deal, the club announced on Friday.”
Listed at 6″10″, Antetokounmpo primarily played at center in his limited minutes off the bench, usually transpiring in late-game situations where the result was essentially decided.
Kostas averaged 3.7 minutes in 15 appearances this season, scoring 0.8 points and grabbing 1.3 rebounds.
Antetokounmpo also received interest from other EuroLeague teams, though nothing was officially announced until this move.
The Lakers will have an open two-way spot to fill this summer, and the team has already conducted various workouts ahead of the NBA draft with players who could fill that gap.

Report: EuroLeague teams Olympiacos, Panathinaikos targeting Lakers’ Kostas Antetokounmpo
os Angeles Lakers forward Kostas Antetokounmpo could be playing in Europe next season.
With the Los Angeles Lakers no longer in the NBA playoffs, some players have transitioned their focus to international basketball for upcoming tournaments.
One of those players is big man Kostas Antetokounmpo, who is on a two-way contract with the Lakers.
Antetokounmpo originally signed the two-way deal with L.A. at the start of last season so the Lakers could develop him in the G League and see if he could become a rotational player.
However, through two seasons, Antetokounmpo hasn’t registered many games and minutes with Los Angeles. He appeared in just five games last season for 4 minutes per game. This season, he played in 15 but for only 3.7 minutes.
Now that the season is over for the Lakers, Antetokounmpo is entering restricted free agency. The Lakers can match any offer an NBA team submits for Antetokounmpo, but the 23-year-old big man is drawing interest from Europe, according to Eurohoops:
“Olympiacos Piraeus and Panathinaikos Athens have inquired about big man Kostas Antetokounmpo according to Eurohoops sources. He’s now occupied with the Greek national team ahead of the Olympic qualifying tournament in Canada and will then evaluate the offers he has in order to decide on his future.”
Antetokounmpo hasn’t showcased much promise with the Lakers, though it’s difficult to do that when minutes are scarce.
If there’s not a market for Antetokounmpo in free agency, going to Europe could be a possibility. Both teams targeting him are based in Greece, where Antetokounmpo is from.
If Antetokounmpo opts to depart L.A., the Lakers would have an open two-way roster spot to fill in free agency.

A former Celtics guard is a now a EuroLeague champion
Former Celtic Shane Larkin wins the EuroLeague
An incredible three-year run in Europe has resulted in the most coveted basketball championship outside of the NBA for former Celtics guard Shane Larkin. His Turkish squad Anadolu Efes took home the EuroLeague championship yesterday with an 86-81 comeback win over Barcelona.
Larkin starred as he has for the past three years in Turkey, scoring 21 points while dishing out 3 assists in the deciding victory. The former Celtic defeated a number of former NBA players on Barcelona including Pau Gasol, Nikola Mirotic, and Nick Calathes. For Larkin, it was the culmination of a three-year journey after losing in the EuroLeague championship game in 2018-19 despite an incredible individual performance, having a promising year cut short due to COVID-19, and then ultimately coming out on top in 2020-2021.
Larkin spent five seasons in the NBA, with his most recent stint coming in 2017-2018 for the Boston Celtics.

All-Time Gators Men’s Basketball Bio: Scottie Wilbekin 2010-14
Wilbekin was a part of four-straight Elite 8 teams and went from being a defense-first role player to the premier player in the conference.
Scottie Wilbekin wasn’t supposed to be a dominant college basketball player. He wasn’t supposed to be an important cog in one of the most prolific four years of Florida basketball history. Just a two-star local prospect from The Rock School, he wasn’t highly sought after and wasn’t expected to make major contributions to the Gators.
But he steadily improved every year, and by the time his days in Gainesville were done, he was one of the most valuable players in the entire country and was a key component in leading UF to its first Final Four appearance since 2007.
Wilbekin started his career at Florida heading into the 2010-11 season. Early on, he struggled with his offensive game but shined as a passer and defender. His freshman season, he played in 37 games (starting one) and averaged 2.4 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists. His 61-28 assist-to-turnover ratio was the best on the team, and he nabbed 36 steals as the Gators made it to the first of four-straight Elite Eights during Wilbekin’s career, which they lost to Butler.
His sophomore season, his role was once again largely that of a backup. He played in all 37 games, again making just one start. Despite a decrease in minutes, he slightly improved his points average from 2.4 to 2.6. He began to develop his outside shot, leading the team in three-point percentage at 45.7 percent. Florida returned to the Elite Eight in 2011-12, but lost again at the hands of eventual-champion Louisville.
His junior year was when he really took off, though. He became a starter, starting 29 of 35 games that he appeared in. His points average increased markedly to 9.1 and dished 174 assists, the fifth-best single-season mark in program history. He was named to the SEC All-Defensive team with 53 steals and was an All-SEC honorable mention. He also had the best assist-to-turnover ratio in the league. Still, UF couldn’t get past the Elite Eight for the third-straight season, this time falling to Michigan.
As a senior in 2013-14, Wilbekin was part of a quartet of seniors — along with Casey Prather, Will Yeguete and Patric Young — that led the Gators past the Elite Eight hump and on to the Final Four. Wilbekin had career-highs in points (13.1 per game) and steals (56 on the season). For his efforts, he was named the SEC Player of the Year, as well as cracking All-American, All-SEC and SEC All-Defensive lists. When the Gators won the SEC Tournament with just two losses on the entire season, Wilbekin was named its MVP.
UF returned to the Elite Eight, but this time got past it, beating No. 11 seed Dayton. In the Final Four matchup against Connecticut, Wilbekin was limited by injuries, and with its leader not at 100 percent, Florida struggled accordingly, eventually suffering a 63-53 loss to the Huskies, who went on to beat Kentucky in the National Championship.
Despite his prolific college career, Wilbekin went undrafted in the 2014 NBA Draft, signing with the Cairns Taipans of the NBL in Australia after short stints on the summer league rosters for Memphis and Philadelphia. Wilbekin was one of the best players in the league that season, leading the Taipans to a runner-up finish and being named the club’s MVP.
After that season, he joined the Greek team AEK. In just nine games with the team, he averaged eight points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists. He first played with the Orlando Magic during the summer in 2015, and though he resigned with the Taipans, he opted out of that deal after another summer stint with the Philadelphia 76ers, getting signed to the team’s active roster on a four-year deal. However, he was cut after playing in five preseason games.
He signed with Turkish team Darüşşafaka of the EuroLeague, where he played three seasons, leading it to the playoffs in 2016-17. He also played for the Turkish National Team in 2018 after receiving a Turkish passport. During the EuroCup regular season in 2017-18, Wilbekin was named the league MVP. After Darüşşafaka won the championship, he was also named the EuroCup Finals MVP.
After that season, he signed a two-year deal with Israeli Euro League team Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he has played ever since. Now a veteran, he has become one of the most dominant players in the Euro League. This past January, he signed a three-year extension with Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Wilbekin was a part of four-straight Elite Eight teams and went from being a defense-first role player as a freshman to the premier player in the conference as a senior. Though he never made it in the NBA, that alone is more than enough to make Wilbekin one of the top players from the late-Billy Donovan era.
