Depth Chart: Gators light at WR ahead of Week 11 matchup with South Carolina

The Gators might be thin at wide receiver this weekend when South Carolina comes to the Swamp.

The Florida Gators are still dealing with injuries, particularly at the wide receiver position, according to the Week 11 depth chart update released Wednesday evening.

The team’s leading receiver, [autotag]Justin Shorter[/autotag], is still listed as questionable after missing the Texas A&M game, and backup [autotag]Ja’Quavion Fraziars[/autotag] is out with an upper-body injury. Fraziars made his first-career start against the Aggies last week, so Florida will be down to it’s reserve options on Saturday.

Shorter is still listed as the starter, but freshman [autotag]Caleb Douglas[/autotag] is set to make his first career start if he can’t go. Behind him and [autotag]Xavier Henderson[/autotag] will be Marcus Burke and [autotag]Daejon Reynolds[/autotag] with [autotag]Kahleil Jackson[/autotag] as another option. [autotag]Ricky Pearsall[/autotag] is the starter in the slot.

The wide receiver room isn’t the only position group to deal with injuries. Starting left guard [autotag]Ethan White[/autotag] was added to the injury report and is listed as questionable with an upper-body injury. White is still listed as the starter, but that decision will be made as kickoff approaches.

Freshman kicker [autotag]Trey Smack[/autotag], who has exclusively served as Florida’s kickoff man this season, is out for a second straight week after missing the Texas A&M game. [autotag]Travis Freeman [/autotag]will back up [autotag]Adam Mihalek[/autotag] for all kicking duties.

At linebacker, [autotag]Diwun Black[/autotag] is back on the depth chart and off the injury report. He’s listed as a third-team option behind [autotag]Amari Burney[/autotag] and [autotag]Shemar James[/autotag].

Tight end Keon Zipperer will miss a second-straight game, and that’s all for the depth chart update this week. [autotag]Devin Moore[/autotag], [autotag]Arlis Boardingham[/autotag] and [autotag]Nick Elksnis[/autotag] are all out as well.

2022 Florida Football Season Preview: Offensive Line

Florida’s offensive line was fairly strong in 2021. Returning three starters and adding a preseason AP All-American should help the unit build on what it accomplished last year.

The last group on offense left to go through in Gators Wire’s position-by-position breakdown of the 2022 Florida football roster is the offensive line.

Twenty-two players deep, the offensive line is the biggest group on the list, but [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] has recently said that the team only has around eight players in the position room ready for gameday action. The starting unit seems fairly well-defined as fall camp comes to a close, and there are a few rotational pieces that should lighten the load on those starters.

Guard [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag] was the big addition to the room via the transfer portal, and UF is returning three starters to the line. Last year’s unit was quite strong, allowing just 14 sacks, finishing seventh in college football in average sacks allowed per game and finishing 23rd in team rushing yards per game. If the returning players can build on the SEC experience they’ve gained over the years, and Torrence can live up to his preseason All-American status, then Florida should be in for another strong year up front.

Here are 8 Gators named to East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 watch list

East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 watch list includes these eight Gators.

The East-West Shrine Bowl is a college football tradition that stretches back nearly a full century to 1925 and is the longest-running college all-star football game in the nation. The annual event provides a venue for the top college players to show off their talents in front of NFL scouts as well as a national audience of fans, while also promoting the Shriners Children’s organization and its mission to provide excellent specialty care for children

Recently, the organization released its watch list for 1,000 of the top players on the collegiate gridiron, which included eight Florida Gators. Those named include outside linebacker [autotag]Brenton Cox Jr[/autotag]., safety [autotag]Trey Dean III[/autotag], offensive tackle [autotag]Richard Gouraige[/autotag], inside linebacker [autotag]Ventrell Miller[/autotag], wide receivers [autotag]Ricky Pearsall[/autotag] and [autotag]Justin Shorter[/autotag], as well as offensive guards [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag] and [autotag]Ethan White[/autotag].

The Southeastern Conference was represented by 141 players on the list, with the LSU Tigers landing the most with 18 bayou boys named, while the Tennessee Volunteers and South Carolina Gamecocks both had 14 and  Alabama Crimson Tide notched 12. Florida’s biggest rival, the Georgia Bulldogs, only had nine names mentioned.

The 98th East-West Shrine Bowl is scheduled to take place on February 2, 2023, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This Gator among On3’s top 10 most impactful OL transfers

New Florida Gator O’Cyrus Torrence comes in near the top of On3’s recent list of most impactful offensive line transfer players.

O’Cyrus Torrence comes in at No. 2 in On3’s top 10 most impactful offensive line transfers list ahead of the 2022 season.

Torrence joins first-year head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] in trading Lafayette, Louisiana, for Gainesville, Florida, making the move from the Sun Belt to the SEC. A three-year starter at Louisiana, Torrence is expected to continue in that role in an offense that he already has familiarity with. New Florida offensive coordinator [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag] spent 2018-20 as Louisiana’s offensive coordinator and offensive line coach before his one-year stint with the New York Giants as their offensive line coach last season. It seems familiarity was a big factor in Torrence’s decision to sign with the Gators in January.

It’s not just On3 that is taking notice of the big guy and his dominance in the trenches. Torrence was named to the Walter Camp All-American watch list last month and was named to ESPN’s 2022 way-too-early All-American team back in January. PFF named him the third best interior offensive lineman in college football, highlighting the fact that Torrence has the most pass block snaps played since 2019 without allowing a sack at 1,091.

At 6-foot-5-inch, 335 pounds, Torrence will look to continue to translate that size into dominance in the SEC like he did in the Sun Belt. Watch as he manhandles the Sun Belt competition in this clip.

Torrence is expected to play right guard opposite of left guard [autotag]Ethan White[/autotag] and next to center [autotag]Kingsley Eguakun[/autotag] on the Gators offensive line this season. Torrence will play in his first game as a Florida Gator, alongside head coach Billy Napier, on Saturday, September 3 at home against Utah at 7:00 p.m. EDT on ESPN.
