Texas A&M’s newest injury report includes a suprising addition

Texas A&M’s newest injury report features several new names, including QB Conner Weigman

Texas A&M’s week 3 matchup takes the Aggies on the road against the Florida Gators in the swamp, which looks like the team’s biggest challenge since their opening-season loss to Notre Dame.

This week, the storyline has been the health of both programs, as the first official mandated player availability features over a dozen Florida players who will either miss the game or are questionable to play, including star wide receiver Eugene Wilson.

For the Aggies, outside of OL Mark Nabou and running back Ruben Owens, who is out for the season, linebacker Scooby Williams was the only starter listed as questionable after missing last weekend’s win over McNeese State. However, things have changed after the most recent practice.

In the newest report, starting quarterback Conner Weigman has been added to the list as questionable, while starting cornerback Tyreek Chappell and safety Trey Jones are listed as out. Chappell’s injury is rumored to be long term according to a source.

Per the designated rules, here is what every term ranging from out, doubtful, questionable, and probable means:

  • Out: 0% chance to play
  • Doubtful: 25% chance to play
  • Questionable: 50% chance to play
  • Probable: 75% chance to play

I’d expect Weigman to suit up unless he is dealing with something more significant, but the losses of Chappell and Jones put a hole in the Aggie secondary ahead of the game. If Weigman cannot go, sophomore quarterback Marcel Reed will make his first start of the season.

One of Florida’s top receiving options is on the injury list ahead of facing Texas A&M

One of Florida top receivers is dealing with a lower body injury

Texas A&M (1-1) will head to Gainsville, Florida, to face a shaky but ultimately talented Florida Gators team on Saturday afternoon, as the new head coach, Mike Elko, looks to earn his first SEC victory, as well as A&M’s first conference road win since 2021.

On Wednesday, the first official injury report provided by both programs revealed that Florida is facing serious injury issues ahead of the matchup. One of the team’s top receiving options is sophomore wideout Eugene Wilson, who is questionable after sustaining a lower-body injury.

Elko and his staff will prepare to face a two-quarterback system with veteran Graham Mertz and freshman phenom DJ Lagway trading snaps. However, how both will be used is still up in the air, as Lagway provides more upside in the deep passing game, while Mertz is reliable and steady in the pocket.

For both to succeed against Texas A&M’s secondary, Wilson, who leads the Gators with 13 receptions, 191 yards, and two touchdowns this season, possesses the speed to stretch the field. Texas A&M’s defense has not faced a receiver of Wilson’s skillset in two games.

Updated Injury Report for Texas A&M vs Florida

The injury reports have been updated and the Texas A&M Aggies are in good shape, but Florida’s report is longer than a CVS receipt

The SEC announced prior to the season that teams must follow new guidelines when they report about player’s availability. It’s called the “Availability Report“, and the teams must provide an initial injury report on Wednesday followed by a daily update with the final report 90 minutes before the game.

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko gave his thoughts on the new process as this week will be the first time the Aggies will need to abide by the new rules this season.

“I think it’s a good thing, as long as there’s some standardized enforcement of how the thing is operated…I think it’s a good thing. I think, obviously, there’s more — it’s becoming more and more like pro football every year. It’s something that’s been around the NFL for a long time and I think it’ll work well in college as well.”

CBS Sports explains why you should pick Florida in College Football 25

Brad Crawford prefers to the Florida Gators on College Football 25 with a true freshman under center.

EA Sports College Football 25 was released on Monday to those who ordered the deluxe version of the game or have an EA Play membership, giving the world an early view of the highly-anticipated video game.

The sports media has pounced on the topic since its 4 p.m. ET release and many have already expressed their excitement after playing the first update to the game in over a decade. CBS Sports had its staff try out all 134 teams featured in EA Sports’ latest offering, with Brad Crawford drawing the Southeastern Conference.

That includes the Florida Gators — a program that he decided to mix things up under center to see what the squad can do on offense.

“We’re not downing [autotag]Graham Mertz[/autotag] here, but go ahead and rip the band-aid off in Gainesville with a freshman starter at quarterback and see what you can get out of five-star [autotag]DJ Lagway[/autotag],” Crawford said. “Throw it to wideout [autotag]Eugene Wilson[/autotag], who might be the SEC’s best-kept secret.

