UFC on ESPN 44 results: Edson Barboza slumps Billy Quarantillo with vicious knee KO

Edson Barboza added another incredible knockout to his highlight reel when he put Billy Quarantillo out with a knee at UFC on ESPN 44.

[autotag]Edson Barboza[/autotag] proved he’s still dangerous as ever when he added [autotag]Billy Quarantillo[/autotag] to his highlight reel at UFC on ESPN 44.

Barboza (23-11 MMA, 17-11 UFC), one of the most decorated knockout artists in UFC history, scored an absolutely perfect counter-knee knockout on Quarantillo (17-5 MMA, 5-3 UFC) in Saturday’s featherweight headliner, which took place at T-Mobile Center.

Quarantillo fought somewhat recklessly in the early going, leading him straight into a right knee from Barboza that slumped him face-first into the canvas.

Check out the replay below (via Twitter):

Barboza, who made his UFC debut in November 2010, made it clear that at 37, he still feels he has a lot left to give in the sport. He wants to show as much by fighting an opponent above him in the rankings.

“Please, someone in front of me in the rankings,” Barboza said in his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier. “Guys, Edson Barboza is still here. I’m in the best shape of my life and I promise the next performance will be even better.”

UFC on ESPN 44: Barboza vs. Quarantillo picks and predictions

Records: Barboza (22-11-0) | Quarantillo (17-4-0)

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

QUARANTILLO (-175) is a little pricey, but he is worth the play.

The younger fighter has a slight reach advantage, although Barboza is the more prolific puncher by far. The Brazilian has a 7.24-to-3.40 significant strikes landed per minute advantage.

However, Quarantillo is much better on the mat and has been fighting better than Barboza in recent years. Quarantillo holds a 1.35-to-0.29 takedown average, and he’ll be looking to get this fight to the mat as quickly as possible.

METHOD OF VICTORY – 7-WAY: QUARANTILLO BY SUBMISSION (+650) is worth a look for a chance to multiply your initial wager by 6 1/2 times.

In addition, if you go want to get specific with the submission and exact outcome, roll with FIGHT – EXACT OUTCOME: QUARANTILLO BY REAR NAKED CHOKE (+800).

Over/Under (O/U)

WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? NO (-135) is the way to go because I believe Quarantillo will get the stoppage.

It’s rather specific, but playing ROUND BETTING: QUARANTILLO IN ROUND 2 (+550) is also worth a look, too. In 2 of his past 4 stoppages, he has won in Round 2, including his most recent submission victory.

Five years after its first visit, the UFCc is back in an historic Midwest city this week with a former featherweight champion on the top of the card.

UFC on ESPN 44 takes place Saturday at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo. The main card airs on ESPN following prelims on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, former featherweight champion [autotag]Max Holloway[/autotag] (23-7 MMA, 19-7 UFC) takes on England’s [autotag]Arnold Allen[/autotag] (19-1 MMA, 10-0 UFC), who is unbeaten in the UFC. Holloway is nearly a 2-1 favorite at the betting window, and our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers have him in a rout at 9-2.

In the co-feature, [autotag]Edson Barboza[/autotag] (22-11 MMA, 16-11 UFC) meets [autotag]Billy Quarantillo[/autotag] (17-4 MMA, 5-2 UFC) in another potential featherweight banger. Quarantillo is a -175 favorite, but it’s elite striker Barboza who has the slimmest possible edge in the picks at 6-5.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Dustin Jacoby[/autotag] (18-6-1 MMA, 6-3-1 UFC) fights [autotag]Azamat Murzakanov[/autotag] (12-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) at light heavyweight, and even though he’s a -165 favorite, it’s Murzakanov who has a near-shutout in the picks as an underdog at 10-1.

Another fight at 205 pounds sees [autotag]Tanner Boser[/autotag] (20-9-1 MMA, 4-4 UFC) take on [autotag]Ion Cutelaba[/autotag] (16-9-1 MMA, 5-8-1 UFC). Cutelaba is a slight favorite at -135, but Boser has a big 9-2 picks lead.

[autotag]Chris Gutierrez[/autotag] (19-3-2 MMA, 7-1-1 UFC) is more than a 2-1 favorite against [autotag]Pedro Munhoz[/autotag] (19-7 MMA, 9-7 UFC) in their bantamweight bout, and he’s our lone unanimous pick from our staff members at 11-0.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Rafa Garcia[/autotag] (15-3 MMA, 3-3 UFC) takes on longtime lightweight and UFC Hall of Famer [autotag]Clay Guida[/autotag] (38-22 MMA, 18-16 UFC). Garcia is the biggest favorite on the entire card at -275, but the picks didn’t play out that way. Underdog Guida has a 7-4 lead from our pickers.

