Chiefs P Dustin Colquitt providing unique advantage in preparation for Browns

Colquitt will make a huge difference in the Chiefs’ special teams preparation this week.

The Kansas City Chiefs pay a lot of attention to detail when they make roster decisions.

The Chiefs have a great rookie punter in Tommy Townsend, but this week, he won’t be doing all of the punting drills during special teams periods in practice. Instead, the team will rely on former Chiefs starter of 15 years, Dustin Colquitt, who was recently re-signed on the Kansas City practice squad.

Why will Colquitt be taking the majority of the reps over Townsend if he’s not scheduled to play, though? This week the Chiefs will be facing Browns punter Jamie Gillan, who happens to be a left-footed punter. Do you know who else is a lefty punter? Dustin Colquitt.

“It’s really fortunate to be able to get Dustin back,” Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub said. “He’s a Chief, he’s always been a Kansas City Chief and he always will be. It’s good to have him back in the locker room with the guys. He’s just a fun guy to be around and he’s going to help Tommy (Townsend) down the stretch here and he’s helping our football team because of the three teams that are left in the AFC, there are two left-footed punters that are left and he’s giving us those looks during practice, catch a left ball rotation for our returners, you know a live ball which is better than catching off a jugs and he’s been a real asset having him on the practice squad right now.”

Colquitt is giving Mecole Hardman, Tyreek Hill, Demarcus Robinson and other return specialists a specific rotation on the ball that they wouldn’t be getting from Townsend in practice. It’s those small details that can be the difference between a muffed punt, a fair catch and a punt return during the course of a game. Catching some balls with that type of rotation will be a vital piece of preparation for each of those players.

Including Gillan, there are two left-footed punters that remain in the playoffs. Bills punter Corey Bojorquez is also a lefty and if both Kansas City and Buffalo advance and meet in the AFC Championship Game, Colquitt’s leg will come into play again as the special teams unit prepares for that challenge.

Chiefs to sign P Dustin Colquitt to practice squad

A reunion that we can all get behind as the playoffs commence.

The Kansas City Chiefs are reuniting with a familiar face ahead of the playoffs.

According to numerous reports, Kansas City intends to sign their former punter, Dustin Colquitt, to the practice squad. The Chiefs released Colquitt following the 2019 NFL season after 15 years of serving as the starting punter in Kansas City. Colquitt has since bounced around a bit, in hopes of extending his playing career, spending time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and most recently the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Colquitt finally won a championship with the team in Super Bowl LIV and now he’s back for another playoff run. The Chiefs have Tommy Townsend as their starting punter, of course. He’s been incredible all season, but Townsend’s brother Johnny was recently signed from the practice squad by the Baltimore Ravens.

Kansas City seems to be interested in the luxury of having an extra specialist on the practice squad given the current COVID-19 situation across the league. Adding Colquitt to the roster protects them if one of their two specialists were exposed to the virus and placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. It also adds a well-liked player back to the locker room ahead of a playoff run, which should provide a big morale boost to all the players.

The Chiefs no longer have any vacant spots on the practice squad after adding Colquitt and TE Ricky Seals-Jones yesterday. It looks like this will be the group that they take into the playoffs.

Report: Chiefs sign punter Dustin Colquitt to practice squad

The Chiefs are signing veteran punter Dustin Colquitt to their practice squad

One can never be too sure when it comes to the postseason.

The Kansas City Chiefs are taking all sorts of precautions. Case in point, they are signing former long-term punter Dustin Colquitt to their practice squad, per ESPN’s Field Yates.

The Chiefs selected Colquitt in the third round (99th pick overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft. He spent his career with them through 2019.

He played in 238 games, punting 1,124 times for an average of 44.8 yards per kick. He was a two-time Pro Bowler.

He holds the record for most games played in franchise history (238). Colquitt was part of the Chiefs Super Bowl LIV victory last season and holds the club’s record for most postseason game appearances (12). Last season he became the second player in team history to accrue 15 seasons with the club (Jerrel Wilson, 15).

He was cut in April and replaced by Tommy Townsend in 2020.

“Dustin is one of the greatest Chiefs of all-time and I’m grateful I had the opportunity to coach him these past seven years,” Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid said at the time. “The longevity of his career here in Kansas City shows you just how consistently he has performed at a high level. Beyond his impact on the field, he was a great teammate and leader. I will always be a huge Dustin Colquitt fan.”

Colquitt kicked for the Steelers and Jaguars in  2020, playing six games.

Tennessee Titans hold tryouts with 4 punters ahead of Week 9

A Tennessee native is among the four punters the Titans are trying out.

With the status of punter Brett Kern up in the air for Week 9, the Tennessee Titans are taking a look at four punters via tryouts.

Per the league’s transactions wire, the Titans are worked out punters Ryan Allen, Dustin Colquitt, Lachlan Edwards and Trevor Daniel.

This would seem to indicate that the Titans are expecting Kern to miss time with a hand injury he suffered following a botched snap on an extra point attempt during the Week 8 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

On Monday, Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky reported that Kern “will miss time” with his injury, although it isn’t clear exactly how much.

Head coach Mike Vrabel told the media that Kern would undergo tests on Monday to determine the extent of his injury. We haven’t gotten any new information since he made that statement.

The Titans do have an in-house option in rookie kicker Tucker McCann, who handled kicking and punting duties in his final season at Missouri, but he has zero NFL experience.

All four of the aforementioned punters have NFL experience, with Colquitt, who is a native of Tennessee and attended both high school and college (University of Tennessee) in the state, leading the way with 16 seasons.