According to the in-game ratings, Mertz is valued at 84 while Lagway gets an 80 rating in his true freshman year. Wilson earns an 86 rating, but do not sleep on incoming transfer [autotag]Elijhah Badger[/autotag], who earned an 85 rating.

Running back [autotag]Montrell Johnson[/autotag] and offensive lineman [autotag]Jake Slaughter[/autotag] hold the best rating on the offensive side of the ball at 87.

Pair of Florida football freshmen earn All-American honors

These two freshmen Gators are a good reason to feel good about Florida football in the near future.

The Football Writers Association of America announced their Freshman All-American list on Tuesday, which included a pair of standout members of the Florida Gators program.

Tight end [autotag]Arlis Boardingham[/autotag] and wide receiver [autotag]Eugene Wilson[/autotag] were both recognized after impressive performances in their debut collegiate campaigns for the Orange and Blue. Florida joins the Miami Hurricanes, Oklahoma Sooners and Tulane Green Wave as the only schools to boast two players on the list.

The pair represent the first UF players selected for the honor since 2016. That year, offensive lineman Juwaan Taylor and linebacker David Reese made the first-year cut.

Wilson burst onto the scene in 2023 with his electrifying playmaking, catching the heart and soul of the Gator Nation early on while finishing as one of the bright spots for the future of the program. The Sunshine State product played in 10 games with seven starts, leading the offense in touchdown receptions with six, while finishing second in receptions and yards with 61 and 538, respectively.

Boardingham played in all twelve games with two starts, snagging 26 receptions for 289 yards and four scores while providing needed athleticism at the tight end position. The California native was also recognized by the College Football Network as an honorable mention for Freshman All-American.

Florida’s dynamic wide receiver named 247Sports Freshman All-American

Wide receiver Tre Wilson was named to the 247Sports Freshman All-American team on Tuesday.

Add another piece of hardware to this season’s Florida football mantle!

Wide receiver Eugene “Tre” Wilson was named to the 247Sports Freshman All-American team on Tuesday, following up his inclusion on the All-SEC freshman team last week. The first-year offensive standout was a bright spot in a season clouded with darkness.

“It wasn’t the best season for Florida, but there were some true freshman bright spots for Billy Napier’s club,” 247Sports’ Chris Hummer begins. “None were bigger than Wilson. An underneath threat who caught nearly everything thrown his way, Wilson finished the season with 61 catches for 538 yards and six scores — and zero drops!”

Wilson’s catches and receiving yardage were second on the team to senior wideout Ricky Pearsall; he led the team with six touchdowns through the air.

He also set the Florida single-game freshman record with 11 receptions against then-No. 1 Georgia in Jacksonville at the end of October and earned the Shaun Alexander National Freshman of the Week award after the Arkansas game.

Quartet of Florida football freshmen earn All-SEC honors

These four Gators represent the future of Florida football.

The Southeastern Conference announced its Freshman All-SEC team on Thursday afternoon, which included four Florida football players.

Wide receiver [autotag]Eugene Wilson[/autotag], edge defenders [autotag]Kelby Collins[/autotag] and [autotag]TJ Searcy[/autotag], and safety [autotag]Jordan Castell[/autotag] were among the listed names, giving the Gators a quartet of first-year standouts for the first time since 2012.

The All-SEC team was decided upon by the conference’s coaches.

Wilson, who is the most explosive athlete on the list, finished the season with 61 catches for 538 yards — both of which were second on the team to senior wideout Ricky Pearsall — along with a team-high six touchdowns through the air.

He also set the Florida single-game freshman record with 11 receptions against then-No. 1 Georgia in Jacksonville at the end of October. Wilson also earned the Shaun Alexander National Freshman of the Week award after the Arkansas game.

Collins recorded 23 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and sacks, four quarterback hurries, a pass breakup and a forced fumble in 12 games as a freshman in Gainesville. His presence on the defensive line was key at times for a corps that suffered a great deal of attrition.

Similarly, Searcy also added depth to the D-line making a dozen appearances himself. He finished the fall with 26 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, two quarterback hurries and a forced fumble.

Finally, Castell broke out early in his Gators tenure, emerging as starting-level talent for the team during preseason practice and providing much-needed talent in a disappointing defensive backfield.

