Joel Bitonio and KhaDarel Hodge test positive for COVID-19, will miss wild-card game

Coaches Drew Petzing and Jeff Howard also tested positive

The bad news just keeps flowing for the Cleveland Browns. Per reports from NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero and quickly echoed by several others, Pro Bowl left guard Joel Bitonio and wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss Sunday’s wild-card game in Pittsburgh against the Steelers.

Because both players tested positive, they must remain away from the team for at least 10 days.

Bitonio is the longest-tenured Browns player and was due to make his postseason debut. He’s also an invaluable member of the top-rated offensive line.

Hodge primarily serves as the team’s No. 4 wideout but also plays a significant role on special teams.

In addition to the players, tight ends coach Drew Petzing and defensive backs coach Jeff Howard have also tested positive and will miss the game, along with head coach Kevin Stefanski.

Callie Brownson will coach the Browns TEs on Sunday, making her the first female interim coach in NFL history

Callie Brownson and the Cleveland Browns will make history on Sunday. Bronson will serve as an interim coach for the Browns, filling in for tight ends coach Drew Petzing for a week.

That will make Brownson the first woman to ever coach an NFL position group in a regular-season game. Brownson is the team’s chief of staff under head coach Kevin Stefanski, where her duties include handling the alterations to practices and player availability due to recent COVID-19 positive tests.

Petzing is missing the game to be with his wife, who gave birth to their first child on Saturday and will not travel with the team.

Browns TE coach Drew Petzing expecting ‘big things’ from Austin Hooper and David Njoku

Petzing came with coach Kevin Stefanski from the Minnesota Vikings

Browns tight ends coach Drew Petzing tagged along with Kevin Stefanski in moving from the Minnesota Vikings staff to Cleveland. A former intern with the Browns before he moved up the ranks in six years in Minnesota, Petzing is happy to be back in Cleveland. He’s also happy about having talents like Austin Hooper and David Njoku to work with in his new gig.

Petzing is already excited about the quick chemistry between Hooper and quarterback Baker Mayfield. The duo has been lighting it up throughout the first week of training camp.

“They developed a great friendship throughout the process and it definitely shows up on the field,” Petzing told Nathan Zegura of Browns Live. “I think they got a great feel for what the other is thinking and what the other is going to do and it allows us to be that much more dynamic on offense.”

Petzing also touched on Njoku and his work thus far.

“He’s been great,” said of the star-crossed Njoku. “From the moment we started working together virtually in the offseason and even through the summer, our conversations have been really positive. He came here in great shape and he’s been working his tail off in terms of learning the system.”

Petzing added,

“We’re definitely going to rely on everyone we have in that room and we expect big things from them.”
