Why the Jaguars’ front office was so high on rookie CB Jarrian Jones

Why the Jaguars’ front office was so high on rookie CB Jarrian Jones

Jarrian Jones of Florida State was selected by the Jaguars in Round 3, pick No. 96 of last month’s 2024 NFL Draft and could go down as a steal of the draft for Jacksonville.

Jones appeared in 55 games and started 29 from 2019-2023, recording 96 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble, 17 pass breakups, and five interceptions over four seasons with FSU and one year with Mississippi State.

As Jones looks to make an impact in the pros, Jaguars assistant general manager Ethan Waugh talked about his positional versatility and why he will be a good fit for Jacksonville for many years to come.

“I think it’s extremely important. I think if you look at the numbers of corners and nickels drafted in recent years, it’s on the rise,” Waugh suggested on Friday.

“Really, everything that we do, we kind of have to see how it affects the run game, but really more so how it affects the passing game, because that’s how you score points in this league, how you win in league is by throwing the football or defending the pass. So, a guy who can go inside out gives us more flexibility, as offenses move their slots and big guys around, having that flexibility is key.”

Waugh also pointed toward Jones’ positive, energetic attitude since his pre-draft meetings with the Jaguars and joining the team as reasoning for his selection.

“Energy. Personality. I think you’ll see that when you guys get a chance to talk with him, if you haven’t yet. But he’s infectious,” Waugh described Jones.

“He enjoyed being here, he enjoyed talking football, he enjoyed learning football, he enjoyed spending time with the coaches. I think when our coaches spent time with him, asking a player to play inside and outside is more mentally tasking than playing one spot. I think they felt really good about him in that role, so he really impressed us while he was here.”

Jones is primarily projected to play nickel cornerback in Jacksonville’s defensive scheme, with veterans, Tyson Campbell and Ronald Darby, set to start at outside cornerback in 2024. Jones will compete with free agent safety signee, Darnell Savage, at the spot.

Ranking the best moves made by Jags GM Trent Baalke this offseason

Jags fans are split on the offseason that Trent Baalke had as he made both some good and questionable decisions. Here are four moves we felt were his best.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made several changes this offseason, but one area that remained the same was the general manager role. Fans were hoping for sweeping changes as Urban Meyer had already been fired back in December, and firing Baalke would’ve completed that process.

However, that didn’t happen, and owner Shad Khan retained Baalke. That led to a lot of skepticism on the fan’s part early this year and some of it remains, though some fans are coming around to the decision.

As for the offseason Baalke has had, it has been far from perfect. However, he’s had some good moments along the way that could turn the Jags around eventually. That said, over the next few days, we will look at the best and most questionable moves he’s made this offseason.

To start on a positive note, here are four moves we feel was his best this offseason:

Podcast: Discussing Jags’ addition of Ethan Waugh, schedule release

In Episode 12 of @TDJaguarsPod, the Jags Wire crew discussed the newest addition to the Jags’ front office in Ethan Waugh and much more.

The NFL revealed the full schedules of all 32 teams a few weeks ago. As expected, the Jacksonville Jaguars were only given one primetime game in the process, but that didn’t seem to take away from the excitement of their reveal.

In Episode 12 of “Touchdown Jaguars,” Jags Wire contributor Phil Smith and I discussed our thoughts on the Jags’ schedule release. A few topics we went over along the way were the Jags’ late-season primetime matchup against the New York Jets, the lack of early home games, the toughest stretch of the schedule, and much more.

We also discussed the Jags’ addition of assistant general manager Ethan Waugh and what it means for the team. For the fans who missed it, the Jags named Waugh to the staff on May 18 and he will join them after spending 17 seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.

Jags announce hiring of Ethan Waugh as assistant GM, Trent Baalke releases a statement

The #Jaguars have officially announced the signing of Ethan Waugh.

The Jacksonville Jaguars officially announced the hiring of former San Francisco 49ers executive Ethan Waugh as their assistant general manager Wednesday morning. He will join them after spending 17 years with the 49ers, where he worked with Jags general manager Trent Baalke for several years.

With the team announcing the anticipated news, Baalke also issued a statement on the new addition.

“We are excited to add Ethan to our organization,” Baalke said according to the Jags public relations department. “Strengthening the personnel department was a priority this offseason and we are thrilled to make this addition to the team. I enjoyed working alongside Ethan in San Francisco for over a decade, and I know he will work tirelessly to help build a winning organization here in Jacksonville.”

Waugh had multiple roles with the 49ers and worked his way up to a vice president of player personnel title last season in John Lynch’s front office before taking the opportunity with the Jags. His title before that was as the director of college scouting and football systems. Under that title, he oversaw the college scouting group and daily operations, according to the 49ers’ official site.

While Waugh saw the 49ers have some success with Baalke leading the way, he also aided Lynch in getting the team back on its feet after Baalke’s tenure went downhill. That said, his addition seems like a huge plus for the Jags when considering the success the 49ers have had with the draft and in the postseason the last few years.

Podcast: 2022 Jaguars Wire 2.0 mock draft

Our second #Jaguars mock draft is out and it was brought to you by @TDJaguarsPod!

Excitement is at a high right now for football fans as the 2022 NFL Draft is less than a week away. That’s the case for some fans of the Jacksonville Jaguars, too, as the Cardiac Cats have the top pick of the whole event.

With mock drafts being produced at an all-time high, we decided to join the party by making Episode 8 of “Touchdown Jaguars” a mock draft episode. Jags Wire contributor Phil Smith and I did a seven-round mock where we made all 12 selections for the Jags and addressed several holes on the team. We even took a deep dive in the top-4 rounds, where the mock produced four new starters for the Jags (two on offense and two on defense).

We also discussed the report on the Jags looking to name Ethan Waugh their assistant general manager and discussed the news of when the Jags’ full schedule will be announced.

Report: Jags expected to hire 49ers executive Ethan Waugh as their assistant GM

Waugh worked with Baalke during his time in SF, but has also worked with their current GM John Lynch and has helped the team make two postseason trips in the last three years.

As stated by their owner Shad Khan in February, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ scouting department will be getting larger. On Thursday, ESPN’s Nick Wagoner reported that the team has offered San Francisco 49ers executive Ethan Waugh an opportunity to become their assistant general manager.

The deal isn’t done yet, but Waugh is expected to take the offer unless any hiccups occur in the negotiations.

This offseason marked Waugh’s 18th with the 49ers. However, he held his most recent title as the 49ers’ vice president of player personnel since June of last season, so his time with the role was short-lived.

Before acquiring that role, he was the 49ers’ director of college scouting and football systems for three years. According to the 49ers’ official site, his job at that time was to oversee the college scouting staff and the daily operations of the department.

The role he held before that was as the 49ers’ senior player personnel coordinator from 2015-17. The three seasons before that, he was their senior personnel assistant from 2012-14 and was their midwest regional scout from 2008-11.

Waugh’s initial role with the team before the aforementioned scouting titles was as a personnel assistant. Of course, with him being with the 49ers as long as he has, he worked with current Jags general manager Trent Baalke from 2005-16.

During the introductory press conference for new coach Doug Pederson, Khan said the Jags had plans to add an executive vice president of football operations and someone to work under Baalke. However, they put the plans for an EVP on hold, but they now have someone to work under Baalke on the way in Waugh.

Baalke’s time in San Francisco ended disastrously when looking at his struggles to win there his last few seasons, and Waugh was there during that time. However, he’s also played some sort of role in the 49ers’ resurgence under current general manager John Lynch and is coming from a scouting department that has added notables Fred Warner, Deebo Samuel, and George Kittle since Baalke’s departure.
