Chargers re-signing QB Easton Stick

The Chargers are bringing back a familiar face.

The Chargers are re-signing quarterback Easton Stick, according to NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo.

Stick, a fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft, had served as the backup with zero experience as a starter until this past season when Justin Herbert was sidelined with a finger injury.

Stick went on to start the final four games and finished with 1,129 passing yards, three touchdowns and one interception while adding 144 rushing yards and a score on 27 carries.

With a new regime, it wouldn’t have been surprising if they addressed the backup quarterback spot with another veteran. But given Stick’s athleticism paired with Greg Roman’s run-heavy offense, the pairing made sense.

Additionally, the Chargers brought back Shane Day to be the team’s quarterbacks coach. He previously worked with Stick in 2021 and 2022.

Chargers’ Easton Stick blossoming into reliable backup quarterback

The Chargers should feel good with Easton Stick as their backup quarterback.

The Chargers saw something in Easton Stick to be the primary backup to Justin Herbert, leading to them re-signing him this spring. This past Saturday, in the victory over the Rams, it was all on display.

Stick got the start under center while Herbert and most of the starters were sidelined and pieced together the best performance of his career.

While known for his athletic ability, Stick’s accurate arm is what stood out in his showing. He made a handful of beautiful throws, including his lone touchdown pass to Quentin Johnston right before halftime.

Before that scoring play, Stick put together a masterful two-minute drill. He guided the offense 75 yards down the field on ten plays to give the Bolts’ their first touchdown of the game.

Along the way, Stick looked composed in the pocket, even in the face of pressure, and delivered darts. He kept the drive alive with a third-down scramble in the red zone.

“I thought his two-minute drive was phenomenal,” Kellen Moore said. “Picking and choosing when to use his legs, made good decisions with the ball, aggressive when he needs to be and then take some completions. I just loved the way he operated the whole thing.”

Stick finished 14-of-21 passing for 109 yards and a touchdown while adding two rushes for 12 yards.

After being the No. 3 quarterback on the roster the past few seasons, Stick has shown this summer that he is more than capable of being reliable in a backup role.

Chargers 2023 roster review: QB Easton Stick

Easton Stick is set to take on a bigger role behind Justin Herbert.

The 2023 season is just a month away, and with weeks of dead time during the quietest part of the NFL offseason, Chargers Wire is endeavoring to document each of Los Angeles’ players before the start of the team’s training camp.

The Chargers entered the new year with Justin Herbert as the only one in the quarterback room, but it didn’t take long for them to return a familiar face in Easton Stick to back Herbert up.

Los Angeles and Stick, the 2019 fifth-round pick, agreed to a one-year deal in March.

Even though Stick has never taken two snaps during the regular season, which came in 2020, the coaches have praised his ability to run the practice scout team for the first-team defense, and he has a close relationship with Herbert.

Stick has always been an athletic signal-caller with the legs to cause problems for opposing defenses. But he has also consistently grown as a passer, as evident from preseason showings.

Contract (2023): Base salary of $1,647,500 and a signing bonus of $152,500 while carrying a cap hit of $1,232,500 and a dead cap value of $1,152,500.

Acquired: Stick was selected by the Chargers with the 166th overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft.

Quote: Brandon Staley on how important Stick is to the team:

“I think he has a huge role on this football team. I thought he had a huge role last year,” Staley said in training camp. “Easton is really improving as a player, and I can’t say that enough. I’m really proud of his progress as a passer. I think he’s really, really improved as a passer.”

Report: Chargers re-signing QB Easton Stick

The Chargers have secured their backup quarterback.

The Chargers have secured their backup quarterback.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Monday morning that Los Angeles agreed to terms with 2019 fifth-rounder Easton Stick on a new contract to keep him in LA.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network later reported that Stick’s new deal is for one year and $1.8 million. Stick had a cap hit of $1.03 million in 2022.

While Stick has never taken an NFL regular season snap, the Chargers rave about his ability to conduct the scout team in practice and he has a close relationship with Justin Herbert. LA will obviously hope that Herbert stays healthy and prevents a backup from seeing the field in 2023 and beyond, so re-signing a locker-room presence such as Stick makes a lot of sense.

Chase Daniel is now the only member of the 2022 quarterback room that remains unsigned. He is an unrestricted free agent and a candidate to retire.
