Second player from Penn State has hit the NCAA transfer portal

Enzo Jennings became the second Penn State football player to hit the NCAA transfer portal on Thursday

With the college football regular season essentially wrapped up for the year and the waiting game for bowl announcements lingering, the NCAA’s transfer portal has been pretty active this week around the country. And now, a second Penn State player has reportedly been added to the collective database of players looking to evaluate their options.

Enzo Jennings, a redshirt freshman safety, has reportedly added his name to the transfer portal. Jennings, a former four-star safety in Penn State’s Class of 2020, was a deep reserve for the Nittany Lions and could flourish under a fresh opportunity to gain some more playing time with another program.

Penn State’s defensive secondary was stacked in 2021 and looks to be in pretty good shape even with the number of players expected to no longer be in Happy Valley next season. It is possible Jennings could have worked his way into more of a role in the defense next fall, although he still would have likely been utilized as a backup option.

The NCAA allows student-athletes to enter their name into a database so schools know they can officially have contact with that athlete. This allows student-athletes to evaluate all of their options moving forward, even if it means ultimately switching schools. A good percentage of players do end up leaving for another school once they enter the transfer portal, but it is not unprecedented for a player to decide to stay put and withdraw their name from the transfer portal database. But once a player enters their name in the transfer portal database, their current program is no longer required to stay committed to that player’s scholarship, where available. So there is a risk for any player who isn’t entirely sure they are definitely heading out.

Jennings is the second player from Penn State to hit the transfer portal. Tyler Rudolph, also a safety, previously entered his name in the transfer portal. As of now, it is unknown where Rudolph or Jennings will be heading next.

15 days until Penn State football 2021 season opener

There are now just 15 days to go until Penn State football returns.

Happy Friday! We are officially 15 days away from Penn State football!

Today we will spend some time talking about who currently wears the number 15, Enzo Jennings.

Jennings was a four-star recruit out of Oak Park Michigan. His game was put on notice by several NCAA teams across the country, including Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and Penn State.

Jennings was also a three-time team captain who earned his spot on the Under Armour All-American game roster.

His game also caught the attention of analysts across the nation. A national recruiting analyst described Jennings as a player who is a good athlete overall who has solid, prototypical height for his position.

Jennings also brings a good amount of versatility to Penn State’s defense. He was recruited as a safety and has displayed the ability to play in various coverages.

Jennings enters this season as a redshirt freshman after appearing in just one game last season. Jennings is another player who has shown flashes on the Developmental Squad, including winning Player of the Week after the Maryland game last season.

Penn State currently has a loaded secondary room with a good amount of underclassman waiting to make a name for themselves. With an impressive recruiting class coming in these next few years, especially in 2022, there is a lot of potential for the Nittany Lions to put themselves on the map this season.

The Nittany Lions should be an intriguing team to watch. As they look to bounce back from a disappointing 2020 season, this team has an exciting future ahead of them, and Jennings will continue to be a part of it in 15 days at Camp Randall Stadium against the Wisconsin Badgers.

2021 Penn State depth chart projection: Safety

The status of the safety position at Penn State is pretty good. Projecting the depth chart in 2021…

The safety position together with the defensive backs assembled in Happy Valley is giving Penn State great confidence in the stability and performance of its defensive secondary. Like the defensive backs, Penn State received terrific offseason news with Jaquan Brisker announcing his decision to return for one more season in the blue and white, giving the Nittany Lions one of the best at his position, not just on the team but in the entire Big Ten and, arguably, the nation.

Brisker’s return was a significant one for the Nittany Lions. Having the luxury of having a talent with early NFL draft round projections gives Penn State a valuable asset in the defense. And like the defensive backs bringing back Tariq Castro-Fields, this allows Penn State to work the roster a little bit to address some other possible areas of concern with regard to depth and playmakers.

Penn State will be led with senior players at the safety position no matter who gets paired with Brisker, and the future of the position is already looking to be in solid shape.

So, with all of that in mind, here’s a look at how the safety position may pan out for the Nittany Lions this fall.
