Elden Ring gets free DLC this week

The first downloadable content for Elden Ring is out very soon.

At long last, Elden Ring is finally getting DLC – and it won’t cost you a dime.

On Tuesday, Bandai Namco announced the free Colosseum update for Elden Ring is coming out on Dec. 7, 2022, for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. This DLC adds numerous PvP modes where fans can participate in duels. Remember those massive arenas in particular areas, like Caelid? You can enter those now and fight others!

No word on how exactly this will work, but there’ll be options for one-on-one brawls and team fights. Check out the announcement trailer below to see all this in action.

“Come forth, warriors, and bask in the glory of the Colosseum,” reads the trailer’s description. “The Colosseums of Limgrave, Leyndell, and Caelid will open their gates, allowing players to engage in battles such as duels, free-for-alls and team fights.”

While there’s been plenty of balance patches and tweaks, this will be Elden Ring‘s first batch of new content. Bandai Namco still isn’t talking about an expansion, but everyone knows it’ll happen eventually. Previous FromSoftware titles, like Dark Souls, have historically had DLC come out roughly one year after a game’s initial launch.

It’s no secret that Elden Ring is 2022’s biggest game. FromSoftware’s latest is leading Game Awards 2022 nominations and has already picked up several wins at the Golden Joysticks.

Upcoming Elden Ring concert puts a jazzy spin on the RPG’s soundtrack

The Elden Ring jazz concert features Grammy-winning artist Kenny Garrett and promises to upend what you know about the RPG’s soundtrack

An Elden Ring concert is taking place on Dec. 3, 2022, but it’s not your standard orchestral affair. It’s a jazz concert featuring Grammy-winning saxophonist Kenny Garrett and internationally renowned trumpeter Takuya Kuroda, and the duo said they’ll be building on the existing score and seeing where the music takes them.

“Jazz has so much potential to express what it is or what we want it to express,” Kuroda said in the concert’s announcement trailer. “No one can expect what’s going to happen. That’s why I think jazz is a good platform for [Elden Ring].”

“Elden Ring is going to be something different than I’ve done before,” Garrett said. “That’s how you become a better musician, and I’m up for the challenge.”

Garrett began as a musician with the Duke Ellington Orchestra and, since 1985, has forged a successful solo career and earned three Grammy Awards. Kuroda studied music at Berklee College in 2003 and has released half a dozen albums since then.

The concert will take place at 9 p.m. Eastern Time in person at The Bourbon Room in Los Angeles and via livestream, viewable in the United States. Tickets for the in-person and livestreamed concert are on sale now and cost $25. A video-on-demand version will be made available at a later date, which will also only be viewable in the United States.

Expect more Elden Ring music a few days after, at The Game Awards 2022 where the game – which sold over 16 million copies in less than a year – secured multiple nominations, including best game.

Elden Ring and indies win big at the Golden Joysticks 2022

The Golden Joysticks 2022 recognized Elden Ring as expected, but also several high-profile indie games

Future announced the Golden Joystick 2022 winners, and to the surprise of few, FromSoftware’s Elden Ring won in several key categories, including ultimate game of the year, critic’s choice, and best visual design. It wasn’t all big budgets and AAA games taking home the sticks, though. A fair few indies left their mark on this year’s awards.

Trailer of the year went to Goat Simulator 3, which is perhaps unsurprising given the marketing tactic of announcing Goat Simulator 3 when Goat Simulator 2 doesn’t actually exist. Vampire Survivors, the roguelike from Poncle that almost instantly became a cult classic, won best breakthrough game, and Manon Gage won best performer for their role as Marissa Marcel in Immortality.

Meanwhile, back on the big-budget front, Horizon Forbidden West won best storytelling, while Stray the cat game won best PlayStation game. Grounded, Obsidian’s backyard survival game, won best Xbox game, and Pokemon Legends: Arceus was recognized as the best Nintendo game.

Genshin Impact was named the best ongoing game – also unsurprising, considering the substantial new expansion HoYoverse released in August – and Final Fantasy XIV was recognized for having the best community support.

