Wisconsin class of 2025 defensive tackle commit named Defensive Player of the Year

Wisconsin class of 2025 defensive tackle commit Drayden Pavey was named Ohio D4 Defensive Player of the Year on Thursday.

Pavey, who pledged his commitment to UW on Oct. 22, earned the nod after a dominant senior season with Taft High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. The class of 2025 prospect registered 87 total tackles, 52 solo tackles 11.5 sacks, 24 tackles for loss and one fumble recovery in 11 games during his final high school season.

The 6-foot-3, 305-pound recruit flipped to the Badgers roughly three months after initially committing to Purdue. He became Wisconsin’s 24th commitment of its 2025 cohort, a bunch that On3 currently considers the eighth-best in the Big Ten.

247Sports currently ranks the three-star defensive tackle as the No. 737 overall player in the class of 2024, the No. 85 player at his position and the No. 29 recruit from his home state of Ohio. Pavey is the fourth defensive linemen in Wisconsin’s class of 2025 alongside three-stars Torin Pettaway, Wilnerson Telemaque and Xavier Ukponu.

Pavey’s spectacular output at Taft should certainly encourage Badger fans. Given the program’s struggle to secure defensive line commitments early in the 2025 recruiting window, Pavey looks like he’s the real deal.

Wisconsin landed a commitment from class of 2025 defensive tackle Drayden Pavey on Tuesday.

The news follows Pavey backing out of his original commitment to Purdue this weekend. Just days later, he now flips to the Badgers — who were among his initial finalists back in July.

Pavey is commitment No. 24 for the Badgers in a class. His addition keeps the group as 247Sports’ No. 28-ranked overall class and No. 10-ranked in the new Big Ten Conference.

Big Ten recruiting classes ranked ahead of the Badgers include Ohio State (No. 1 in the nation), Oregon (No. 9), USC (No. 10), Michigan (No. 14), Penn State (No. 15), Washington (No. 18), Nebraska (No. 23), Maryland (No. 24) and Rutgers (No. 26).

Despite its ranking within the Big Ten, Wisconsin’s class is a strong follow-up output for Luke Fickell after he finished the 2024 cycle with a program-best group. The biggest difference between the two classes are their blue-chip ratios. 2025 is at 21% (5/24) while 2024 reached 50% (11/22). Otherwise, national rankings of No. 28 and No. 24, respectively, aren’t far apart.

Wisconsin will look to bring momentum from its strong play onto the field into the rest of the 2025 recruiting cycle and beyond. A win over Penn State on Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium could provide a launching point for the Fickell era with the program.

Wisconsin football receives Rivals forecast to land 2025 three-star DL

Wisconsin football received a Rivals’ FutureCast prediction to land class of 2025 three-star defensive lineman Drayden Pavey on Sunday.

The prediction comes from Wisconsin insider Jon McNamaraon on the heels of Pavey’s June 14 official visit with the Badgers. The 6-foot-3, 305-pounder included UW, Purdue and Indiana in his top three in early May.

Pavey became the second Badgers target to receive a prediction to land in Madison on Sunday, joining fellow three-star DL Wilnerson Telemaque.

Pavey is 247Sports’ No. 102 defensive lineman in the class of 2025 and No. 43 recruit from his home state of Ohio. Wisconsin extended its offer to the three-star on April 21, and the rising senior has received 22 in total.

Rivals currently has Wisconsin’s 2025 recruiting class ranked No. 6 in the nation. The group has 19 commitments and eight since official visits began in June. Pavey would be the second defensive lineman to join the group after the Badgers flipped Minnesota commit Torin Pettaway.

Wisconsin’s defensive line depth chart this fall includes James Thompson Jr., Curt Neal, Ben Barten, Elijah Hills (transfer) and Brandon Lane — a flipped transfer commit from Louisville.

Pavey, alongside three-star defensive linemen Telemaque and Kyler Garcia, are among Wisconsin’s main defensive priorities during a month littered with official visits for some of the most talented recruits in the nation.

Even though Pavey elected to not include NC State in his final batch of schools, the cancelation indicates his resolve surrounding his choice. UW has a real chance to land another defensive weapon.
