The Atlanta Falcons released outside linebacker Duke Ejiofor from the non-football injury list on Wednesday.

Ejiofor, a former sixth-round pick out of Wake Forest back in 2018, had his career derailed by two devastating injuries — a torn Achilles in 2019 and a torn ACL in 2020.

The Falcons originally signed Ejiofor to a reserve/future contract back in January. For his career, the former Houston Texans linebacker has accumulated nine tackles and one sack.

Atlanta also recently lost wide receiver Calvin Ridley for a minimum of one season after the NFL determined he was illegally betting on games. The team can’t start to add talent in free agency when the new league kicks off on March 16.

Texans cut OLB Duke Ejiofor following failed physical

The Houston Texans have cut former Alief Taylor standout Duke Ejiofor.

The Houston Texans released outside linebacker Duke Ejiofor on Wednesday.

The former Alief Taylor product played 12 games for the Texans in his rookie season after Houston selected him in the sixth round from Wake Forest in 2018. Ejiofor provided the Texans with nine combined tackles, a tackle for loss, two quarterback hits, 1.0 sack, and two pass breakups.

According to Aaron Wilson of Sports Talk 790, the Texans released Ejiofor because of a failed physical.

In the 2019 offseason, just before the start of organized team activities, Ejiofor tore his Achilles and was out for the year.

“It’s been unlucky,” then-coach Bill O’Brien said on May 19, 2019. “Duke’s a great guy and he just has had some bad luck. He’ll be back, though. He’ll be back at some point and he’ll have a chance to be a good pro football player. He’s a good guy, he can do a lot of different things, he’s a versatile player. It’s just one of those things. It’s tough. It was a fluky thing. It’s just bad luck really, to be honest with you.”

On Aug. 21, 2020, Ejiofor was placed on injured reserve once more after he tore his ACL and was out for a second straight season.

The Houston Texans will be without a young edge defender as Duke Ejiofor tore his ACL at the end of practice Friday.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the former 2018 sixth-round pick from Wake Forest injured his knee after the Texans’ first padded practice of training camp. Ejiofor was recovering from a ruptured Achilles that he sustained during May of 2019.

“It’s been unlucky,” coach Bill O’Brien of Ejiofor’s Achilles tear last season. “Duke’s a great guy and he just has had some bad luck. He’ll be back, though. He’ll be back at some point and he’ll have a chance to be a good pro football player.”

The rehab resets for the former Alief Taylor product, who produced 9.0 tackles, 1.0 sack, a tackle for loss, two pass breakups, and a fumble recovery in his 12 games with Houston as a rookie.

Houston will rely on rookie third-round outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard, third-year linebacker Jacob Martin, and third-year linebacker Peter Kalambayi for edge rusher depth.

7 Texans who need a great training camp

There are bubble players on every roster, and here are seven players who need to have strong training camps for the Houston Texans.

The Houston Texans will have an extended training camp throughout the month of August. Bubble players won’t have the benefit of preseason games to make their cases. Instead, they will need strong showings in practice to prove their worth to coach and general manager Bill O’Brien.

The Texans aren’t trading Kenny Stills; he isn’t the odd man out with Brandin Cooks and Randall Cobb coming to town. Coutee is the receiver whose job is in jeopardy.

The former 2018 fifth-round pick had a promising rookie season, but injuries and landing in Bill O’Brien’s doghouse last year derailed his second year. There wouldn’t be new receivers in Houston right now if O’Brien thought Coutee was dependable.

The Texans may have addressed their current pass rush need in the 2018 NFL Draft

The Houston Texans must address their pass rush problems heading into 2020, but the club may have already done so by drafting Duke Ejiofor in 2018.

The 2020 Houston Texans have to fix their pass rush deficiencies. 31-year-old defensive end J.J. Watt and outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus, who will be 31 come Week 1, need reinforcements.

While the club expects defensive end Charles Omenihu to take a leap in his second year, the club has a promising edge defender returning in outside linebacker Duke Ejiofor.

The 2018 sixth-round pick from Wake Forest via nearby Alief Taylor High School produced 1.0 sack, a tackle for loss, a fumble recovery, and two pass breakups in his 12-game rookie season.

On Oct. 7, 2018, when the Texans hosted the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football, then-general manager Brian Gaine, who joined sideline reporter John Harris on the Texans Radio Network prior to kickoff, mentioned the rookie as part of the team’s pass rush.

“To have [Jadeveon Clowney] out there with Whitney and J.J. all at the same time, we’re excited about the prospects of Duke Ejiofor as well,” said Gaine. “We feel like we got a pretty deep arsenal in terms of rushers.”

Ejiofor was set to take the same leap Omenihu could take in his second year, but the 6-4, 255-pound outside linebacker tore his Achilles tendon in the offseason.

“It’s been unlucky,” coach Bill O’Brien said on May 10, 2019. “Duke’s a great guy and he just has had some bad luck. He’ll be back, though. He’ll be back at some point and he’ll have a chance to be a good pro football player.”

What the Texans like about Ejiofor is his versatility. The former Demon Deacon has also made an impression on the coaching staff that he is a smart, hard worker with versatility.

In the 2018 preseason, Ejiofor sustained a hamstring injury that landed him as questionable on the injury report for Week 1 at the New England Patriots. Ultimately, Ejiofor was declared inactive, and he made it back for Week 2 at the Tennessee Titans, where he recorded 1.0 sack in his first career game.

If Ejiofor can return to form from his Achilles injury, then the Texans should have adequate and young enough pass rushers to complement Watt and Mercilus.
