UNC Basketball vs. Syracuse: Game preview, info, prediction and more

Despite its somewhat-new history, UNC-Syracuse basketball games have always proven to be entertaining. The two schools play on Saturday.

On Saturday afternoon inside the Dean Dome, two college basketball heavyweights will battle each other in a crucial ACC matchup.

UNC, in the midst of a 5-game win streak and fresh off a comfortable win against rival NC State, will be hosting Syracuse for a 12 p.m. tip.

This is the most balanced Carolina (12-3, 4-0) team I’ve watched in recent memory. It’s not just one player – like Cole Anthony – trying to do all the scoring. Instead, you’ll have RJ Davis raining threes one night, Armando Bacot recording yet another double-double, or Harrison Ingram dominating the boards in an all-around defensive effort.

The Tar Heels are winning a lot of games this season, particularly since we entered the New Year, thanks to their defense. UNC held a ranked Clemson team to 55 points last Saturday, then a high-scoring NC State team to just 54 points Wednesday night.

Offense is there every night for Carolina, but defense has impressed the most.

Even with former star sharpshooter Joe Girard transferring to Clemson in the offseason, Syracuse is doing just fine. The Orange (11-4, 2-2), who have several quality wins (LSU, Colgate, Oregon) under their belts, are coming off a 10-point road victory at Boston College.

Judah Mintz, an ACC Player of the Year candidate, leads Syracuse offensively with 18.5 points per game. JJ Starling, Chris Bell and Maliq Brown all average double figures, but only two more players average over five points per game.

The Orange have scored 80 points in five of their past seven games, meaning UNC’s defense will have another tough task.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what you should look out for Saturday.

Five-star point guard updates recruitment with top 6

The UNC basketball program cracked the top six for this five-star point guard in the 2024 recruiting class as he makes an update.

The UNC basketball program received some good news on Saturday night just hours after the team won its exhibition game in the Dean Dome.

Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels have made the final six for five-star point guard [autotag]Elliott Cadeau[/autotag]. The talented guard cut his list of 18 offers down to a top six as he will focus on the following schools: North Carolina, Texas Tech, Louisville, Kansas, Texas, and Syracuse.

Cadeau made the announcement on Saturday night, taking to Twitter with a special post for the update in his recruitment. The guard can now take the next steps in his recruitment after the update:

So far, Cadeau has taken a visit to UNC, Louisville, and Texas Tech. He’s ranked No. 8 overall, the No. 1 point guard, and No. 1 player in the state of Missouri per the 247Sports recruiting rankings.

He has not officially set a timetable for a decision but with the updated list, it could come within the next few months.

Five-star point guard says visit to UNC went great

Five-star point guard Elliott Cadeau called his visit to the UNC basketball program a ‘great’ one as he visited last weekend.

The UNC basketball program is hoping to add to future recruiting classes as they are hosting several recruiting prospects here this Fall in Chapel Hill.

Already a few prospects have made their way on campus to visit and among them is five-star point guard [autotag]Elliott Cadeau[/autotag]. The Link Academy product out of Branson, Missouri is ranked as a top 10 player in the 2024 class and the top point guard overall in that recruiting cycle.

Cadeau recently visited UNC for the ‘Live Action’ event this weekend and he came away impressed with the visit.

The recruit told Dushawn London of 247Sports that the visit went great and dished on his experience:

North Carolina: “It was great visit and it was great to see coach Davis again. I’ve known coach Davis for a long time and it was nice to meet his family at his house for breakfast. I also liked the Live action they had.

“They’re message is that they really want me and feel that they can develop me into a pro. They also said if I were to go come I would be a part of a winning organization.”

The 6-foot-1, 165-pound point guard has a total of 17 offers so far in his recruitment and has taken two visits.

Programs like UNC, Louisville, and Texas Tech appear to be the top teams in the running and have either received a visit or will get one in the near future.

UNC head coach Hubert Davis set to visit recruits this week

UNC basketball head coach Hubert Davis is hitting the road for some visits this week, eyeing a pair of top recruits in the 2024 class.

With the high school basketball season approaching, the evaluation periods are here and coaches will be out all around the country making visits to prospects in future classes.

And that includes UNC basketball head coach Hubert Davis.

Davis and his staff will take advantage of this open period here in the next week to focus on some priority targets. With just Zayden High left that has an offer in 2023, UNC will also focus on the 2024 class and building that up after landing a commitment from Drake Powell.

The Tar Heels have just one recruit committed in 2024 but have offers out to several prospects. With a good start to the class, the Tar Heels are hoping to build on that and turn in a Top 10 class for the cycle.

As we head into the weekend, take a look at the prospects that Davis is set to visit next week.
