Duke football gave us an awesome recreation of classic ‘Mean Joe’ Coca-Cola commercial

Jacob Monk gives us his best “Mean Joe” Greene impersonation.

You remember that Coca-Cola commercial with Pittsburgh Steelers legend “Mean” Joe Greene, don’t you? Or maybe your parents remember it. Or maybe your grandparents remember it – in the way Captain America understands references to flying monkeys.

Anyways, it’s a classic. The ad made its television debut on Oct. 1, 1979, and shows the hobbled Hall of Fame defensive tackle walking down a tunnel after a game. He’s approached by a young pint-sized fan, who tells Greene he’s the “best-ever” and offers up a Coke to soothe his postgame woes. Greene chugs the soda – somehow without burping – while the “Coke and a Smile” jingle plays, and then he tosses the kid his jersey.

It’s an understatement to call the commercial iconic. It aired again during Super Bowl XIV – where Greene’s Steelers won their fourth championship – and has been parodied by Sesame Street, the Simpsons and Family Guy. Coca-Cola even recreated it with another Pittsburgh defensive great, Troy Polamalu, in 2009.

And now, 43 years after the original aired, Duke football is getting in on the fun.

The Blue Devils dropped this video Thursday night, ahead of their game on Saturday at Georgia Tech in Atlanta – the birthplace of Coca-Cola.

A young Duke fan and senior offensive lineman Jacob Monk stuck to the script and gave us a pretty perfect recreation, but opted for a Coke Zero instead of the classic Coca-Cola.

If you look closely, the video is also a uniform reveal. Duke will wear black pants, white jerseys and matte black helmets on Saturday against the Yellow Jackets.

The Blue Devils are off to a hot start this season under first-year head coach Mike Elko – who was 2-years-old when the original “Mean Joe” ad aired. The former Texas A&M defensive coordinator has Duke sitting atop the chaotic Coastal Division in the ACC with a 4-1 record, with the Blue Devils’ only loss coming at Kansas.

Duke is a 3.5-point road favorite on Saturday at Georgia Tech, which just won at Pitt after firing head coach Geoff Collins. The point total is set at 54.5.

Odds to win the ACC: Clemson remains the favorite after a double-overtime win over Wake Forest

Swinney and the Tigers remain favorites to win the ACC.

It was a massive weekend for Dabo Swinney and Clemson as they took home a huge 51-45 double overtime win on the road against Dave Clawson’s Wake Forest.

An important win for the team as all are, the Tigers overcame some defensive woes with a stellar performance from starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei and the Clemson offense. It was arguably Uiagalelei’s best performance since his freshman season.

With Wake Forest in the rearview mirror, the Tigers’ next game is another big one as they host NC State for ESPN’s College GameDay next Saturday. It is a matchup that will significantly affect each team’s odds of winning the ACC, just as Wake Forest was.

So, what are the current odds for each team in the ACC to win the conference?

COLLEGE FOOTBALL VIBE CHECK: GameDay’s fumble vs. Chase Brice’s southern hospitality

Week 3 saw blowouts and an epic Hail Mary. What will Week 4 hold?

Welcome back to VIBE CHECK, the post where we monitor and assess the weekly pulse of college football. Each week, we’ll grade a handful of teams based on their on-field performance, off-field shenanigans (good and bad!), message board chatter, and more. This is very (read: not at all) scientific and should be taken very (read: not at all) seriously.

Week 3 is in the rearview mirror, and there were seemingly two options for games: utter blowout or nail-biting squeaker. There were some outrageous scores — Michigan blanked UConn 59-0 — and a walk-off Hail Mary.

Let’s check in with this week’s vibes, shall we?

Top-5 most watchable college football games of Week 4

Kansas vs. Duke? Kansas vs. Duke!!

Last week was the week that inevitably arrives every September in college football. The weekend when pretenders are exposed, weak links are identified and preseason hype evaporates into thin air. Welcome to Week 4, a darker and bleaker place, sure, but a real one.

The big, flashy, made-for-TV non-conference matchups are largely over, and now we get into the nitty-gritty of the conference slate. This week’s most watchable games include a traditional rivalry, a clash of two surprising Cinderella stories and a few conference matchups between teams desperately trying to go from wishing and hoping to contending.

ACC power rankings heading into Week 4

After an exciting Week 3, here’s our ACC power rankings heading into Week 4.

Another week of the 2022 college football season is behind us as each team around the ACC prepares for their upcoming Week 4 matchups.

Florida State and Louisville battled it out in a close in-conference game, while the rest of the ACC had varying performances in their non-conference matchups. Teams such as Duke and Syracuse keep surprising people week in and week out, while Miami failed to live up to their previous No.13 ranking with a loss to Texas A&M.

It was an active week for the ACC, with its strong performances and its weaker ones.

A letter grade for every ACC team’s Week 2 performance

Week 2 of the 2022 college football season is behind us, with Clemson defeating Furman 35-12 in a home matchup at Death Valley.

The Tigers started the game cooking on offense, but the group slowed down in the second half as the defense seemingly did the opposite, beginning the game on the shakier side before recovering in the second half.

All but one ACC team saw action this week with Florida State having a bye, and it was yet another eventful week out of the conference. Teams had their ups and downs along with their wins and losses.

How did the ACC fair? Which teams performed while others struggled?

Week one of college football is in the books with Clemson’s 41-10 victory over Georgia Tech at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta Monday night.

It was a competitive game early until Clemson found their groove in the second half, and the offense got things going. Georgia Tech looked solid with what they had, giving the Tigers some trouble early with talented quarterback Jeff Sims making plays.

While Clemson and Georgia Tech may have been the last teams we saw on week one, the entire ACC was active this week, with some playing non-conference matchups and others playing in-conference.