He appeared in all 12 games with 11 starts and was Pro Football Focus’ highest-rated run defender among qualified players. Castell was named SEC Freshman of the Week and Shaun Alexander award after the Gators’ Week 3 victory against then-No. 11 Tennessee.

The Gator Nation will have to wait until the Orange and Blue game to see the team back in action. That intrasquad exhibition will take place inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium sometime this coming spring with a date and time yet to be announced.

Florida WR among nation’s top newcomers, per ESPN

ESPN ranked the top “newcomers” in college football this season, and Florida wide receiver Eugene Wilson is expected to have a strong 2023.

It’s always tough to tell which freshman and transfers will have the biggest impacts on their new teams before games are actually played, but ESPN staff writer Tom VanHaaren took on the task of listing the top 50 “newcomers” to college football in 2023.

VanHaaren includes both transfers, such as Colorado‘s Travis Hunter who followed head coach Deion Sanders from Jackson State, and freshmen. Florida’s lone representative is wide receiver [autotag]Eugene Wilson III[/autotag], who rounds out the list at No. 50 among impact newcomers.

“Wilson, the No. 7 athlete in the class, has already made a name for himself,” VanHaaren wrote. “Coach Billy Napier said he thinks Wilson will make the team better. Napier also mentioned Wilson’s speed as an aspect that has stood out, and given that Florida’s offense was ranked 77th in pass yards per game, Wilson and fellow freshman Andy Jean will be welcomed additions.”

It sounds like VanHaaren is hedging his bet a bit by slipping Jean in there as well. Keary Colbert recruited an elite group of receivers, and Ricky Pearsall is the only returning pass catcher with a spot locked up heading into the fall.

It might be worth watching out for Florida’s defensive linemen. The position group was the strongest for Florida in the 2023 cycle, and Justus Boone’s injury open’s the door open for one of the freshmen to step up, especially if Jack Pyburn struggles or gets hurt.

ESPN might be sleeping on some of Florida’s more talented additions over the offseason, but only time will tell how accurate this list is.

Five Florida football commits make Sports Illustrated’s top 99 prospects

Take a look at the five incoming Gators who made the cut for SI’s elite list of recruits.

Florida football is coming off a solid showing on the recruiting front in Billy Napier’s first full year at the helm, cracking a few top-10 rankings while sitting just outside in others. So far, the culmination of the efforts exerted by the coaching staff have yielded some encouraging results in the 2023 cycle.

With the most recent class of prep prospects wrapped up, Sports Illustrated’s John Garcia Jr. ranked the top 99 recruits coming out of high school this year. The Gators were among the schools with the most entries notching five names on the list — tied with the USC Trojans and LSU Tigers for eighth most.

Take a look below at five of the Orange and Blue’s current committed recruits who cracked SI’s top 99 prospects in the 2023 class along with their numbers from the 247Sports composite as well as the On3 consensus.

Highlights from Florida commits over first full weekend high school action

High school football is in full swing and the Florida Gators’ commits are putting up highlight after highlight.

High school football is in full swing across the country and that means there are highlights to watch from Florida’s commitments in the class of 2023.

While everyone was in action, high school clips are tougher to find than college football clips or NFL action. A good chunk of the class has some sort of media available, though, so that’s what we’re looking at here today.

Four-star running back [autotag]Treyaun Webb[/autotag] had the best week with 191 yards on 18 carries in a 48-40 win on Friday. Four-star receiver [autotag]Eugene Wilson III[/autotag] also shined with six catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

[autotag]Aidan Mizell[/autotag] left his game early with an apparent knee injury in the first quarter and didn’t return, but Gator Country’s Nick Marcinko noted that he appeared to be okay watching from the sidelines.

Florida’s quarterback commit, [autotag]Marcus Stokes[/autotag], had a rough day, completing just five of 20 pass attempts for 76 yards and an interception. He did manage to score a rushing touchdown to make up for the turnover, though.

[autotag]Creed Whittemore[/autotag], who is listed as an athlete, was 10-14 for 126 yards and a touchdown Thursday. He added 71 yards on the ground and a pair of scores on a field that was ruined by the weather.

Three-star wide receiver [autotag]Tyree Patterson[/autotag] had a nice 100-yard game with a touchdown despite a team loss Friday.