The veteran is a two-time Pro Bowler (2012 and 2016) and most recently played with the Pittsburgh Steelers this season before getting cut last month. He spent his first 15 seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Edwards and Allen have four and seven years of experience, respectively, and Daniel, who is also a Tennessee native and played his high school and college ball in the state, has just 18 career games under his belt. Neither of these three players have taken a snap in 2020, though.

VFL Dustin Colquitt released by Steelers

Dustin Colquitt gets cut by Pittsburgh Steelers.

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have parted ways with punter Dustin Colquitt.

Colquitt, a former All-America standout at the University of Tennessee, was released by the Steelers on Saturday before Pittsburgh outlasted the Tennessee Titans, 27-24, in Nashville the following day.

Prior to signing with the Steelers, Colquitt punted for the Kansas City Chiefs between 2005-19. He won a Super Bowl with Kansas City following last season.

At the time of his departure from the Chiefs, he was their longest tenured player.

At Tennessee, Colquitt was a two-time All-Southeastern Conference player in 2003 and 2004.

His father, Craig, also played at UT and with the Steelers. He was on multiple Super Bowl championship teams in Pittsburgh.

His brother, Britton, is playing for the Minnesota Vikings. He also punted at UT and won the Super Bowl with Denver alongside fellow VFL Peyton Manning.

Craig’s nephew, Jimmy, was also a star punter on Rocky Top.

Three former Vols will not play Sunday

Story detailing the postponement of Titans game against the Steelers. Three former Vols are on Pittsburgh’s roster.

NASHVILLE — The National Football League officially made its first postponement due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The league announced Thursday that it would postpone the game between Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee until later this season, due to a coronavirus outbreak in the Titans’ organization.

Several Tennessee players and team personnel have tested positive for the virus since the Titans played Minnesota last week.

A postponement of the game between two undefeated teams means that a trio of former Vols will not be in action Sunday.

Backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs, defensive back Cameron Sutton and punter Dustin Colquitt all play for the Steelers.

VFL Dustin Colquitt signs with Steelers

Dustin Colquitt signs with Pittsburgh Steelers

PITTSBURGH — Former Kansas City Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt has found a new home.

Colquitt, a graduate of Bearden High School and former All-American at the University of Tennessee, signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday.

He was cut by the Chiefs in April as the team was looking to clear salary cap space.

Colquitt was the longest tenured active player in Kansas City at the time of his release. He and the Chiefs won the Super Bowl in February when they notched a 31-20 comeback victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

While he has spent his entire professional career in Kansas City, the Colquitt name is well-known in Western Pennsylvania.

Colquitt’s father, Craig, was a punter in Pittsburgh when the Steelers were on their dynasty run in the 1970s.

He won two Super Bowls with the team.

Craig’s other son, Britton, now with the Minnesota Vikings, punted for the Volunteers and won a Super Bowl alongside Peyton Manning with the Denver Broncos.

Former Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt to sign one-year contract with Steelers

Colquitt will continue his playing career in AFC North.

A former member of the Kansas City Chiefs is joining a new team.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that ex-Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt will be signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers on a one-year contract. Colquitt’s agent later confirmed the news on Twitter.

Colquitt, who worked out for the Steelers over the weekend, was released by Kansas City this offseason after serving as the Chiefs’ punter for 15 seasons. Signing in Pittsburgh is significant for Colquitt because his father, Craig Colquitt, also played punter for the Steelers from 1978 through 1984. The elder Colquitt won two world championships in Super Bowl XIII and Super Bowl XIV.

After winning a Super Bowl ring with the Chiefs during the 2019-20 season, many thought that Colquitt might just ride off into the sunset after his release. However, Colquitt always intended to continue playing. He’s still building on a legacy that could one day find him remembered as one of the greatest punters in the history of the NFL.

Colquitt is currently No. 8 in NFL history with 50,393 punting yards in his career. He needs just over 2,000 yards to jump Donnie Jones for No. 6 all-time. If he plays in the NFL at a high level for two more seasons, he could easily find himself in the top 5 all-time punters.

It’ll be strange watching Colquitt play in another jersey for those who’ve known him as a Chief the last 15 years. While Kansas City and Pittsburgh aren’t scheduled to play this season, there’s always a chance the two teams meet in the postseason.

Steelers signing P Dustin Colquitt to 1-year contract

The Steelers have themselves a new punter.

[jwplayer Puvewi4I-ThvAeFxT]

It seems it’s over for Pittsburgh Steelers punter Jordan Berry. ESPN NFL reporter is reporting that former Kansas City Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt has passed his physical and is signing a one-year contract with the Steelers.

Colquitt has been the punter for the Chiefs for the last 15 seasons and has been a steady and consistent performer. He joins the team his dad Dustin player with for eight seasons and won two Super Bowls.

The corresponding move to get Colquitt onto the 53-man roster will be to release Berry. Berry has been completely inconsistent during his career but was able to hold onto his spot until now. The Steelers were so concerned they even kept a punter on their practice squad, one of only three teams to do this.

Report: Steelers expected to make a change at punter

According to a report, the Steelers are going to sign Dustin Colquitt.

[jwplayer omiGPolx-ThvAeFxT]

Life comes at you fast. Ok, so maybe this doesn’t apply to Pittsburgh Steelers punter Jordan Berry. But considering Berry wasn’t released on Saturday when final cuts were announced, this one had to come as something of a shock.

We already knew the Steelers were bringing in Dustin Colquitt for a tryout. But according to NFL reporter Tom Pelissero, if Colquitt passes a physical and the COVID-19 protocols, the Steelers are going to sign him.

This would bring an end to Berry’s time in Pittsburgh that started back in 2015. More details will come out in time and this could simply be a case of Berry dealing with some sort of injury but either way the Steelers look to be on the verge of having themselves a new punter for the 2020 season.
