Oklahoma football notebook: Lincoln Riley, offensive players talk Tuesday

Lincoln Riley along with Jeremiah Hall, Erik Swenson and Theo Wease spoke to the media Tuesday ahead of the regular season finale.

Oklahoma is sitting at 7-2 after their defensive shutdown of Baylor last Saturday night 27-14.

Despite earning their sixth straight win and clinching a spot in the Big 12 title game, the Sooners didn’t make a move in the College Football Playoff rankings remaining at No. 11.

The lack in upward movement likely is a result in a very rare offensive struggle for Lincoln Riley and company against the Bears in the home finale. The offense simply wasn’t very effective, just doing enough to get by and get the win behind a fantastic defensive outing.

After the game, Lincoln Riley made it clear his displeasure with how the offense performed in that game. On Tuesday, he kept that frustration going in his weekly press conference.

Along with Riley, tight end/h-back Jeremiah Hall, offensive lineman Erik Swenson and wide receiver Theo Wease spoke to the media about the latest with the offense. Here is what they had to say.

There is a ton of momentum toward having a 2020 college football season these days. No definite signs, yet, but the season would start less than 100 days from now.

Sooners Wire will be creating player cards for readers to be introduced to the 2020 roster.

Here is No. 77 for Oklahoma.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Name: Erik Swenson

Number: No. 77

Year: Redshirt senior

Position: Offensive line

Hometown: Downers Grove, IL

Height/Weight: 6-foot-5 inches, 314 pounds

A four-star out of the class of 2016, Erik Swenson had 19 Division I offers, and chose the Sooners over schools like Michigan, Ohio State and Notre Dame. He was ranked the No. 15 offensive tackle in the country, and the second-ranked player in the state of Illinois.

Swenson has seen limited action in his time at Oklahoma, playing six games in 2017 and four in 2018, but he played his most ever time last season. He played in ten games, and had eight starts at left tackle.

Despite Swenson starting a majority of last season, his starting spot isn’t set in stone just yet. Offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh’s currently has one of his best ever units. While the starting five might not be his most talented five he’s ever had, the entire offensive line unit top to bottom might be the deepest he’s ever seen at Oklahoma. Redshirt freshman Stacey Wilkins was highly touted, and a progressive offseason could push him into a starting role and someone else out.

Even backup roles will be hard to come by on this o-line unit.

Oklahoma offensive linemen Adrian Ealy exits Big 12 Championship

Adrian Ealy, Oklahoma’s redshirt sophomore offensive linemen, will not be available for the second half

Adrian Ealy, Oklahoma’s redshirt sophomore offensive linemen, will not be available for the second half of the Big 12 Championship between No. 6 Oklahoma and No. 7 Baylor.

Ealy walked off under his own weight at the end of the first quarter but has not re-entered the game. Erik Swenson replaced Ealy following his exit. Swenson is a redshirt junior out of Downers Grove, Illinois.

Oklahoma out-gained Baylor 146-16 in total yardage in the first quarter when Ealy was in, taking a 10-0 lead before going down 13-10 at halftime.

The Sooners lead the Bears 20-13 at the start of the fourth quarter.
