Broncos coach update: Sean Payton interview scheduled for Jan. 17

The #Broncos have scheduled an interview with Sean Payton for Jan. 17. Here is the team’s full interview schedule.

The Denver Broncos have scheduled an interview with former New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton for Tuesday, Jan. 17, ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported on Thursday. The in-person interview will be held in Los Angeles.

Payton stepped down from his job with the Saints in 2021, but he is still under contract through the 2024 season. If the Broncos are going to hire Payton, they would need to compensate New Orleans in a trade.

Payton has been endorsed by Denver quarterback Russell Wilson, who has dubbed the coach “one of the world’s best.”

Payton is one of eight known head coach candidates being considered by the Broncos after the team fired Nathaniel Hackett.

Here’s an updated look at the team’s interview schedule:

Jan. 9: Jim Harbaugh (completed, virtual)
Jan. 10: Ejiro Evero (completed)
Jan. 11: Jim Caldwell and David Shaw (both completed)
Jan. 17: Sean Payton and Raheem Morris (both scheduled)
Earliest allowed is Jan. 17: DeMeco Ryans (TBA)
Earliest allowed is Jan. 18: Dan Quinn (TBA)

The Ryans and Quinn interviews will likely be scheduled for next week, perhaps both on Wednesday after the Payton and Morris interviews on Tuesday. We are tracking all of the team’s interviews on this page.

Colts to interview Ejiro Evero for HC job Thursday

The Colts will be interviewing Broncos DC Ejiro Evero for their HC vacancy Thursday.

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to interview Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero for the head coach vacancy Thursday, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

The Colts confirmed Wednesday that they held an in-house interview with special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone so Evero’s interview will be the second that we know about.

You can follow along with the latest updates through our tracker.

Though Evero doesn’t have a ton of experience, he’s a worthy candidate after showing what he could do on the defensive side of the ball. What was even more impressive was his ability to keep the defensive players engaged and passionate despite the failures of the Broncos offense.

Specializing at the defensive back positions, Evero has held plenty of assistant roles throughout his coaching career. Recently, he spent four seasons working as the safeties coach for the Los Angeles Rams (2017-2020) as well as the secondary coach and passing game coordinator (2021).

The head coaching search will be led by general manager Chris Ballard, but the decision ultimately resides with owner Jim Irsay.

Justin Simmons ‘selfishly’ hopes Ejiro Evero remains with Broncos

“I’ve learned so much from him, both on and off the field,” Broncos DB Justin Simmons said of DC Ejiro Evero.

After an impressive first season as a defensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos, Ejiro Evero is drawing interest as a potential head coach candidate.

The Broncos have already interviewed Evero for their own head coach position, and the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts want to interview him as well.

Whether it’s as the head coach or as defensive coordinator, Denver safety Justin Simmons is hoping Evero will remain with the team for at least one more season.

“Selfishly, I would love to be with Coach ‘E,'” Simmons said on Sunday. “Whatever that looks like, head coach, back as d-coordinator again. Selfishly, I would love to be with him. He’s helped my game so much this year. You always learn — just when you think you know a good amount, you always learn so much more from a new mind and a new set of eyes and the way that he coaches and the way that affects coaches, the assistant coaches around the defensive room.”

Simmons totaled a league-high nine forced turnovers (six interceptions and three forced fumbles) in 12 games in 2022. He had the best season of his career in his first year under Evero, a former safety and secondary coach.

“I’m just so thankful for him and his leadership,” Simmons said. “I’ve learned so much from him, both on and off the field. Selflessly, I would really hope he gets that [head coach] job. Obviously, it would be great if it was here, but for him to get that opportunity somewhere, I think he is more than deserving of it. He is just a tremendous leader. I could be up here for hours just talking about how amazing of a coach and a man he is. I’m just really appreciative of him and he deserves it.”

