After adding Tyrone Wheatley, Broncos expected to hire at least 3 more coaches

The Broncos officially announced Tyrone Wheatley as their new RBs coach on Wednesday. Denver has at least three more hires on the way.

The Denver Broncos have hired Tyrone Wheatley as their new running backs coach, the team announced Wednesday.

Wheatley, 50, had a 10-year career as a running back in the NFL before going on to coach at the college and pro level. He most recently served as the head coach at Morgan State from 2019-2021.

Wheatley becomes the 14th outside hire head coach Nathaniel Hackett has made so far this offseason. At least three more additions are on the way, all from the same team.

The Broncos are expected to hire Los Angeles Rams secondary coach/pass game coordinator Ejiro Evero, Rams assistant special teams coach Dwayne Stukes and L.A.’s assistant defensive line coach, Marcus Dixon.

Evero will be Denver’s defensive coordinator, Stukes will be the special teams coordinator and Dixon will become the defensive line coach, with all three coaches getting promotions after winning Super Bowl LVI.

The Rams are holding their Super Bowl parade in Los Angeles today. The Broncos could make the three hires official as soon as later today, but Thursday might be the most likely day for an announcement.

Broncos hiring UNLV’s defensive coordinator as new LBs coach

UNLV defensive coordinator Peter Hansen worked with ex-Broncos coach Vic Fangio and expected new DC Ejiro Evero in SF from 2011-13.

The Denver Broncos are hiring UNLV defensive coordinator Peter Hansen as their new linebackers coach, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Hansen will replace ex-LBs coach Reggie Herring, who was let go last week.

Hansen, 42, played college football and basketball at Arizona before going on to play one season of semi-pro football in France and two seasons of professional basketball in Denmark. Hansen transitioned to coaching in 2004, joining Palo Alto High School, his alma mater, as a tight ends/defensive ends coach.

He later joined Stanford, first as a strength and conditioning coach (2008) before becoming a defensive assistant (2009-10). Hansen joined the San Francisco 49ers as a defensive assistant/outside linebackers coach in 2011, working under then-defensive coordinator Vic Fangio from 2011-13.

Hansen also overlapped with Los Angeles Rams secondary coach/passing game coordinator Ejiro Evero, who worked in San Francisco from 2011-15. The Broncos are expected to hire Evero as their new defensive coordinator after the Rams play in Super Bowl LVI on Sunday.

After spending three years with the 49ers, Hansen returned to Stanford as an inside linebackers coach in 2014. He coached the Cardinal linebackers for six seasons before being hired by UNLV as defensive coordinator in 2020.

Denver fired Fangio following the 2021 season and replaced him with Nathaniel Hackett. By hiring Evero and Hansen, the Broncos have ensured that elements of Fangio’s successful defensive scheme will remain in Denver.

Broncos targeting 3 coaches for Nathaniel Hackett’s staff

Broncos HC Nathaniel Hackett has made three official hires so far. Three more names to watch: Ejiro Evero (DC), Dwayne Stukes (ST) and Jon Embree (TEs).

After firing former head coach Vic Fangio, the Denver Broncos also parted ways with 11 members of Fangio’s staff.

Former Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett was hired to replace Fangio, and he’s been busy building his own staff.

Denver has already made three hires: ex-Green Bay Packers tight ends coach Justin Outten as offensive coordinator, former Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak as quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator and ex-San Francisco 49ers assistant offensive line coach Butch Barry as OL coach.

The Broncos are now targeting three more coaches: Los Angeles Rams secondary coach/pass game coordinator Ejiro Evero (for defensive coordinator), Rams assistant special teams coach Dwayne Stukes (for ST coordinator) and ex-49ers assistant head coach/tight ends coach Jon Embree (presumably as TEs coach), according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Embree, a former Colorado Buffaloes star and head coach, parted ways with the 49ers after they asked him to take a big pay cut, according to Solomon Wilcots of SiriusXM NFL Radio. Denver will likely face competition for Embree, who is considered a top TEs coach in the NFL.

Evero and Stukes won’t be available to potentially join the Broncos’ staff until after Los Angeles plays in Super Bowl LVI on Sunday.

Report: Broncos plan to hire Rams’ Ejiro Evero as their defensive coordinator

The Broncos didn’t hire Kevin O’Connell, but they’re still stealing planning to steal Ejiro Evero from the Rams’ staff

The Los Angeles Rams are preparing to face the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI, but they’ll also need to get ready for the loss of a key coach on Sean McVay’s staff. According to Mike Klis of 9News in Denver, the Broncos are planning to hire Rams secondary coach and pass game coordinator Ejiro Evero as their new defensive coordinator.

Evero was the leading candidate to land the job a week ago, so this doesn’t come as a major surprise, but it’s excellent news for Evero. He began his tenure with the Rams as their safeties coach in 2017 before being promoted to secondary coach and pass game coordinator this year.

Evero, 41, has coached in the NFL since 2007 when he was on the Buccaneers’ staff for three years as a defensive quality control coach. He then had a stint with the 49ers from 2010-2015 and spent one season with the Packers in 2016 before arriving in Los Angeles five years ago.

Rams’ Ejiro Evero is leading candidate to be Broncos’ defensive coordinator

The Broncos are targeting Ejiro Evero from the Rams to be their next defensive coordinator, making him the leading candidate.

The Denver Broncos may be passing on Kevin O’Connell as their next head coach after hiring Nathaniel Hackett, but they’re not done targeting Los Angeles Rams assistant coaches. According to NFL Network, Rams secondary coach and pass game coordinator Ejiro Evero is the leading candidate to be Hackett’s defensive coordinator in Denver.

That would be a huge move for Evero, who started out with the Rams as their safeties coach in 2017. He was promoted to secondary coach/pass game coordinator this season and has done a great job with the Rams’ defensive backfield, which lost Troy Hill and John Johnson III in free agency.

This would make it two years in a row where a Rams assistant went on to become a defensive coordinator elsewhere. Joe Barry made that jump last offseason when he left the Rams to become the Packers’ defensive coordinator.
