Auburn commits announce early signing period plans

Five Auburn commits have announced their plans for the early signing period.

The early signing period is among the most important dates in college football, and it is just days away. It opens Wednesday, Dec. 21 and numerous college football recruits will sign with their future team. Several Auburn commits plan to do just that.

Auburn’s 2023 recruiting class has 13 commits and ranks 42nd in the country according to the 247Sports team rankings. Since arriving, [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] has put an emphasis on recruiting the trenches and it has paid off, the Tigers have four commits along the offensive line and three along the defensive line.

As of today, five of Auburn’s commits have announced their plans for the early signing period. Here is a look at when they will sign with the Tigers on Wednesday.

Strengths and a weakness of Auburn’s early signing class

Auburn’s class has some strengths but there are areas to improve.

The early signing period has come and gone and we can now take a look at Auburn’s class.

The class took until the week of the early signing period to come into shape but Auburn fans appear to feel much more confident in their team moving forward thanks to this class.

Auburn has now signed 18 of their 19 commits and has addressed several positions of need. With their strong week, Auburn now has the 13th ranked class in the country and sixth in the SEC. Here is a look at some of the strengths of the class as well as one weakness.

Four-star quarterback Holden Geriner signs with Auburn

The QB and landed.

Holden Geriner has had a week for the ages.

On Friday he won the state championship and nearly threw for 400 yards, on Wednesday he signed with Auburn

Geriner has been committed to Auburn since February and is a four-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Geriner joins a quarterback room that has Bo Nix, T.J. Finley and Dematrius Davis.

As a senior, he completed 233-of-343 (67.9%) passes for 3,377 yards, 36 touchdowns and only three interceptions, here are his highlights

Four-star running back Damari Alston signs with Auburn

First one!

Damari Alston is officially an Auburn Tiger.

Alston has been vocal about his love of Auburn and has done tons of work to try and recruit more players to join him in heading to The Plains.

Alston is a four-star running back from Atlanta, Georgia, and is the No. 29 running back in the 247Sports Composite ranking.

Auburn has two stars at running back in Tank Bigbsy and Jarquez Hunter but lacks depth and Alston will have a chance to play as a freshman.

Alston rushed for 1,639 yards and 27 touchdowns on 200 carries (8.2 average) as a senior, you can watch his highlights here.

Auburn makes top 5 for 3-star DL Enyce Sledge

ANother defensive lineman would be a nice add.

Auburn is hoping to use a strong early signing day to bolster the 2022 recruiting class.

Enyce Sledge, a three-star defensive lineman from Monroe, Louisiana, announced his top five schools ahead of early signing day on Dec. 15 and the Tigers are firmly in the mix. Sledge reportedly plans to sign on Dec. 15 but is not an early enrollee.

They will be battling Baylor, Indiana, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech for the 6-foot-3.5 and 315-pound defensive tackle.

Sledge, a former Baylor commit, is scheduled to officially visit Auburn on Dec. 10. He is listed as the No. 136 defensive lineman in the country in the 247Sports Composite ranking.

Auburn, who has a need at defensive tackle, only has one currently committed in their 2022 recruiting class, four-star Caden Story — the Tigers’ highest-rated commit. Auburn’s class currently ranks 34th in the country and 13th in the SEC.

Looking at the 2021 Auburn recruiting class ahead of the Early Signing Period

Auburn’s 2021 class is small so far but the Tigers have the chance to sign some big talent in the Early Signing Period.

With the Dec. 16 early signing period just more than a week away it is time to take a closer look at the 2021 recruiting class and see what could be in store for the Tigers.

The Tigers currently have the No. 42 recruiting class in the country according to the 247Sports Composite. The class ranks 11th in the SEC and is currently behind Kentucky and just ahead of Vanderbilt.

The class plummeted nearly 20 spots after the decommitment of running back Amari Goodwin.

Under Gus Malzahn Auburn has never finished below 12th nationally and all but twice (2018 and 2019) have finished outside the top 10.

While it would seem that the Tigers would be hard pressed to finish inside the top 10, the class still has several elite recruits.

Here is a look at everything you need to know about the 2021 Auburn recruiting class

Total commits: 12

One of the biggest factors in the Tigers low ranking is the size of their class, as Auburn’s 12 commits are the second fewest in the SEC. Alabama, Georgia and LSU – the top 3 classes in the SEC – have at least 20 commits.

Last commitment: 3-star receiver Hal Presley on Nov. 11.

Spots to fill: This number is hard to know. With 2020 not counting against a player’s eligibility and it being unknown how that will affect the amount of scholarship players a program can have on the roster. The NCAA also created a one-time transfer exception for the 2020–21 legislative cycle, which will likely make the transfer market more active.

Class Ranking: 42nd nationally, 11th in SEC

The Tigers lead just Vanderbilt, Ole Miss and South Carolina in the SEC and trail Rutgers, Georgia Tech, Virginia and Iowa in overall ranking.

AVERAGE RATING PER COMMIT: 89.23

The rating is just below the 90.00 threshold to be considered a 4-star and ranks 15th nationally.

Decommits:

  • 4-star running back Amari Goodwin, uncommitted
  • 4-star quarterback Aaron McLaughlin, NC State
  • 4-star offensive tackle Caleb Johnson, Notre Dame
  • 3-star offensive tackle J’Marion Gooch, Tennessee
