  1. The Panthers ended a nine-day hiatus by netting a season-high 96 points Saturday in a 96- 76 home win over Syracuse. Pitt outscored SU by a combined 22 points on 3-pointers and free throws. The Panthers had averaged just 63.5 points per game over their previous four games.
  2. Pittsburgh got 24 points and 16 rebounds from 6-foot-6 G

    Justin Champagnie in its Saturday win over the Orange.

    Champagnie has tallied 20-plus in four of his last five games and is averaging 18.7 PPG overall.

  3. Pitt’s last win in this series came Feb. 28, 2016. Winning by an average margin of 19 points, Duke has won five straight since then. Last season, the Devils beat the Panthers 79-67 in Durham Jan. 28.

Money line (ML)

Champagnie is a monster on the offensive glass (21 offensive rebounds in his last four games), and he creates matchup problems for the Blue Devils.

A youthful Duke squad hasn’t really beaten anyone of note, and there isn’t much of a comparison on its schedule for the type of ball Pitt plays.

BACK THE PANTHERS +145 in a play with a ton of value.

Against the spread (ATS)

A slightly lesser play here on the value meter is PITTSBURGH +3.5 (-110). Consider light ATS action as a complement to a larger play on the ML.

Over/Under (O/U)

The game figures to have more pace than the average NCAA-I affair. The 143-and-a-hook looks to be an accurate assessment on the total: PASS.

Wake Forest at Duke: Three things to know

  1. The Deacons and Devils are thus far two of the more COVID-impacted programs in big-time college hoops. Wake Forest and Duke head into Saturday’s tilt at Cameron Indoor Stadium having played a combined 11 games in a season that started some six weeks ago. Wake Forest didn’t play between Nov. 27-Dec. 31; Duke has played just one game since Dec. 16.
  2. Duke’s one recent game was an uneven effort in a shaky near-loss to Boston College on Wednesday. The Blue Devils never led by more than four points and trailed for much of a contest they eventually won, 83-82.  In that win, a bright spot for Duke was the play of F Wendell Moore, Jr., who tied a career-high with 25 points. The mark he tied came against these Demon Deacons — Moore tallied 25 at Wake Forest on Feb. 25.
  3. In its one-point home win against BC, Duke was undone by the Eagles going 9-of-16 from distance. Albeit in a spread out, start-and-stop schedule, the Devils have struggled with their perimeter defense in several games thus far. Three-hundred-and-five teams have held opponents to a lower 3-point mark than Duke’s 38.4% figure.

PASS on a juice-filled money line, but consider Wake Forest at any figure approaching +700. The Deacons are a worthy play to stay within 10 in this game. At +700 or so, the price is right on essentially wagering the Over in chaos.

Against the spread (ATS)

Wake Forest is 5-1 ATS in its last six games against teams playing .600 basketball or better. Duke is 0-5 ATS in its last five home games.

In a contest that figures to have some tempo, Wake Forest should be able to capitalize with some transition success against a loose-handled Devils squad, one that has underwhelmed on defense.

TAKE the DEMON DEACONS +13.5 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

Make a play on a Wake bounce from a plodding contest at Virginia which followed an iffy shooting night at Georgia Tech. In a buy-low situation, with two unproven defenses, in what figures as an up-tempo back-and-forth with a visiting team that will frequently launch from distance … BACK THE OVER 143.5 (-115).

