Chiefs sign OL Patrick Omameh to practice squad

A few practice squad transactions and visits for the Chiefs on Saturday.

The Kansas City Chiefs added a new player to the practice squad on Saturday.

According to the NFL’s official transaction report, the Chiefs have signed veteran OL Patrick Omameh to their practice squad. Omameh has bounced around a bit this season splitting time between the Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints practice squads. He was recently claimed by the Saints off of waivers but promptly released after spending just a week with the team.

The Chiefs had the 30-year-old Omameh in for a visit earlier this season prior to him signing to the Raiders’ practice squad. He makes a lot of sense for Kansas City given his ability to plug-in basically anywhere on the offensive line. He has 57 career starts over the past seven seasons, with most of his time spent at left and right guard. He notably started for the Saints at left tackle in 2019 during their Thanksgiving showdown with the Atlanta Falcons. Given the injuries the Chiefs have faced this season, especially at the tackle position, it’s easy to see the appeal here.

In a corresponding move, Kansas City added LB Emmanuel Smith to the practice squad injured list. Smith suffered a hamstring injury during the Chiefs’ Week 15 win over the Saints. It’s unclear how severe his injury is, but Andy Reid described it as a “tweak” after the game. It’s possible that he could return to action this season.

The team also had WR Chad Williams in for another visit. He was recently re-signed to the practice squad and released to make room for former Titans WR Tajae Sharpe.

Chiefs sign LB Emmanuel Smith to practice squad

The Chiefs added a familiar face to the practice squad.

The Kansas City Chiefs added a familiar face to their practice squad on Tuesday.

According to the NFL’s official transaction report, the Chiefs have signed LB Emmanuel Smith to the practice squad. Smith was in Kansas City for a visit last Tuesday. Last season, Smith spent the entire year on the practice squad in Kansas City after joining the team ahead of the start of the season. He signed a reserve/future deal to return to the team in 2020.

During Chiefs’ training camp and prior to the start of the 2020 NFL season, Smith suffered a hamstring injury at practice. The front office chose to waive Smith with an injury designation. He eventually reverted to injured reserve and was released with an injury settlement. That wouldn’t be the end for his story in Kansas City though.

It appears that the 6-4 and 240-pound linebacker is now fully healthy and ready to contribute. The team recently elevated Darius Harris to the 53-man roster. They only had LB Omari Cobb on the practice squad and now will have Smith to pair with him on the scout team.

With the addition of Smith, the Chiefs currently have 13 players on their 16-man practice squad with Jordan Ta’amu still on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Expect the team to perhaps bring in more offensive tackle help on the practice squad with Mitchell Schwartz currently ailing.

Chiefs host LB Emmanuel Smith on a visit

A familiar face was in the building for a visit with the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday.

The Kansas City Chiefs brought in a familiar face for a visit on Tuesday.

According to the NFL’s official transaction report, the team brought linebacker Emmanuel Smith into the facility for a visit. Smith, of course, was previously a member of the practice squad in Kansas City, joining the team at the onset of the 2019 NFL season. He spent the entirety of the 2019 season on the practice squad through Super Bowl LIV, signing a reserve/future deal to return to the team in 2020.

During training camp ahead of the 2020 NFL season, Smith suffered a hamstring injury in practice. This ultimately led to Smith being waived with an injury designation, placed on injured reserve, and eventually released from injured reserve with an injury settlement.

So what has prompted the team to bring Smith in for a visit and potentially bring him back into the fold? Starting LB Anthony Hitchens injured his hand during the Week 5 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. He ended up finishing the game, but he had to sit out a few series with injuries at different junctures. Andy Reid didn’t have an update on Hitchens’ injury after the game or on Monday, so that’s something to keep an eye on.

Perhaps it merely signals that the front office is concerned about having quality depth available on the practice squad. The team recently elevated Darius Harris to the 53-man roster. They currently have no linebackers on the practice squad. At 6-4 and 240 pounds, Smith is fit to play MIKE and SAM positions for Kansas City.

It’s also notable that this is the only visit/workout for the team. On Tuesday, they placed FB Anthony Sherman on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. They’re not yet looking to bring in any replacements in the interim, while he’s away from the team.

Chiefs waive LB Emmanuel Smith from IR with injury settlement

Smith was placed on injured reserve on August 28.

The Kansas City Chiefs made a single transaction on Friday, the eve of the NFL’s 53-man roster deadline.

According to the NFL’s transaction report, the Chiefs have waived LB Emmanuel Smith from their injured reserve list with an injury settlement. Smith was first waived with an injury designation from the 80-man offseason roster on Aug. 27. He’d been dealing with a hamstring injury that kept him out of practice. That transaction made way for veteran free agent C Daniel Kilgore. On Aug. 28, Smith cleared waivers and reverted to injured reserve.

Smith first joined the Chiefs as a practice squad addition at the onset of the 2019 season. He spent the entire season on the Chiefs’ practice squad, including through Super Bowl LIV. He was one of the members of the team to receive a Super Bowl ring during the ceremony over the weekend.

Now that the Chiefs have waived Smith from injured reserve, he’ll be subject to waivers. If he clears waivers he’ll be free to sign with any team. Ultimately, this transaction does nothing to help the Chiefs get any closer to 53 players on the roster. That means the team will have to make all of the necessary roster moves to get down from 80 players tomorrow ahead of the 3:00 p.m. CT deadline.

Chiefs waive injured LB Emmanuel Smith, officially sign C Daniel Kilgore

A veteran center added and a former practice squad linebacker waived.

The Kansas City Chiefs have officially signed former Miami Dolphins center Daniel Kilgore and made a corresponding roster move according to today’s transaction report.

We first got word that the Chiefs would to sign Kilgore a week ago. Yahoo Sports’ Terez Paylor reported the team had brought him in for a tryout and intended to sign him following mandatory COVID-19 screening. Kilgore got the all-clear on his screening and had his tryout with the team just the other day. He’s now officially joined the team with training camp coming to a close over the weekend.

The 32-year-old center is going into his tenth NFL season. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft out of Appalachian State. He was traded to Miami in 2018. He started a total of 17 games at center over the course of two seasons with the Dolphins.

In a corresponding move, the Chiefs have waived linebacker Emmanuel Smith with an injury designation. Smith suffered a hamstring injury in practice recently and sat out the past two practices. Smith first joined the Chiefs’ practice squad at the start of the 2019 season and signed a reserve/future deal to return to the team in 2020. The 6-4 and 240-pound linebacker spent his rookie season in 2018 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If he clears waivers he will revert to the injured reserve list for Kansas City.