Awards season in the games sector is just getting underway. The Game Awards 2022 is coming up on Dec. 8, 2022, with its usual mix of celebration and new reveals.

Ashly Burch (Aloy, Horizon Forbidden West), Christopher Judge (Kratos, God of War: Ragnarok), and Manon Gage (Immortality) lead the nominees for best vocal performance.

Meanwhile, the games for impact category includes I Was a Teenage Exocolonist and As Dusk Falls headline the Games for Impact category, with Tunic, Stray, and Cult of the Lamb among the nominations for best indie game.

Genshin Impact and Final Fantasy XIV are among the nominees for best ongoing game as usual, while The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Starfield, and Resident Evil 4 remake round out the most anticipated game of 2023 category.

The full list of categories and nominees is over at The Game Awards’ official site.

Elden Ring patch 1.07.1 fixes bugs, but not the Black Blade incantation

A brand new Elden Ring patch is now available, and fixes a few bugs, while leaving at least one hanging.

Elden Ring is launching yet another patch to make the game a bit fairer to play.

The last Elden Ring patch we saw introduced sweeping changes to skills, Ashes of War, and PvP play to make Elden Ring more competitive amongst its most dedicated communities.

This patch however is a bit more low-key, as indicated by the small .1 on the end of the patch number 1.07.1. It’s rolling out to all platforms, and will be essential for playing the game online in the future.

[mm-video type=video id=01g2m8fkn1jgaky5rb08 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01g2m8fkn1jgaky5rb08/01g2m8fkn1jgaky5rb08-f22de327c03fbcae479d64868a23d374.jpg]

The first big change affects the Ash of War, Endure. The effect duration has been shortened here, as patch 1.07 might’ve made it stronger than the team expected.

The next big change hits the incantation, Inescapable Frenzy. This one was supposed to have lower FP consumption from patch 1.07, but it never got it. Now, it is finally in effect.

Next, there are also a couple of quick changes to the previous patch notes. Flame of the Fell God and Gurranq’s Beast Claw were noted to be charged, but they’ve never had that ability.

Finally, the incantation, Black Blade, is currently missing a follow up attack when cast from the left hand. We can’t be sure why, but FromSoftware is assuring players that this will be fixed in a future update. The biggest takeaway here is that this is certainly not the end of FromSoftware’s ongoing balance changes and support for Elden Ring.

Make sure to read the full patch notes on Bandai Namco’s site, even if all the information is basically listed above. Dedicated Elden Ring competitive players will be happy to know that FromSoftware has them in mind, but fans that just want more story content will be waiting for future DLC.

Steamforged is making an Elden Ring board game

The creators promise a dark RPG experience full of mystery and rewarding exploration.

An Elden Ring board game is in the works from Steamforged Games, makers of the Dark Souls board game and Resident Evil 2 board game. Steamforged announced the game in a press release (via GamesRadar) and also plans to launch a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign at a later, unspecified date.

Elden Ring is a stunning, genre-defining video game, and we are humbled and privileged to be bringing it to your tabletops,” Steamforged’s chief creative officer Matt Hart said in the press release. ”Fans should expect a dark, richly-realized tabletop world of mystery and peril, with satisfying combat and rewarding exploration. Prepare to lose hours to this game, and to be glad about it.”

The Elden Ring board game features miniature figures of some of the popular RPG’s most iconic characters, including Margit the Fell Omen, Godrick the Grafted, and likely other bosses as well – though probably not Pingu. Unlike many tabletop RPGs of its kind, it won’t use dice. Steamforged wants players to “strategize and adapt their plans during each encounter” – so, just like the video game version of Elden Ring, then.

Steamforged also said the world will unfold as players travel across the board, though the team is keeping the specifics about what that actually means to themselves right now.

Sherwin Matthews, the project’s lead designer, told Wargamer the adaptation will appeal to fans of the original game and tabletop fans who’ve never played FromSoftware’s hit RPG. Expect more details to surface once the game’s Kickstarter campaign goes live.