  1. Duke’s last outing was an 83-68 home loss to then-No. 6 Illinois as a 3-point favorite Dec. 8. The Blue Devils fell behind 14-2, trailed 43-29 at the break and never came within single digits the rest of the way. Duke’s other loss was to then-No. 8 Michigan State by a 75-69 count Dec. 1, while its two wins are against cupcakes in Coppin State and Bellarmine. Duke standout freshman F Jalen Johnson (11.5 points per game, 8.3 rebounds per game) will miss Wednesday’s game as he is out indefinitely due to a foot injury. Sophomore F Matthew Hurt leads the Blue Devils with 19.0 PPG and also averages 8.3 RPG.
  2. Notre Dame, which was a 7-point underdog, is coming off a 64-63 road victory at Kentucky Saturday. The Irish jumped out to a 33-9 lead and held a 48-26 halftime advantage but had to hold off a late run by the Wildcats, who missed a jumper at the buzzer that would have won the game. Junior G Prentiss Hubb (18 points vs. UK) leads the Irish with 21.3 PPG. and junior F Nate Laszewski (21 points vs. UK) averages 16.5 PPG and 9.5 RPG.
  3. Duke has won the last six vs. Notre Dame, including a 94-60 rout Feb. 20 in their most recent tilt. The Blue Devils covered the spread in all six victories, too.

Back NOTRE DAME (+150) with a half-unit play. Duke hasn’t shown anything to earn the right to be the favorite. The sportsbooks are counting on “Joe Public” to bet the Blue Devils based on the program’s history, including its 6-0 record in recent matchups vs. Notre Dame.

Against the spread (ATS)

NOTRE DAME +4.5 (-120) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1.5 times your usual wager. I hope I’m not jinxing it, but getting 4.5 points here should be like taking candy from a baby. The Irish, 2-2 ATS, have played better so far and I’m sure they haven’t forgotten about the 34-point blowout at Duke last February. Plus, Johnson is out for the Blue Devils, who are 0-4 ATS. HAMMER THE IRISH!

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS. The O/U 146.5 is just about right. I expect Notre Dame to get its share of transition baskets as Duke averages 16.0 turnovers per game. I’m just not sure the Blue Devils will hold up their half of the bargain in scoring, especially with Johnson on the shelf.

Illinois at Duke: Three things to know

  1. Illinois hung tough with then-No. 1 Baylor before the Bears pulled away for an 82-69 win in the Jimmy V Classic on Dec. 2. The Fighting Illini now sit at 2-2 ATS and their three wins came against weak competition. Illinois has a staggering plus-25.5-rebound per game differential. Sophomore 7-foot C Kofi Cockburn is top-50 in both offensive and defensive rebounding percentage.
  2. Duke bounced back from a 75-69 loss to then-No. 12 Michigan State to beat the brakes off of Bellarmine 76-54. Duke didn’t cover a 30.5-point spread and the Blue Devils are 0-3 ATS and 0-2-1 O/U on the year primarily because their offense hasn’t come around yet. The Blue Devils are 143rd in points per game and 129th in field-goal shooting.
  3. The Fighting Illini returned 68.3% of their scoring from last year’s team and Duke returns just 30.3% of its scoring, according to SportsReference.com.

Illinois at Duke: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Illinois 74, Duke 68

Money line (ML)

In Illinois’ recent history under head coach Brad Underwood, this is a bad spot for the Fighting Illini. I laid out the case for Baylor covering against Illinois last week and cited some of its poor situational trends in a similar spot.

Duke starts four underclassmen (as per usual) and I have a hunch legendary head coach Mike Krzyzewski is a better recruiter than a teacher at this point.

The Blue Devils won’t have the Cameron Crazies to rattle Illinois and I give the edge to the newer program looking to get more recognition nationally by taking down Duke on ESPN.

I’ll split the bet between the money line and spread so TAKE ILLINOIS +140 for a half-unit.

Against the spread (ATS)

There’s no doubt Duke has more talent but it has little experience and Illinois’ ability to control the glass is the biggest factor. The Blue Devils rank 180th in opponents’ rebounds per game and Duke hasn’t shown enough on offense to overcome such a rebounding disadvantage.

GIMME ILLINOIS +3.5 (+100) for 1.5 units.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Fighting Illini’s early-season offensive efficiency against weaker competition dragged this total up in my opinion. Their experience will help them prevail but Duke’s talent and raw athleticism will keep this a tighter game. The closer Illinois-Duke is, the slower the game’s pace will be.

