Deion Sanders earns major FCS coaching honor

Deion Sanders has won the Eddie Robinson Award as best FCS coach

Jackson State coach Deion Sanders can add another honor to his star-studded resume.

The Pro and College Football Hall of Famer was named winner of the Eddie Robinson Award, which is presented to the national coach of the year in the Division I subdivision (FCS).

Sanders led the Tigers to 11 wins in 2021 and a berth in the Celebration Bowl against South Carolina State. The game will take place on Saturday in Atlanta.

“This is a team effort, it’s a valiant effort, it takes a lot, it does not just take me. I know it takes a visionary, but people have to really support the vision. And that’s what we did,” Sanders said.

Jackson State is 11-1, including 9-0 against conference opponents.

An average of 42,293 fans attended six home games – a single-season record for an FCS school.

One of 17 finalists for the award, which is named for legendary Grambling State coach Eddie Robinson, Sanders will be honored at the FCS National Awards Banquet on Jan. 7 in Frisco, Texas.

Nick Saban named a finalist for 2021 Eddie Robinson Award

Nick Saban could win his third Eddie Robinson Award!

Nick Saban and his Alabama Crimson Tide football team accomplished a feat thought impossible by many media pundits. They beat the then-No. 1 team in the country, the Georgia Bulldogs, by a score of 41-24.

This resulted in the Crimson Tide earning the SEC Championship for the 29th time in program history and winning its tenth SEC Championship Game since the game was first played in 1992.

The confetti fell, and once again Saban was on top of the SEC.

After a 12-1 season, the Crimson Tide has reached the College Football Playoff for the seventh time in what many considered to be a down year for Alabama.

This accomplishment alone is enough to consider Saban for every coaching award this season.

The Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) announced on Tuesday afternoon that Saban would be a finalist for the 2021 Eddie Robinson Award.

A two-time winner and eight-time finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award, Saban is joined by: Blake Anderson (Utah State), Dave Aranda (Baylor), Luke Fickell (Cincinnati), Thomas Hammock (NIU), Jim Harbaugh (Michigan), Billy Napier (Louisiana), Pat Narduzzi (Pittsburgh), Kalani Sitake (BYU), Kirby Smart (Georgia), Jeff Traylor (UTSA), Mel Tucker (Michigan State) and Kyle Whittingham (Utah).
