Giants’ Dru Phillips, Adoree’ Jackson out vs. Cowboys in Week 4

New York Giants cornerbacks Dru Phillips and Adoree’ Jackson are out against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 4 due to calf injuries.

The New York Giants will continue their regular season slate against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Because of the quick turnaround, the Giants will limp into the Week 4 game down two key cornerbacks: rookie Dru Phillips and veteran Adoree’ Jackson.

“I think it’s always difficult for these guys on a short week, the routine. Again, you’ve got to play them when they’re called upon. We’re doing the best we can. Our walkthroughs, extra meetings, extra walkthroughs,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters on Tuesday.

Nose tackle Dexter Lawrence was also limited on Wednesday with a knee injury but did not receive an injury designation.

Giants projected injury report: Dru Phillips, Adoree’ Jackson sit out

The New York Giants released a projected injury report for Monday with cornerbacks Dru Phillips and Adoree’ Jackson sitting out.

The New York Giants did not escape their Week 3 win in Cleveland unscathed.

They have several new names on their injury report on Monday. With the Dallas Cowboys coming to town in three days, they’ll have very little time to heal up.

“We’ll do walkthroughs, have a lot of meeting time, some extra meeting time, extra walkthroughs to get prepared for this game,” Daboll said.

Cornerbacks Dru Phillips and Adoree’ Jackson both sat out Monday’s walkthrough with calf injuries.

Defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence (foot), linebacker Micah McFadden (back), and wide receiver Darius Slayton (thumb), who were all hurt in Sunday’s game, were projected as limited on Monday.

Defensive back Nick McCloud (knee), who was inactive on Sunday, was also limited.

Center John Michael Schmitz (neck) and right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor (thumb) participated fully.

Ex-Giant believes rookie Dru Phillips is going to be a ‘stud’

Former New York Giants DB Ryan Clark believes rookie cornerback Dru Phillips is going to be a “stud” with a long career.

The New York Giants have had few bright spots over the first two weeks of the regular season, but one is rookie cornerback Dru Phillips. General manager Joe Schoen took Phillips in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft.

The Giants were in desperate need of a playmaker in their secondary following the departure of Xavier McKinney, who left via free agency this past offseason.

Phillips was all over the field against both the Minnesota Vikings and Washington Commanders, flashing as an impact player for Big Blue.

Because of his play, Phillips has caught the eye of a former Giants defensive back Ryan Clark.

Clark, of course, began his career with the Giants in 2002 after going undrafted. He ended up having a lengthy career with the Washington franchise and Pittsburgh Steelers after his time with the Giants

Phillips has stood out not just because of his speed and physicality, but also because of his open-field tackling. If the Giants’ front seven continue to disappoint the way they have in the first two games of the season, the team will need their secondary to step up in order to be competitive moving forward.

In Week 1, Phillips forced a fumble on his very first NFL play and followed that up with an extremely impressive performance against the Commanders in which he recorded 12 tackles and a red zone sack.

With the Giants’ season quickly getting away from them, there will be an increased focus on Schoen’s draft picks and their development. He’ll need players like Phillips to remain hot so that his seat stays cool.

Giants ‘probably’ moving CB Cor’Dale Flott back outside

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll says they will “probably” move cornerback Cor’Dale Flott back outside beginning in Week 2.

This past offseason, the New York Giants revamped their secondary by drafting safety Tyler Nubin in the second round and cornerback Dru Phillips in Round 3.

The plan was to slide Phillips into the slot and move Cor’Dale Flott to the outside to fill the void left by Adoree’ Jackson, whose contract expired in March.

That plan was derailed by Flott’s quad injury which kept him off the field for the final two weeks of camp. The Giants went with Nick McCloud and Tre Hawkins III in Flott’s absence — both of whom battled Flott for the starting role.

In the end, the Giants turned back to Jackson, who was still unsigned, last week. Jackson and McCloud split time on the outside on Sunday while Flott played mainly inside, where he hadn’t lined up since last season.

In addition, Phillips, who played mainly in the slot this summer, was only on the field for 16 snaps.

It was a curious decision by the Giants, one that head coach Brian Daboll was quizzed on Monday during his media session.

“Yeah, Flott. Just getting ready to go here for the first game, we thought that that was the best thing for us,” he said of lining Flott up in the slot.

“Now, is that going to stay the same? Probably not, to be honest with you. Flott will probably play outside more. But for this week, that’s what we thought was best.”

The secondary is completely in flux, as is the entire defense. First-year defensive coordinator Shane Bowen’s scheme is still very fresh to most of the players.

The Giants have a mainstay at the other corner in Deonte Banks and at safety with Jason Pinnock. Nubin played every snap on Sunday and played well.

It’s just that one outside corner position. It’s there waiting for Flott to take it over.

Giants’ Brian Daboll: Malik Nabers is fine, not out long term

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll said rookie WR Malik Nabers (ankle) is “fine” and won’t be out long term, plus other injury updates.

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll updated the media on the health of first-round pick Malik Nabers on Tuesday morning, saying that the emerging star wide receiver was “good” and that his ankle injury was not a “long term” issue and “not serious.”

Nabers will not practice on Tuesday and the Giants will have an off day Wednesday. They will hit the practice field on Thursday before heading down to Houston on Friday for Saturday’s preseason game against the Texans.

In other injury news, Daboll said that tight end Lawrence Cager has a groin injury and is going to miss some time. Center John Michael Schmitz (shoulder) and right tackle Evan Neal (foot) will be practicing in team periods on Tuesday.

Daboll also gave updates on other injuries such as guards Jon Runyan Jr. (shoulder) and Jake Kubas (shoulder), tight end Tyree Jackson (back), cornerback Dru Phillips (ankle), and running back Dante Miller (hamstring).

Runyan will see scaled-back reps, while Miller may sit out of practice entirely. Phillips may also be held out of practice but Jackson will “give it a go.”

Finally, quarterback Drew Lock (hip) continues to improve and Daboll would not rule out the veteran playing on Saturday.

Giants’ Brian Daboll on Malik Nabers’ injury: ‘Don’t think it’s fractured’

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll doesn’t think WR Malik Nabers’ injury is a fracture and if he’s ready to play in Week 1, he will.

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll declared on Monday that wide receiver Malik Nabers, the team’s first-round pick in this year’s NFL draft, is “day-to-day” after injuring his ankle/foot and limping off at Sunday’s practice.

Daboll also said he doesn’t believe Nabers suffered a fracture.

The latter part of that comment where Daboll said he doesn’t think it’s a fracture indicates that no X-ray has been taken of the foot/ankle as of yet. However, he added that medical evaluations are ongoing.

Daboll also said the injury was of the non-contact variety as Nabers wasn’t stepped on. His foot just “buckled a bit.”

When asked about Nabers’ Week 1 status, Daboll continued to be somewhat vague and ominous.

“If he’s ready to play, then he’ll play,” the coach said.

Also not practicing on Monday is another rookie, defensive back Dru Phillips. He “tightened up” on Sunday.

Center John Michael Schmitz (shoulder) is back practicing but is likely to be held out of Saturday’s game versus the Texans in Houston. In fact, Daboll said that Schmitz and right tackle Evan Neal (ankle) were “longshots” to play this week.

Daboll provided some good news on backup quarterback Drew Lock (hip). He could be in uniform come Saturday. The Giants will not be adding a quarterback this week, instead opting to fill their open roster spot with a running back, Lorenzo Lingard.

The Giants will practice Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday this week before heading to Houston on Friday ahead of Saturday’s preseason game versus the Texans.
