Saints’ Michael Hodges is a key figure in Patriots DC search

The Patriots interviewed Saints linebackers coach Michael Hodges for their DC opening. Even if he doesn’t get the job, they might have a role for him:

The New Orleans Saints could lose yet another assistant to a promotion elsewhere around the league. ESPN’s Mike Reiss reports that linebackers coach Michael Hodges has interviewed for the New England Patriots defensive coordinator opening, along with several other candidates. Head coach Jerod Mayo will likely still call plays defensively, just like Dennis Allen has done, but there’s plenty of room for additions to his staff.

And Hodges is a key figure in the search. An internal option for the job, Patriots defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington, is expected to interview soon — but he’s worked with Hodges before. Here’s what Reiss had to say about the connection:

Some close to the situation say Covington, who attended Mayo’s introduction as coach Wednesday, is well-positioned to elevate to a defensive coordinator role. The interview with Hodges, who was co-defensive coordinator with Covington at Eastern Illinois in 2016, could be a tipoff that it might be headed in that direction.

That suggests there could be room for Hodges in New England even if he doesn’t get the job, possibly working with Covington again as co-defensive coordinators. That strategy didn’t work for the Saints in 2022 with Ryan Nielsen and Kris Richard sharing the title, but it’s worked for other teams, and maybe that’s a situation Mayo could navigate more effectively than Allen did. Hodges and Covington doing well together in the past lends credence to the idea.

If Hodges believes this gives him a better path to advancement and calling his own plays than his current role in New Orleans, he owes it to himself to explore it. Former coworkers like Nielsen and Aaron Glenn have found success after leaving the Saints and getting out of Allen’s shadow. We’ll see if anything comes of this interest.

Diamond Hogs add yet another transfer to the mix

Lincoln Riley (not the USC football coach) is now the newest transfer portal addition to the Arkansas baseball roster.

No, Arkansas did not just earn a commitment from the USC and former Oklahoma football coach.

But Lincoln Riley is the newest transfer portal addition to the Razorback baseball team.

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound outfielder, who most recently played at Eastern Illinois, will provide added depth at the position.

He hit .307 last year for the Panthers and started 59 games. The former all-stater in Cedar Rapids, Iowa took a visit to his home state school, but ultimately decided against the Hawkeyes and wanted to play in the SEC.

Riley had 20 games last season in which he recorded more than one hit, with two of those coming against both Arkansas and Vanderbilt, respectfully.

Oregon Ducks Regional Preview: Eastern Illinois Panthers

Eastern Illinois was able to upset three higher seeded teams to win the OVC tournament and make its way into the Nashville Regional.

Playing must-win games might become a bit old for the Eastern Illinois Panthers baseball team.

After finishing fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference, EIU had to win three straight games, including a 6-5 win over regular-season champion Morehead State to win the conference tourney and earn a bid into the NCAA tournament.

The Panthers reward for the upset? A date with the No. 6 national seed Vanderbilt Commodores in Nashville. But considering their season was on the brink, Eastern Illinois would have welcomed playing the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field if it meant continuing the season.

EIU enters the NCAA Tournament with a 38-19 overall record and the 38 wins ranking as the most in program history. EIU’s previous two trips to the NCAA Tournament were in 1999 at the Waco Regional (hosted by Baylor) and 2008 at the Lincoln Regional (hosted by Nebraska). The Panthers are 1-4 all-time in the tourney.

Eastern Illinois placed three players on the Ohio Valley Conference first team this year with utility player Ryan Ignoffo (.336, 15 homers, 59 runs batted in), starting pitcher Ky Hampton (7-2, 4.33 earned run average) and closer Zane Robbins (seven saves, 1.38 ERA).

Ignoffo also pitches and was named as one of the top 5 two-way players in the country with his 4.71 ERA and four saves.

The Panthers and Commodores play Friday at 4 pm PST and will be live on the SEC Network.

NCAA goes for history by sending Oregon to the Nashville Regional

For the second time in nearly a decade, Oregon baseball will make its way to Nashville to play in NCAA tournament regional action.

We’ve been here before, correct?

The NCAA baseball tournament committee is sending Oregon to the Nashville Regional where the 2-seeded Ducks will open up with 3-seed Xavier.

The Ducks have been to Nashville before. It was the 2014 season when Oregon was bounced out by the host Commodores.

Way back in February, it was the Ducks and Musketeers meeting in the opening series of the season at PK Park where the Ducks swept the four-game series.

Host Vanderbilt and Eastern Illinois make up the rest of the regional, which begins Friday on ESPN+.

