UNC’s Drake Maye is among the four best odds to win the Heisman

Drake Maye is “quietly” having a Heisman Trophy-contending season. It’s time for the national media to catch up.

Through the first 12 weeks of the college football season, all the Heisman Trophy discussions have been aimed at CJ Stroud, Caleb Williams, Hendon Hooker, and more recently Bo Nix.

However, North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye is having a monster season. The redshirt freshman from Charlotte has been outperforming all of them. Maye is leading the nation in touchdown passes and second in yards.

Perhaps the game against Notre Dame, where UNC fell to the Irish has been keeping him out of the national discussion. In that game, all Maye did was throw for 301 yards and 5 touchdowns. Hard to knock him for that performance.

With just two weeks left in the regular season and three weeks before the ACC title game against Clemson, we broke down the top six Heisman Trophy contenders based on their odds to win it per Tipico Sportsbook.

UNC officially launches the Drake Maye for Heisman campaign

The UNC football program has officially launched a Drake Maye for Heisman campaign with three games left in the season.

The 2022 college football season is winding down as the UNC football program has two regular season games left and the Atlantic Coast Conference title game against Clemson.

One constant this year for the Tar Heels has been the play of quarterback Drake Maye. The redshirt freshman has been fantastic for UNC as they are off to a 9-1 start overall with Maye throwing for 3,412 yards, 34 touchdowns, and just 3 interceptions while completing 70.1 percent of his attempts. Maye has also added 584 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns.

Those stats are good enough to be in consideration for the Heisman Trophy and the Tar Heels have officially launched his campaign:

While the national media is starting to give more respect to Maye and his chances for the Heisman, players like CJ Stroud, Bryce Young, Caleb Williams, Blake Corum, and Hendon Hooker are getting more recognition as the weeks continue on.

How close will Maye get to receiving an invite to New York? With three games left, he could use a big ‘Heisman’ moment to convince the voters.

Heisman Odds Week 11: C.J. Stroud still can’t separate himself from the rest of the field

C.J. Stroud is still the favorite, but the rest of the field is hanging around and ready to pounce.

Each week this college football season, BetFTW will take a look at the 2022 Heisman Trophy race and break down the contenders. Check back each Monday as the best college football players in the country jockey for position with both oddsmakers and bettors. Preseason odds can be found here and Week 10 here.

Only two games remain on Ohio State’s regular season schedule and the pressure is turning up on quarterback C.J. Stroud. Having already passed every test this season to the tune of 2,750 yards and 34 touchdowns passing on just four interceptions, the Buckeyes star now gets ready to face a pesky Maryland team before hosting No. 3 Michigan in what may as well be the Big Ten semifinal game.

If Stroud is going to win the Heisman, these are the only two guaranteed opportunities left to do so. And while he’s mostly been the favorite all year, Stroud has yet to separate himself from a crowded field.

Here’s how the board looks after Week 11.

Drake Maye predicted UNC would face Will Shipley, Clemson in ACC title game

UNC quarterback Drake Maye predicted that the Tar Heels and Clemson will face off in the ACC Championship Game back in 2020.

North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye is having himself one hell of a season as a redshirt freshman here in 2022. After winning the job this offseason, Maye has put together a Heisman-worthy season, leading the Tar Heels to a 9-1 record overall.

The win on Saturday over Wake Forest clinched the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal division and put the Tar Heels in Charlotte to face Clemson in the conference title game. While the two teams will meet in a few weeks in Charlotte, Maye actually predicted this a few years back.

In 2020, when UNC target Will Shipley committed to Clemson, Maye congratulated him with a tweet and mentioned “see you in the ACC Championship Game”.

Two years later, it’s happening:

Both players are North Carolina natives that were class of 2021 recruits and were both recruited by Clemson and UNC. Maye committed to Alabama before flipping to UNC in March of 2020.

Shipley committed to Clemson in May of 2020, just a few months later.

Now the two friends will see their squads facing off in early December with the ACC title on the line.

Joel Klatt says Drake Maye is ‘legit Heisman contender’

Another college football analyst says UNC football’s Drake Maye is a ‘legit Heisman contender’ after another terrific game from the star QB.

The UNC football program is not only a top-15 team in the country, it also has one of the best and most exciting players in college football.