Cyberpunk 2077 overtakes Elden Ring as most popular game on Steam

Nearly two years after its release, Cyberpunk 2077 is picking up steam again.

Elden Ring might have won a Grand Award at the Tokyo Game Show, the convention’s equivalent of a Game of the Year award, but many players are turning their attention to Cyberpunk 2077 – nearly two years after CD Projekt Red’s futuristic open-world RPG came out.

Steam Charts, a website that tracks how many people are playing a game at a given time on Steam, shows Cyberpunk 2077 has 33,658 players as of Sept. 15, 2022. Meanwhile, as Reddit user Lymbassy first noted, FromSoftware’s Elden Ring has 29,093 players during the same period.

The gap of approximately 4,000 players may seem small, but it is a surprise considering Cyberpunk 2077’s rocky, bug-filled start and delayed expansion content. However, the game shows signs of new life after CDPR introduced Cyberpunk 2077’s long-awaited DLC expansion, Phantom Liberty, in a recent livestream.

Edgerunners, Cyberpunk 2077’s anime adaptation that follows a new protagonist in Night City, also debuted to almost universally positive reviews. It also features a few tie-ins and new side quests in the main game, which may help account for the sudden spike in interest again.

Elden Ring came out on Feb. 25, 2022, and while it launched with a full single-player campaign and robust multiplayer element, fans eagerly await news about upcoming content in the dark fantasy RPG. FromSoftware usually supports its games with new DLC quests and even full campaigns, so it’s likely just a matter of time before news of Elden Ring DLC emerges as well.

Tencent and Sony increase stake in Elden Ring studio FromSoftware

Both companies have collectively bought over 30 percent of the studio behind Dark Souls, Sekiro, and Elden Ring.

Well, this is somewhat a surprise. Tencent and Sony have increased their collective stake in FromSoftware, the studio behind Elden Ring, by more than 30 percent.

Right off the bat, let’s point out that Kadokawa Corporation is still the majority shareholder of FromSoftware — owning 69.66 percent of the studio. However, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) now owns 14.09 percent of FromSoftware, while Tencent subsidiary Sixjoy owns 16.25 percent. So this isn’t anything like, say, PlayStation purchasing Bungie.

Kadokawa Corporation issued a statement regarding the investment by Sony and Tencent.

“FromSoftware decided to conduct the Third-Party Allotment to Sixjoy within the Tencent Group, which has strength in its capabilities to develop and deploy mobile games and other network technologies in the global market including China,” Kadokawa said. “And SIE within the Sony Group, which has strength in its capabilities to deploy IP in games, videos and various other media in the global market, concurrently and separately.”

Pretty bog-standard stock business stuff. FromSoftware’s titles like Dark Souls, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Elden Ring sell well on PlayStation, so it’s understandable why Sony would further invest in the company. Tencent has either increased its stake or purchased numerous game developers recently, so no massive shock there either.

Pingu becomes an Elden Ring boss in this twisted fan-made animation

Everyone’s favorite claymation penguin is now a terrifying Elden Ring monstrosity.

Ah, Pingu — the loveable claymation series about a penguin that wants nothing more than to get in snowball fights and go fishing. An icon to children everywhere, and now he’s an unholy abomination in Elden Ring.

On Wednesday, Ubisoft VFX artist Adrian Mendez shared footage of an original fan-made Unity 3D project that turns Pingu into an Elden Ring boss. The video shows a warehouse-sized version of the adorable antarctic resident bursting out of a volcano as if hell can no longer contain this beast. Before the unsuspecting tarnished can react accordingly, Pingu brings his gargantuan flipper down, squashing our hero before a battle could begin. Nootless tactics, indeed.

Check out the animation for yourself below. It’s pretty short but mighty impressive all the same.

“This is not a game, just a little project,” Mendez said in the video’s description on YouTube. “Sometimes I’m bored…”

You’ve got to admire the creativity. Pingu likely would decimate even the best bosses without much effort. Let’s be real.

It’s not the first time Elden Ring fans have come up with ridiculous crossover videos, either. There’s an infamous Gameboy demake and Indiana Jones’ adventures in the Lands Between.
