Former Vol Drew Pember announces transfer destination

Drew Pember transfers to UNC Asheville.

A former University of Tennessee basketball player has announced where he will continue his collegiate career.

Drew Pember, a 6-foot-10, 190-pound post player announced on Wednesday that he has committed to UNC Asheville.

He entered the NCAA transfer portal following the Volunteers’ 2020-21 season, which saw them finish 18-9 and lose during the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Last season, Pember appeared in 10 games for Tennessee and averaged less than three minutes per game.

With the Bulldogs, Pember will be reunited with high school teammate Trent Stephney.

Together, the duo, along with Ques Glover, led Knoxville’s Bearden High School to the 2019 TSSAA Class AAA State Championship.

Glover, who spent two seasons with Florida, has also entered the transfer portal. He has yet to announce his destination.

Trio of Vols departing basketball program

Three Tennessee players are leaving the Vols’ basketball program.

Three student-athletes have announced they are departing Tennessee’s men’s basketball program.

Freshman Jaden Springer will sign with an agent and declare for the 2021 NBA draft.

The 2021 NBA draft will take place on July 29. The NBA draft lottery takes place on June 22, while the combine will be held June 21-27.

Sophomores Davonte Gaines and Drew Pember have also entered the NCAA transfer portal.

The Vols finished the 2020-21 season 18-9 (10-7 SEC), losing in the first-round of the NCAA Tournament to Oregon State.

Former KIL stars shine against Alabama State

Former KIL stars shine against Alabama State.

KNOXVILLE — Tennessee’s men’s basketball team did as expected Wednesday night.

The Volunteers (4-0) routed Alabama State 76-41 at Thompson-Boling Arena and it was a big night for a pair of former Knoxville Area high school basketball stars.

For starters, Jordan Bowden eclipsed 1,000 points for his career.

Bowden, a senior guard, scored 16 points against the Hornets Wednesday. He played his high school basketball at Carter High School in the East Knox County community of Strawberry Plains.

Freshman forward Drew Pember scored his first collegiate points against Alabama State.

Pember had eight points, five rebounds (two offensive, three defensive), two blocks and one assist.

Pember was a stand out at Bearden High School, where he played in three Class AAA State Tournaments and won the 2018-19 state championship.

Tennessee’s Lamonte Turner also scored his 1,000th career point against the Hornets.
