The Pirates dugout had the most wholesome reaction to 33-year-old Drew Maggi’s first MLB hit

How can you not be romantic about baseball?

Saturday was likely a bittersweet day for Pirates infielder Drew Maggi. The 33-year-old had spent 13 seasons in the minor leagues before getting that much-awaited call to the big leagues last week.

And while his stay in Pittsburgh was short-lived, Maggi will always be able to say that he has a Major League hit.

The Pirates optioned Maggi to Double-A Altoona ahead of Saturday’s doubleheader with the Nationals, but they also designated Maggi as the 27th man for the games — meaning that he’d be active for one more day before returning to the minor leagues. Before Saturday, Maggi was hitless in his four MLB plate appearances, but that changed in Saturday’s 16-1 win over the Nationals.

Batting in the seventh inning, Maggi hit a line drive up the middle for an RBI single and his first career hit.

But look at the dugout’s reaction. They were so thrilled.

It doesn’t get much cooler than that. Maggi had been grinding 13 years in pursuit of his dream — all leading to that moment. Even if it was Maggi’s final night with the big-league club, it was cool to see the genuine happiness from the Pirates players. They were so proud of him.

He’d add to the hit total with a double in the ninth inning.

Maggi can tell everyone he knows that he’s a career .333 MLB hitter. Fans also loved that moment for Maggi.

Pirates’ Drew Maggi hit with pitch-clock violation in first MLB at-bat after 13 seasons in the minors

Let Drew Maggi have his moment!

After nearly one month of play during the 2023 season, Major League Baseball’s pitch clock has certainly made games faster. That being said, there are definitely wrinkles that can be ironed out.

On Wednesday, long-time minor leaguer Drew Maggi made his highly-anticipated MLB debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates at 33 years old. Maggi spent 13 seasons in the minor leagues before finally earning his first-ever MLB at-bat in the eighth inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Unfortunately, Maggi was tagged with a pitch-clock violation during his first MLB at-bat, a ruling which his Pirates teammates and the Pittsburgh faithful were none too happy about.

Maggi was eventually rung up on strikes to end his first plate appearance in the major leagues, but what an eventful one it was!

Pittsburgh minor leaguer Drew Maggi had the best reaction to finally getting called up to play in MLB after 13 years

After 13 years and 1,154 minor league games, Pirates infielder Drew Maggi will finally get his chance to join The Show.

After years spent as one of the MLB’s “phantom players,” Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Drew Maggi will finally get his shot to play in The Show.

After the Pirates placed outfielder Bryan Reynolds on the bereavement list on Sunday, Pittsburgh selected Maggi’s contract for the team’s 40-man roster.

Maggi’s promotion from Double-A Altoona was the culmination of 13 years in professional baseball without ever actually being called up to the majors.

“Phantom players” hold that difficult distinction, being hypothetical MLB players who have appeared on a professional roster without actually playing in an MLB game.

Maggi was selected in the 15th round by the Pirates in 2010 and has bounced around the league in the minors with various franchises ever since. Now, he’ll get to suit up for the team that drafted him all those years ago.

After playing in 1,154 minor league games in 13 seasons, it’s finally Maggi’s time to shine. His reaction to being called up was just priceless.

Some NSFW language to follow.

Maggi will help the Pirates for their Sunday afternoon tilt against the Cincinnati Reds.

While the game might just be a weekend matinee for some, it’s the sweet, sweet payoff for years of patience and grinding it out for Maggi.