Evero is one of seven known candidates for the Broncos’ head coach opening. Evero does not seem to be a front-runner for Denver’s job, but the 42-year-old coach is likely on his way to becoming a head coach one day. Simmons would like to see that day delayed by one more season, with Evero sticking around as a coordinator in 2023.

Ejiro Evero tracker: 5 teams interested in DC as a HC candidate

After an impressive first season as a defensive coordinator, Ejiro Evero is drawing interest as a head coach candidate.

After one season as defensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos, Ejiro Evero is drawing interest from teams as a potential head coach candidate.

Denver’s defense totaled the 10th-most interceptions (15) and the fifth-most forced fumbles (16) while allowing the 10th-fewest rushing touchdowns (12) and the fifth-fewest passing touchdowns (20) this season.

Evero is an up-and-coming assistant with a bright defensive mind who might be on his way to one day becoming a head coach. We will be tracking all of his head coach interviews on this page in the coming weeks.

So far, these teams have (or plan to) interview Evero.

1. Denver Broncos (interview)
2. Houston Texans (interview)
3. Indianapolis Colts (interview)
4. Arizona Cardinals (interview)
5. Carolina Panthers (interview)

Note: Denver blocked the Atlanta Falcons from interviewing Evero as a defensive coordinator candidate.

At the time of this writing, the Broncos have six other candidates in addition to Evero for their head coach opening.

If Denver ends up hiring another candidate — and if Evero does not get a promotion elsewhere — the Broncos will undoubtedly hope that Evero remains as the team’s defensive coordinator for at least one more season.

The Colts requested to interview Broncos DC Ejiro Evero for their HC job.

The Indianapolis Colts submitted a request to interview Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero for their vacant head coach job, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Be sure to keep up with the latest details of the Colts’ head coaching search with our tracker.

Broncos coach candidate Raheem Morris is a 2-time Super Bowl champion

Broncos HC candidate Raheem Morris won two Super Bowls as an assistant coach. He also has experience as a HC from his time with the Bucs.

The Denver Broncos might try to poach members of the Los Angeles Rams’ defensive coaching staff in consecutive offseasons.

Last year, the Broncos received permission from the Rams to interview secondary coach/passing game coordinator Ejiro Evero for their defensive coordinator position. Evero got the DC job, and he did so well that he’s now a candidate for Denver’s head coach opening.

After firing Nathaniel Hackett, the Broncos have started a search for a new head coach, and they are once again turning to L.A.’s coaching staff.

Denver has asked the Rams for permission to interview defensive coordinator Raheem Morris for their head coach opening, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday.

Morris, 46, went 17-31 as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2009-2011. Later, he went 4-7 as interim coach of the Atlanta Falcons in 2020. Though his win-loss record is not stellar, Morris having head coach experience is notable — the Broncos hired three-straight first-time head coaches from 2017-2022 and might now turn to experienced options.

Morris won Super Bowl XXXVII as a defensive quality control coach with the Bucs in 2002. More recently, he won Super Bowl LVI as a defensive coordinator with the Rams in 2021.

If the Broncos end up hiring Morris, he would reunite with Evero, who got his NFL start as a defensive quality control coach with the Bucs in 2007 while Morris was serving as Tampa Bay’s defensive backs coach. They later won a Super Bowl together in L.A. before Evero left to join Denver’s staff.

#Broncos DC Ejiro Evero is a candidate for the #Texans’ HC job.

The Denver Broncos are not the only team seeking a new head coach this offseason.

Four other teams — the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals — also have head coach openings, and at least one of them will consider a member of Denver’s coaching staff.

The Texans have already asked the Broncos for permission to interview defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Evero is also expected to interview for Denver’s opening.

If the Broncos do not promote Evero, they will undoubtedly hope that he remains with the team as defensive coordinator after an excellent first year on the job in 2022.

Evero is not the only coach who Denver and Houston could be competing for this offseason. The Texans have also requested an interview with San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, as have the Broncos.
