Alabama staff member Drew Svoboda lands coordinator job at North Texas

Alabama football is losing another staff member to a coordinator role at another program.

Pete Thamel of ESPN is reporting that Alabama’s senior special assistant to the head coach, Drew Svoboda has landed a coordinator role at North Texas.

Svoboda has spent the last two years in Tuscaloosa, first joining the program as the tight ends coach and special teams coordinator in the spring of 2021 before taking an off-the-field role as the senior special assistant to head coach [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] for the Tide’s 2022 campaign.

Svoboda is the second Alabama staff member to land a coordinator job at another program for the upcoming season. Safeties coach Charles Kelly was hired as the defensive coordinator at Colorado. Svoboda and Kelly are expected to remain with the Crimson Tide through the bowl game on Dec. 31.

Report: Alabama hiring Drew Svoboda to replace Jay Graham

Alabama has found its replacement for Jay Graham. Drew Svoboda is joining the Crimson Tide staff as the new special teams/tight ends coach.

The hole on Alabama’s coaching staff didn’t last long. According to Bama Insider, the Crimson Tide are hiring Drew Svoboda as their new special teams coordinator and tight end coach.

Svoboda has been the special teams coach at Memphis since January after coming over from Rice. It was a short stint, but when you’ve got a chance to join arguably the top coaching staff in the country, it’s hard to pass up.

The position originally became available because the newly hired Jay Graham is stepping away from coaching for mental health reasons. He was only on the job two months, and the timing at least gave Nick Saban and company a little time to find his replacement.

Prior to joining Rice, Svoboda was a high school football in the state of Texas. When he made the jump to the college level in 2018, he started off a the Owls’ running back coach before making the switch to special teams.

It’s been quite the climb, but Saban obviously sees something he likes.

Will Reichard and other special teamers have to be excited to have the void filled.

Alabama reportedly has new special teams coordinator in mind

Alabama is targeting Memphis special teams coordinator Drew Svoboda for the opening created by the resignation of Jay Graham last week.

Alabama suddenly lost newly hired assistant coach Jay Graham last week. The special teams and tight ends coach decided to take some time away from the game for his mental health, which is more than respectable.

Unfortunately, that left the Crimson Tide searching for a replacement option. It’s not ideal timing, but Nick Saban could have someone in mind.

According to Matt Zenitz with AL.com, Alabama could be targeting Memphis special teams coordinator Drew Svoboda for its recent opening at the position.

This is what AL.com had to say about Svoboda:

Svoboda is a former Texas high school coach who won 93 games in 10 years at Klein Collins High School in Houston before making the move to the college level in 2018 with Rice. He was hired at Memphis in January.

It sounds like he’s an up-and-coming guy, which could make him an appealing addition for the next several years. Let’s see what happens with it.
