Cardinals offseason positional outlook: QB

What are the burning questions surrounding the quarterback position this offseason?

The Arizona Cardinals are working on their offseason plans for 2020, hoping to take a big step after a 5-10-1 2019 season. Over the next few days, we will look at each position group and where the Cardinals stand, looking ahead to what could happen in the offseason.

We begin with the quarterback position.

Looking back at 2019

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

2019 was all about Kyler Murray. Selected first overall in the 2019 draft, he entered the season as the starter and played almost every snap, coming out of only two games.

He set all sorts of team rookie records — passing yards, passing attempts, touchdown passes, wins and more. He set league rookie records. He set a franchise record for rushing yards by a quarterback. He became only the second rookie to pass for at least 3,500 yards and rush for at least 500 more. He had the eighth-highest single-season total in passing yards in team history. He had one of the lowest interception percentages in team history.

Entering the year with high expectations, he more than met every single one.

Backup Brett Hundley played very well in the preseason and made plays in the second half of the Cardinals’ win over the Seattle Seahawks when Murray left with a hamstring injury.

4 players on Cardinals’ roster who could be ready to replace a free agent

These players potentially could jump into the role that one of the Cardinals’ many free agents had last season.

The Arizona Cardinals have a large group of free agents entering the offseason. For some of them, the Cardinals don’t really have a replacement for them already on the roster. For some, there are players who could potentially slide into the role.

Who are those who could fill the role of potential departed free agents?

OL Mason Cole

Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

All signs point toward A.Q. Shipley returning in 2020. However, if he and the Cardinals can’t come to terms, they do have Cole. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury considers Cole a starting-caliber offensive lineman and gave him offensive snaps at all three interior positions in the season’s final games just to get him on the field.

Cole battled Shipley for the starting center job right up to the end of the preseason. Having drafted Lamont Gaillard, Cole could slide into the starting role and Gaillard could be the versatile interior backup.

Cardinals promote QB Drew Anderson to roster with Kyler Murray’s uncertain availability

The addition of Anderson allows the Cardinals to cover all possible scenarios on Sunday against the Rams.

The Arizona Cardinals made an expected roster move on Saturday to address quarterback Kyler Murray’s hamstring injury. They promoted rookie quarterback Drew Anderson to the 53-man roster, as he might be the backup quarterback in the season finale against the Los Angeles Rams.

To make room for Anderson, the Cardinals placed tight end Darrell Daniels on injured reserve with a biceps injury. He was already ruled out for the game.

Murray is officially questionable for the game. Brett Hundley got more practice reps during the week and is ready to start.

If Hundley starts, the question would then be whether Murray will be inactive or not. They could make Anderson inactive and keep Murray as the backup, make Murray inactive or have both Murray and Anderson active for the game.

Inactive lists will be released 90 minutes before kickoff on Sunday.

The Rams and Cardinals kick off at 2:25 p.m. Arizona time.