Vandy is the National 6-seed with a record of 41-18 and won the SEC tournament. Eastern Illinois comes into the regional 38-19 and they also won their conference tournament.

Xavier rebounded nicely after that early trip to Eugene and finished 37-23 on the season.

Half of the regional sites belong to SEC schools with 8-seeded Stanford being the only West Coast team to host. Oregon State was sent to the Baton Rouge Regional (LSU) and will play Sam Houston State.

Washington was sent to the Stillwater Regional (Oklahoma State) and will open the tourney with Dallas Baptist.

Should Oregon and Washington win their regional, the Ducks and Huskies would meet in a Super Regional with a trip to Omaha on the line.

Arizona was on the bubble and after a good May that included making the Pac-12 tournament final before losing to the Ducks, was rewarded with a Fayetteville Regional (Arkansas) appearance. The Wildcats will face TCU.

Saints hire Eastern Illinois DC Adam Gristick as a defensive assistant

The Saints hired former Eastern Illinois defensive coordinator Adam Gristick as an assistant. EIU’s NFL pipeline includes Sean Payton, Tony Romo, and Jimmy Garoppolo:

Dennis Allen isn’t quite finished building his New Orleans Saints coaching staff. The Saints have hired former Eastern Illinois defensive coordinator Adam Gristick as a defensive assistant, per ESPN’s Katherine Terrell — Gristick was one of two coaches retained last year by new EIU head coach Chris Wilkerson, having been promoted to the coordinator role after coaching linebackers for four years. Before taking this job at his alma mater, Gristick started his coaching career at Missouri State and Syracuse.

So he’s an assistant on the rise. EIU has been a surprising NFL pipeline over the years; its alumni include Sean Payton, Tony Romo, and Jimmy Garoppolo. Maybe Gristick can make a positive impact on the Saints. New Orleans has a widely-respected linebackers coach in Michael Hodges, but he’s a candidate to leave in a few years for a coordinator job of his own (much like Aaron Glenn and Ryan Nielsen before him). It makes sense to bring in Gristick as a candidate to replace him if Hodges isn’t long for New Orleans.

Arkansas host Eastern Illinois for a weekend series at Baum Walker Stadium

Next for the Diamond Hogs are Ohio Valley Conference representers, Eastern Illinois.

Next for the Diamond Hogs are Ohio Valley Conference representers, Eastern Illinois.

The Diamond Hogs lead the all-time series 2-32. They beat EIU in the first meeting back in 1984. The Panthers got their first win over the Hogs in 1988 but wouldn’t win another game until 2016.

E. Wayne said this is a series the Razorbacks should sweep, but that was before he watched the four-game roller coaster the Hogs were on. After allowing 18 runs, scoring 18 runs, and struggling in the home opener, Eastern Illinois isn’t just an easy opponent.

EIU started their season off with a 3-0 series sweep of Florida A&M in Tallahassee. It marked the first time since 1988 that the Panthers have swept a team during the opening weekend of the NCAA season.

A three-game sweep for the Diamond Hogs would better indicate how the team will look in the ladder months. This is a chance for the team to find momentum. Dominate performances are a must;

Hagen Smith is back on the mound for the first time since he opened the season against Texas. Smith threw five scoreless innings and eight strikeouts but did not end up with the victory. The Panthers are only batting .262 and have an on-base percentage of .396. Smith could find a rhythm against this lineup.

Northern Illinois vs Eastern Illinois Game Preview

Why Eastern Illinois Will Win

The Panther defense returns enough talent to be much, much better.

Depending on the alignment, 11 starters should return on a D that was terrific at coming up with tackles for loss, was second in the Ohio Valley Conference in total defense, and did a nice job of taking the ball away.

LB Colin Bohanek is a playmaker, the all-star combination of Tim Varga and Jordan Miles will make plenty of things happen up front, and …

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

Eastern Illinois is all but starting over in several ways under new head coach Chris Wilkerson.

The offense that struggled throughout the 1-10 season only returns four starters, it has to find a way to keep the turnovers to a minimum and the chains moving, and that defense that has a ton of experience doesn’t have the bulk to hold up against the Northern Illinois ground game.

The Huskies have one of the best offensive fronts in the MAC, veteran QB Rocky Lombardi and the passing game should have time to work, and the defense that still needs time and seasoning after a rough two years should be able to use this as a true tune-up.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

Northern Illinois will come up with enough offensive balance throughout to steadily keep pulling away.

Eastern Illinois has to win the turnover margin by at last three, it needs to find something steady on offense that works, and … that’s not happening.

This will be the game that gives NIU fans hope that the youth movement of last year on defense will payoff big.
