Browns shake up the protected practice squad list for Week 6

Elijah Benton stands out amongst the 4 protected for Week 6

After a couple of recent defections and promotions, the Cleveland Browns protected list on the Week 6 practice squad looks different than the recent editions.

With RB Dontrell Hilliard now on the active roster and both OT Greg Senat and QB Garrett Gilbert on the Dallas Cowboys’ 53-man active roster, the Browns had to find some new players to protect from other teams signing away.

And mix it up they did. The Browns protected list for Week 6:

S Elijah Benton

DT Joey Ivie

RB John Kelly

PK Matt McCrane

McCrane has been a consistent presence, but the others are almost unprecedented. Protecting Benton, a physically gifted undrafted rookie, could be a sign the Browns think he’s progressing towards the 53-man roster.

Elijah Benton: What the Browns are getting in their UDFA safety

Elijah Benton: What the Browns are getting in their UDFA safety from Liberty

The Cleveland Browns added 15 undrafted free agents. GM Andrew Berry dove deep into some smaller school guys, including two defenders from Liberty. Cleveland is clearly trying to add pieces to the defensive backfield and add more depth to a positional group that lacks superior quality.

Name: Elijah Benton

Position: Safety

School: Liberty

Height: 6-0

Weight: 205 pounds

Strengths: Much like his teammate, Solomon Ajayi, Benton was rumored to be poised for a major pro day, but due to COVID-19 the event was canceled. As stated in the tweet above, Benton has a very impressive 2018 season and really shined in a few games including against Old Dominion where he was named Defensive Player of the Week for accounting for eight tackles and one pass deflection, which came on a key fourth-down play in the fourth quarter. He ended that season with 76 tackles, which tied for the team lead.

Weaknesses: A major jump was expected for Benton in 2019 and although he still had a statistically productive season, like his tape nothing really jumps off the page. Although he hasn’t missed any significant time with injury, his smallish frame could be an indicator of issues to come. Benton didn’t dominate against the lower competition that Liberty faces and there is nothing to indicate that the jump to the NFL will be very easy.

Overall: Benton has an uphill battle to make the final roster. Unless he can show that he can contribute on special teams, I just don’t see any value here or even the potential for Benton to become a consistent contributor. The Browns staff clearly sees something that I do not and the safety depth is weak, but seeing his name on the final roster would be shocking.

Browns UDFA Elijah Benton gets some love from Terry Pluto

Browns UDFA Elijah Benton, a safety from Liberty, gets some love from Terry Pluto of cleveland.com

Terry Pluto is the dean of the Cleveland sports insider community. The longtime Browns (and other sports) analyst at cleveland.com shined a light on an underexposed undrafted free agent for the Browns, Elijah Benton.

Signed after the 2020 NFL Draft as one of 15 UDFAs brought to the Browns by new GM Andrew Berry, Benton is probably a name Cleveland fans should get to know.

Buried in Pluto’s column on Sunday — always a must-read — is a nugget on the physical safety from Liberty:

When it comes to the Browns’ undrafted free agents, a lot has been written about cornerback A.J. Green. But I’ve heard the Browns scouts and coaches are very excited to see if Liberty safety Elijah Benton will look as good on the field as he did on video.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound thumper notched 85 total tackles, 2.5 TFLs, one sack, seven PDs and an INT for the Flames in 2019.