Quarterback [autotag]Drake Maye[/autotag] has been sensational all season long and is a huge reason behind the success of North Carolina. The Tar Heels sit at 9-1 on the season and Saturday’s win against Wake Forest clinched the ACC Coastal Division and a trip to the ACC Championship game.

On Saturday, Maye passed for 448 yards and three touchdowns through the air. He also added 71 yards on the ground and a touchdown.

That performance was just the most recent terrific outing put together by Maye this season and that continues to have people discussing his potential Heisman candidacy.

FOX analyst Joel Klatt joined the discussion saying Maye is a ‘legit Heisman contender’.

On the season, Maye has totaled 3,412 passing yards (3rd in NCAA), 34 passing touchdowns (1st) and just three interceptions. He also has 584 yards on the ground with five rushing touchdowns.

Maye has seven games with 300+ passing yards and seven games with at least three passing touchdowns. Maye has thrown an interception in just two games this year.

There is no question Maye is one of the most important players to his team in the country, if not the most important. He has shown all season that he is also one of the best players in the country. If Maye is not among the group of finalists for the Heisman Trophy, there are some major issues with the award.

Twitter reacts to Drake Maye as potential Heisman candidate

Twitter reacted to UNC football quarterback Drake Maye and his Heisman chances after beating Wake Forest on Saturday night.

As each week goes by, UNC football quarterback Drake Maye makes his Heisman case more and more clear.

On Saturday, Maye passed for over 400 yards and racked up 519 total yards of offense and 4 total touchdowns in UNC’s 36-34 win on the road. The win locked up the Coastal Division and punched UNC’s ticket to the Atlantic Coast Conference title game in December.

It was another monster performance for the quarterback who is trying to add to his Heisman resume with the season winding down. As the rest of the country focuses on candidates like C.J. Stroud, Caleb Williams, Bryce Young and Blake Corum, Tar Heels’ fans and media members have been pushing for Maye to get more love.

And it looks like Saturday’s performance is starting to open more eyes.

Here is how Twitter reacted to Drake Maye’s performance and his Heisman hopes:

North Carolina clinches ACC championship ticket with win over Wake

North Carolina wins the shootout against Wake to clinch the ACC Coastal, earning them a bid in the ACC championship game.

The 8-1 North Carolina Tar Heels took on the 6-3 Demon Deacons in an old fashioned shoot-out. The Heels came out on top and clinched the ACC Coastal division, punching their ticket for an ACC championship bid.

An offensive game was expected, which was delivered as both teams traded scores all night. The game did start with a defensive stop as UNC was able to force Wake into punt during their opening drive. Then the offense explosion started, as North Carolina’s quarterback, Drake Maye, drove the Tar Heels down the field 91-yards in 10 plays, finding wide receiver Josh Downs for a 12-yard touchdown to cap off the drive.

On the next drive, Wake was forced to another punt, a quick three and out. UNC’s offense answered with another touchdown, this time moving the ball down the field for 69-yards in just 51 seconds of action ending with an Elijah Green 5-yard touchdown run. The Demon Deacons got on the scoreboard their next drive, with quarterback Sam Hartman finding wide receiver Taylor Morin for the 7-yard touchdown.

As you guessed it, the hot offense for UNC continued, scoring on their third straight drive with Maye connecting Downs for their second touchdown, this one on a 7-yard touchdown pass. Wake kept up the pace, returning the favor in a four-minute, 12-yard drive with running back Christian Turner finding the end-zone on a one-yard rushing touchdown.

Wake’s defense finally cooled off UNC’s offense, forcing them to punt, stopping the Heels from scoring in their fourth consecutive drive. Wake kept the offensive fireworks going, tying the score at 21 each after Hartman found wide receiver Donavon Greene for a 7-yard touchdown. The Heels retook the lead in five plays, as Maye found Downs for the third time in the first half, steaming from a 20-yard dot. UNC failed to convert the extra point, missing the kick, giving them just a six point lead

North Carolina goes into the half up 27-21.

UNC got the ball at the half first, but Wake got points on the board first, with North Carolina turning it over on downs on their second-half opening drive. Wake pushes the ball down the field 73-yards in just nine plays as Hartman finds A.T. Perry for a 32-yard touchdown.

