Seahawks, Duane Brown agree to rework final year of contract

It seems Brown will be getting a $7 million signing bonus plus another $4 million in salary.

According to a report by Jeremy Fowler at ESPN, the Seattle Seahawks and their starting left tackle Duane Brown have come to an agreement to rework his contract as it enters its final year.

It seems Brown will be getting a $7 million signing bonus plus another $4 million in salary.

Brown is also getting injury protection for next season.

Prior to this new agreement, Brown’s previous deal was set to pay him $10 million in base salary. In the hopes of getting a new contract, Brown had been “holding-in” at Seahawks training camp by showing up but not actually practicing. He was a full participant yesterday, though.

Brown turned 36 years old last week and has been in the league since 2008. He’s still blocking at a high level, though.

The other Seahawk who has a contract dispute is free safety Quandre Diggs, but he also returned to practice yesterday. Both are expected to play in Sunday’s regular season opener against the Colts.

Seahawks, Duane Brown talking again in effort to end contract dispute before season

According to Mike Garafolo at NFL Network, Seattle and Brown are engaging again in an effort to end the hold-in before the 2021 season begins.

The last we heard on the impasse between the Seattle Seahawks and left tackle Duane Brown, the negotiations had stalled and the two sides were not actively engaging in contract talks.

While there’s been no deal as of yet, at least they’re talking again. According to Mike Garafolo at NFL Network, Seattle and Brown are engaging again in an effort to end the hold-in before the 2021 season begins.

Brown is entering the final year of his current contract, which will pay him $10 million in base salary. Brown feels he’s earned a new deal, but the team prefers to wait until after this season to address that.

The Seahawks have a fair point in that Brown will turn 36 years old in a few days and it makes sense to go year to year with anyone at that point in their career. That said, Brown still plays his position at a high level.

Pete Carroll has said he’s not concerned about Brown potentially missing Week 1’s matchup with the Colts. However, if it does come to that the Seahawks may risk injuring their most valuable asset. Backup quarterback Geno Smith suffered a concussion not even one full quarter into the preseason with Brown on the bench, underscoring the dangers of starting an unproven lineman on the blindside.

For his part, Russell Wilson seems to be on Brown’s side – saying Seattle needs him out there.

Seahawks want to address Duane Brown’s contract after this season

Brown’s current deal will pay him $10 million in base salary this season, which ranks No. 16 among left tackles.

Seahawks left tackle Duane Brown is about to turn 36 years old and he’s appeared in 186 regular season games already. However, he’s still blocking at a high level. That’s one of the reasons Brown wants a new contract before the 2021 season begins and why he’s staging a “hold-in” at training camp by showing up but not practicing.

Brown doesn’t seem to be getting anywhere, though. According to a report by Bob Condotta at the Seattle Times, the team wants to keep him but they want to wait until next year. There are no active negotiations.

“Sources have said the team is not in active negotiations with Brown, having told Brown they want to keep him but want to get through the 2021 season before addressing his contract situation.”

Brown’s current deal will pay him $10 million in base salary this season, which ranks No. 16 among left tackles.

The Seahawks’ position is understandable given Brown’s age. However, they’re running the risk of alienating their best offensive lineman as well as their franchise quarterback, who’s gone out of his way to support Brown. Russell Wilson recently told reporters “age is just a number” and Brown is playing like he’s 28 or 30. The team is also very thin at OT if Brown is taken out of the equation. In tomorrow night’s preseason opener Stone Forsythe is expected to start at left tackle.

Jamal Adams is also in a contract dispute and is staging a similar hold-in. Seattle has reportedly made their “final offer” to the star safety.
