Isaac Cruz brutally knocks out Eduardo Ramirez in second round

Isaac Cruz brutally knocked out Eduardo Ramirez in the second round of a scheduled 10-round lightweight bout Sunday in Los Angeles.

Isaac Cruz made another strong statement.

The Mexican slugger stopped countryman Eduardo Ramirez at 2:27 of the second round of a scheduled 10-round lightweight bout on the Andy Ruiz Jr.-Luis Ortiz card Sunday in Los Angeles.

Cruz (24-2-1, 17 KOs) had some trouble cornering an elusive Ramirez (27-3-3, 12 KOs) in a relatively uneventful opening round.

However, that changed in an instant midway through Round 2, when Cruz put his countryman down and hurt him badly with a perfect left hook to the chin.

The worst was yet to come for Ramirez, as Cruz attacked his wounded prey viciously until a three-punch combination put him on his pants again.

That was enough for referee Jack Reiss, who didn’t hesitate to stop the fight to save Ramirez from further punishment.

“I was ready to win at all costs, for my family,” Cruz said, “and what better way to win than here in front of all the great fans in Los Angeles.”

Afterward, Cruz, a top contender, called out Gervonta Davis, who narrowly outpointed him last December. That fight isn’t likely to happen. However, performances like the one Cruz turned in Sunday keep him in thick of championship hunt.

Eduardo Ramirez stops Miguel Flores with vicious right hook

Eduardo Ramirez stopped Miguel Flores with a vicious right hook in Round 5 on the Errol Spence Jr.-Danny Garcia card Saturday.

Eduardo Ramirez is on a roll.

The Mexican, coming off an impressive stoppage of Leduan Barthelemy 13 months ago, knocked out Miguel Flores with a single right hook in the fifth round on the Errol Spence Jr.-Danny Garcia card Saturday in Arlington, Texas.

The fight was designated as a 126-pound title eliminator.

Ramirez (24-2-3, 10 KOs) isn’t known as a puncher but he can box, as he demonstrated in four-plus rounds at AT&T Stadium.

The 27-year-old southpaw controlled the fight from the outset, dictating the pace, beating Flores to the punch, outworking him and landing the bigger shots to win the first four rounds on the Boxing Junkie card.

Flores (24-4, 12 KOs) had his moments, particularly in a competitive fourth round that seemed to give him hope of climbing back into the fight. In particular, he landed some hard, eye-catching body shots that Ramirez felt.

However, only seconds in Round 5, Flores was throwing a straight right when he got caught with a vicious right hook that put him on his back. He got up at the count of seven but turned away from referee Laurence Cole and stumbled, prompting Cole to wave off the fight.

The official time was 20 seconds into the round.

Flores was a late replacement for Julia Ceja, who had to pull out after testing positive for COVID-19.

Barthelemy-Ramirez to replace canceled Nery-Rodriguez on Fox Pay-Per-View

Leduan Barthelemy vs. Eduardo Ramirez will replace the canceled Luis Nery vs. Emmanuel Rodriguez fight on pay-per-view tonight.

LAS VEGAS – Luis Nery’s inability to make weight was a break for Leduan Barthelemy and Eduardo Ramirez on the Deontay Wilder-Luis Ortiz II card Saturday at MGM Grand.

Nery on Friday failed to make the 118-pound limit by one pound for his bantamweight fight against Emmanuel Rodriguez and evidently didn’t believe he could lose it in subsequent attempts to make weight. Rodriguez, who made weight, then decided not to face an over-the-weight opponent because of “safety reasons”and the fight was canceled, according to a news release.

As a result, the featherweight fight between Barthelemy and Ramirez, originally scheduled to be televised on FS2, will kick off the Pay-Per-View portion of the card.

Barthelemy (15-0-1, 7 KOs) and Ramirez (22-2-3, 9 KOs), a former title challenger, fought to a 10-round draw in September 2017.

Also, Julio Ceja was 4½ pounds over the 122-limit for his fight against Brandon Figueroa but the fight will go on. Figueroa weighed 122.
