Browns defensive coordinator tracker: Stay up to date as Browns seek to replace Joe Woods

Stay up to date on all defensive coordinator-related news as the Browns look to replace Joe Woods.

There has been a flurry of news flying out of Berea, Ohio after the Cleveland Browns fired defensive coordinator Joe Woods bright and early on Monday morning after fielding one of the worst defenses in the NFL. It was also reported that head coach Kevin Stefanski and special teams coordinator Mike Priefer are safe heading into 2023, so the only turnover will come at the defensive coordinator position and the positions coaches he decides to replace.

As the Browns trek through their hiring process, we have created a one-stop tracker for every piece of news as a new defensive coordinator is identified in Cleveland. This article will continuously be updated throughout the process.

Broncos DC Ejiro Evero is in play as Joe Woods’ replacement

Keep an eye on Ejiro Evero

As the Cleveland Browns look to replace the recently fired Joe Woods and fill their opening at defensive coordinator, they have already requested a flurry of interviews. The Browns have not, however, requested their biggest potential fish yet as he is still under contract for the same role with the Denver Broncos, and is expected to get interviews for a head coaching gig this offseason as well. However, ESPN’s Jake Trotter has reported that Evero remains a name to keep an eye on as the Browns sift through a strong list of candidates.

If Evero is not retained by the Broncos, and if he does not land a head coaching gig, then he is the best candidate on the market for the Browns to pursue.

Broncos coach tracker: Known candidates so far

We are tracking all of the Broncos’ head coach interviews on this page.

After firing Nathaniel Hackett, the Denver Broncos have now begun searching for a new head coach.

Denver’s search committee is led by co-owner/CEO Greg Penner and also includes minority owner Condoleezza Rice and general manager George Paton. Broncos Wire has published a list of 20 potential head coach candidates for the team, but Denver’s interview list will likely be shorter.

Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain wants to play for a winner.

“A coach with a winning attitude, a coach that makes everybody around him better,” Surtain said on Sunday when asked what kind of coach he wants the team to hire. “A coach that leads by example, at least vocally, and just a great coach all around. That’s what I’m looking forward to.”

We will be tracking all of Denver’s coach candidates on this page over the next few weeks, so check back for updates in the coming days.

1. Michigan HC Jim Harbaugh (staying at Michigan)
2. Ex-Saints HC Sean Payton (interview)
3. Broncos DC Ejiro Evero (interview)
4. Cowboys DC Dan Quinn (interview)
5. Rams DC Raheem Morris (interview)
6. 49ers DC DeMeco Ryans (interview)
7. Ex-NFL HC Jim Caldwell (interview)
8. Ex-Stanford HC David Shaw (interview)

The Broncos fired Hackett with two games remaining in the 2022 season. After that, Denver named senior assistant Jerry Rosburg the interim coach to close out the season. Rosburg impressed fans and pundits during his two weeks in charge, but he has hinted that he will step away from coaching this offseason.

Whoever becomes the team’s next head coach will have to make decisions on the rest of Hackett’s holdover coaching staff. The list of strong candidates to remain with the team (if not given a promotion elsewhere) includes Evero and wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni.

After firing Nathaniel Hackett, the Denver Broncos will consider at least one in-house candidate to replace him.

The Broncos will interview defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero early this week, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Evero impressed as a first-year coordinator this season and he is also expected to draw interest from other teams with head coach openings.

There’s been no word yet on if interim head coach Jerry Rosburg will interview for the full-time job after the season. Rosburg has hinted that he might step away from coaching, though, and even if he does interview, he won’t be considered a top candidate.

The top candidates seem to be Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, who will interview virtually this week, and ex-New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, who can interview with the team in person later this month.

Denver will begin requesting interviews with coaches under contract with other teams on Monday, and Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is expected to be on the team’s list, according to Klis.

Broncos Wire has identified 20 potential coach candidates for Denver.

20 head coach candidates for the Broncos

The Broncos will likely consider these candidates during their head coach search.

After firing Nathaniel Hackett, the Denver Broncos are now seeking a new head coach. The Broncos are expected to begin interviewing coach candidates next week after their season ends.

Broncos co-owner/CEO Greg Penner and general manager George Paton have said the team will not rule out inexperienced candidates, but after three failed first-time coaches, it seems reasonable to assume the team will favor more experienced coaches.

Denver will undoubtedly interview inexperienced candidates, but veteran coaches who have already had success in the NFL will likely be considered the favorites to land the job.

With that said, here’s a quick look at 20 candidates who will likely be considered by the Broncos during their search for a head coach.

Report: Vic Fangio is Sean Payton’s ‘preferred choice’ for defensive coordinator

A wrinkle to the Sean Payton possibility — Payton is said to prefer Vic Fangio as his defensive coordinator on his next team.

Sean Payton might be on the verge of returning to the NFL, and his next team will have to compensate the New Orleans Saints (likely with a first-round pick) to acquire the coach.