I only lean UNDER 146.5 (-105) because we could get backdoored by late free throws.

Michigan State at Duke: Three things to know

  1. Michigan State is coming off an impressive 80-70 win over Notre Dame, covering an 8.5-point number. MSU is 1-1 ATS with a pair of Over results so far. The Spartans have been aided by 38.0 percent shooting from behind the 3-point line, but they’re struggling from the free-throw stripe at 75.0 percent.
  2. Marquette transfer F Joey Hauser has been an instant smash hit for Michigan State in his first two contests, going for 12.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game. F Marcus Bingham Jr. is averaging 3.0 blocked shots per game.
  3. Duke was a 39.5-point favorite over Coppin State of the MEAC in its opening game, but the Blue Devils struggled in the 81-71 win with a push on the total (152). The Blue Devils originally were supposed to open their season vs. Gardner-Webb, but the game was postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the Runnin’ Bulldogs program.

Michigan State 81, Duke 77

Money line (ML)

MICHIGAN STATE (+140) is worth a look at plus-money, as the Spartans have opened with a pair of wins, including a quality victory against Notre Dame.

On the flip side, Duke really struggled against Coppin State. The Blue Devils led 45-28 at the break, but they were outscored by the Eagles 43-36 in the second half. Coppin State outworked Duke, posting 12 steals to six. Plus, Duke turned it over 22 times to just eight for the heavy underdog. If the Blue Devils do that against Sparty, they’re going to get their doors blown off.

Against the spread (ATS)

MICHIGAN STATE +4.5 (-134) is a strong play on the road, and the good news is that it won’t have to contend with the Cameron Crazies. The home-court advantage will be wiped out, and perhaps the lack of fans will make the biggest difference in Duke home games. The Spartans are off to a hot start, and they’ll get by the Blue Devils in this one.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 151.5 (-115) is a strong play, as Michigan State has hit the Over in each of its outings, and Duke pushed on the total in its one game. The Blue Devils likely were going to go well Over, but they couldn’t take care of the basketball. It’s doubtful they turn it over 22 times in this one, and they’ll convert some of those empty opportunities down the floor into more points.

  1. The Blue Devils had last week’s game against Wake Forest wiped out by COVID-19 concerns, and they haven’t taken the field since Nov. 7. They were waffled 56-24 by UNC last time out, and they are 1-3 straight up and 2-2 ATS in four road games this season.
  2. The Yellow Jackets are on a three-game slide, averaging just 15.7 points per game while allowing 50.7 PPG during the span. Like Duke, they have had COVID-related issues in their recent schedule, and they haven’t been on the field since Oct. 31, a 31-13 loss but cover against Notre Dame.
  3. Duke is 2-5 ATS in its past seven road games and 2-6-1 ATS in the past seven against teams with a losing record. The Blue Devils are a solid 9-2 ATS in their previous 11 games following a bye. Georgia Tech is 6-16 ATS in its last 22 games, and 3-10 ATS in the previous 13 at home. Duke has cashed in four of the past five trips to Atlanta, and six in a row in this series.

DUKE (-115) is worth a look on the money line, as it’s playing a little better brand of football lately. The Blue Devils are 2-2 SU/ATS in their past four, and their offense has looked at least functional while the defense was really only shredded in the Victory Bell game against UNC. Georgia Tech (-106) has routinely been getting knocked around, and cannot be trusted on D.

Against the spread (ATS)

DUKE -1 (-110) will win this game by at least a touchdown. Over the years, in good times and in bad ones, the Blue Devils have been a thorn in the side of the Ramblin’ Wreck. Look for Duke to pick up its third win of the season, and its second on the road.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 57.5 (-115) is the strongest option on the board. The Over is 5-1 in the past six games for the Blue Devils, as they have posted 20 or more points in each of their past six while allowing 24 or more in four of the past five. We touched on Georgia Tech’s defensive woes, as it’s allowing 50.7 PPG over its last three games.