UFC on ESPN 44’s Billy Quarantillo admits Edson Barboza’s highlight reel ‘definitely intimidating’

Billy Quarantillo says Edson Barboza is “easily the toughest opponent I’ve ever fought” ahead of their UFC on ESPN 44 co-main event.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – [autotag]Billy Quarantillo[/autotag] knows he’s in for a stern challenge against [autotag]Edson Barboza[/autotag] at UFC on ESPN 44.

Quarantillo (17-4 MMA, 5-2 UFC) meets Barboza (22-11 MMA, 16-11 UFC) in Saturday’s co-main event at T-Mobile Center. The main card airs on ESPN following prelims on ESPN+.

Barboza has alternated wins and losses as of late but remains one of the most devastating knockout artists in the sport. From his 2012 wheel-kick knockout of Terry Etim, to his flying knee knockout of Beneil Dariush, to his one-punch finish of Shane Burgos, Quarantillo knows just how dangerous Barboza is.

“This is easily the toughest opponent I’ve ever fought. This is the biggest fight of my career,” Quarantillo told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s media day. “This fight has the potential to do the most for my career, get me to that next level, get me even bigger names down the road, that top-15 ranking. So obviously I’m super excited about this one.”

He continued, “It’s definitely intimidating watching his highlight reel, and it’s a highlight reel I’ve watched as a fan.”

[lawrence-related id=2633190,2613361,2604077]

Quarantillo has competed against some solid names such as Burgos and Alexander Hernandez at featherweight, but none with the name value and experience of Barboza.

“I think it’s going to put my name up there, more mainstream, with a lot more casual fans,” Quarantillo said. “Being the co-main event, if I can go out there and get a huge finish, it puts me into that next level of UFC fighter where – I always joke about, there’s like that row of UFC fighters, and they go by the row and it’s like, ‘I know this guy, this guy, this guy.’ Hopefully I can get invited to that row after this fight, and that’s where it puts me.”

UFC on ESPN 44 pre-event facts: Will Arnold Allen crack Max Holloway’s historic chin?

In the main event, the stakes don’t get much higher than the clash of featherweight contenders. Former longtime UFC champ [autotag]Max Holloway[/autotag] (23-7 MMA, 19-7 UFC) looks to begin another run toward the belt when he takes on [autotag]Arnold Allen[/autotag] (19-1 MMA, 10-0 UFC), who is unbeaten inside the octagon thus far.

UFC on ESPN 44’s Edson Barboza dubs himself ‘King of the Co-Main Event’ ahead of bout vs. Billy Quarantillo

Edson Barboza is on the verge of his ninth co-main event, where he will take on Billy Quarantillo at UFC on ESPN 44 in Kansas City, Mo.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Always a bridesmaid, never the bride.

While the famous idiom doesn’t exactly fit Edson Barboza’s UFC career when it comes to card placement, that’s the vibe he’s feeling ahead of his ninth co-main event bout. At UFC on ESPN 44 at T-Mobile Center, Barboza (22-11 MMA, 16-11 UFC) takes on Billy Quarantillo in a featherweight clash.

Barboza may be near double-digit co-features, but the fact is he has indeed been a UFC main eventer – three times. So, the flashy Brazilian striker knows what it feels like to be the center of attention. However, Saturday, it’s another co-main event, as he will look to snap a two-fight skid by defeating Quarantillo (17-4 MMA, 5-2 UFC).

“I think I’m the ‘King of the Co-Main Event,'” Barboza joked when speaking to MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s media day. “Nobody in the UFC have the co-main event more than me.”

Barboza has gone 5-3 in UFC co-main events, and is ready to ensure that Quarantillo will be the sixth victory as he hunts for another main event opportunity.

“I’m very excited,” Barboza said. “Quarantillo is a great fighter. He’s a tough guy, he keeps moving forward. I’ll put a show, I’m very excited for this one. I know it’s going to be a big war.”

Not only is this fight about getting back on the right track for Barboza, but it’s also about being able to perform after taking time off to heal his surgically-repaired knee.

[lawrence-related id=2613361,2633163,2633099]

Barboza was set to take on Ilia Topuria in October, but was forced out due to his knee issues. He admits it was a tough decision to pull out, but he was struggling to walk, much less prepare for a fight.

“I have a really bad injury, I have three different injuries in my knee,” Barboza said. “First time in my career I needed to pull out of a fight and enjoy my family. But I’m recovered 100 percent now. Really enjoyed my family, and time to get back to work.”