If Payton does return to the NFL as a head coach, his “preferred choice” for defensive coordinator on his staff will be Vic Fangio, according to a report from Backstage Media’s Michael Silver.

That might complicate things for the Denver Broncos, who are expected to show interest in Payton during their head coach search this offseason.

If the Broncos end up hiring Payton, Fangio would be expected to “look elsewhere” for a DC job, according to Silver. Fangio was fired by Denver following the 2021 season after he went 19-30 in three years as a head coach.

Fangio, understandably, probably isn’t interested in a reunion with the Broncos.

Jim Harbaugh, whom Denver has already reached out to, also has a connection to Fangio. Harbaugh and Fangio coached together with the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-14 and at Stanford (2010). Fangio also worked with Jim’s brother, John Harbaugh, with the Baltimore Ravens (2008-09).

The Broncos likely want to keep current defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, but he is expected to interview for head coach openings this offseason. If Evero does not get a promotion elsewhere, he would likely be a top candidate for the DC job under Denver’s next head coach.

Broncos hope to interview DC Ejiro Evero for HC role

Ejiro Evero is a candidate to interview for the Broncos’ head coach opening at the end of the season.

After firing former head coach Nathaniel Hackett, the first coach the Denver Broncos offered the interim role to was defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero.

Evero turned down the chance to coach on an interim basis for the final two weeks of the season, but he might be a candidate for the full-time job in 2023.

“We hope to interview Ejiro Evero for the position,” general manager George Paton said Tuesday.

Evero turned down the interim role in part because of his relationship with Hackett. Denver then gave the interim gig to senior advisor Jerry Rosburg.

“I’ve been so impressed by our defense,” Rosburg said during his introductory press conference on Wednesday. “Our defense plays with fundamentals. They’re disciplined. You can see there is a team orientation in our defense and how we fit with one another. I’ve been so impressed by him and his staff and how they have operated. After talking with George [Paton], I talked with Ejiro.

“I told him how I respected his decision because of his loyalty and relationship with Nathaniel. My feeling is if that had happened to me with another close friend of mine in my career, I hope I would have done the same thing, but it’s not an easy thing to do. I think he should be recognized for the magnanimous act that he did. Frankly, there are a lot of people who want to be standing up here. He’s highly qualified and he deserved the opportunity to say, ‘Yes.’ He chose to say, ‘No,’ so that’s why I’m standing before you.”

Evero will get another chance to say “Yes” — at least to an interview — at the end of the season. We’ll find out at the end of the season if he wants to.

Ejiro Evero turned down interim head coach role with Broncos

Ejiro Evero is expected to be a head coach candidate in 2023.

After firing head coach Nathaniel Hackett on Monday, the Denver Broncos named senior assistant Jerry Rosburg their interim coach for the final two games of the 2022 season.

Before turning to Rosburg, a 40-year coaching vet, the Broncos first offered the interim role to defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Evero turned down the role and “decided with two weeks left it was best for the team if he keeps working with the defense,” Pelissero reported Monday.

The Broncos’ defense has allowed 20.3 points per game this year, which is tied for seventh-best in the NFL.

Evero, 41, is expected to be a head coach candidate this offseason, and he will likely get an interview for the opening in Denver. Rosburg will hold the interim title for the next two weeks, and then the Broncos will likely make sweeping changes to the coaching staff in 2023.

Ejiro Evero must be top Joe Woods replacement after Nathaniel Hackett firing

The Browns now have their top candidate

The Denver Broncos fired first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett just 16 weeks into his opening campaign. And by doing so, they opened up the top candidate for the Cleveland Browns as they more than likely search for a new defensive coordinator this offseason to replace Joe Woods. Turning down the interim head coaching gig in Denver, defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero may be on the move in two weeks.

While Evero is going to interview for head coaching jobs around the league, the Browns will do their due diligence. And should Evero fail to secure one of the openings that come available, they must be ready to pounce on a promising and young defensive mind like Evero.

This season, the Browns are giving up the most EPA per play on the ground of any defense in the NFL. While Denver’s rush defense is not a top-tier unit against the run either, falling 23rd in the NFL, they are still not giving up positive EPA per play.

Where Evero makes his money, however, is how his unit defends the pass. The Browns have the 11th-best defensive unit against aerial attacks, but the Broncos sit top-five in the same metric even after trading away their best pass rusher in Bradley Chubb at the deadline.

Browns Ejiro Evero Joe Woods

The Broncos also have some talent expected to hit free agency. If the Browns can land Evero, there is a chance that a talent like former Ohio State defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones may be enticed to follow him. Coaching up safety John Johnson III in Los Angeles as well, the Browns may be able to salvage their once-high-profile defensive back.

Jim Leonhard is on the list, and there will be plenty more to interview for the gig in Cleveland this offseason. However, the Browns should have the brink trucks ready to back up for Evero should he find himself in the position to take another defensive coordinator job in 2023.