North Carolina answered back, down key receivers Antoine Green and Josh Downs. It was Maye who created magic with a five-yard rushing touchdown. They went for two, but even with a redo after a pass interference, UNC could not muster up the two-point conversion, leading 33-28.

Wake stayed hot on the very next drive, with Hartman tossing his fourth touchdown pass of the game, this time a 60-yard bomb to wide receiver Donavon Greene. Wake had a chance to go up by three but, like UNC, could not convert their two-point conversion.

North Carolina opened the fourth quarter in a fourth-and-goal situation, going for it, but Wake denied the attempt and retook the ball. After Wake drove the field 91-yards, UNC had their turn to stop the Demon Deacons on fourth down, doing so with a massive stop to get the ball back in Maye’s hands.

UNC were unable to muster up any points, instead giving the ball back to Wake with under six minutes left to play.

When the ending seemed near for UNC, the defense came up with a massive turnover as Cam’Ron Kelly picked off Hartman to give North Carolina another chance. Maye led the Heels down the field but could not get in the end-zone, settling for a 33-yard field goal to retake the lead 36-34 with 2:12 left in the game.

With their last chance to win the ball game, Wake could not get it done as the Tar Heels’ defense made their most significant game stop.

UNC wins it 36-34, clinching the ACC Coastal for the first time since 2015.

Tanner Mordecai, Bo Nix and Drake Maybe make the Maxwell Award weekly honor roll

Find out who made the Maxwell Award’s weekly honor roll

Tanner Mordecai was named the Maxwell Award Player of the Week as the SMU quarterback had a huge game in a win versus Houston.

The senior quarterback threw for nine touchdowns and ran for another in what was one of the most exciting games of the college football season.

Bo Nix sparkled once again and it was yet another sharp performance from North Carolina freshman Drake Maye, who might just be the best quarterback in the nation right now. Maye has lived up to the hype and beyond in his performances this season.

The Maxwell Football Club awards the Maxwell Award, annually given to the nation’s top college football player. They also hand out the Chuck Bednarik Award for the top defensive player in college football.

Every March, the club hosts an annual awards gala at the Harrah’s in Atlantic City, N.J.

Check out the six players who made this week’s Maxwell Award Weekly Honor Roll!

UNC football offensive keys to the game vs Wake Forest

Taking a look at the offensive keys to the game for the UNC football program against Wake Forest this weekend.

The UNC football program heads to Wake Forest looking to continue its five-game winning streak.

Earlier this week, the 8-1 Tar Heels moved up two spots in the College Football Playoff rankings to No. 15.

Wake Forest welcomes in the UNC at 6-3 but have lost two in a row coming into this matchup.

The Demon Deacons hold one of the top offenses in the ACC, but struggle to keep opponents offenses out of the end zone.

North Carolina will look to continue its offensive dominance and will need to accomplish a few things in order to do so.

Here are the offensive keys to the game for the UNC football program.

Drake Maye takes over top spot in updated QB rankings

UNC football quarterback Drake Maye took the top spot in updated rankings by CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli after Week 10.

The Drake Maye love continues.

While UNC fans know just how good Maye can be, the rest of the national media is starting to find out. One analyst who has been on the Maye bandwagon early this year is CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli who releases weekly quarterback rankings during the season. Maye climbed as high as number two overall a few weeks back but this week, he’s in the top spot.

Fornelli ranked May as the top quarterback in all of college football this week after UNC moved to 8-1 on the year with the win over Virginia last Saturday afternoon. Maye moved up a few spots from No. 3 to No. 1:

It was a big week for QBs not having their best days, but Drake Maye moved to No. 1 this week because his bad day still included 293 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Virginia. I’ve been touting Maye all season long, and now draft analysts are saying things like he’d be the first QB taken in the draft this year if he came out. Now, take that with a grain of salt because they said the same thing about Kentucky’s Will Levis a few weeks ago, and the cycle of The Next Great QB Prospect always begins with “this guy I haven’t seen play for three years yet is great.” Then, when they enter their third year with the draft looming, they get nitpicked to death. So enjoy the love while you can, Drake. It won’t last forever.

Maye has been fantastic for the Tar Heels all season long but is not receiving the Heisman hype he should be getting. The only thing Maye can do right now is to continue to play at a high level and get the Tar Heels higher and higher on the College Football Playoff rankings.

Maybe then he will get the recognition he deserves.
