Heisman Odds: Can former Sooners QB Caleb Williams overcome C.J. Stroud to win the Heisman?

It’s safe to say that the 2022 Heisman Trophy will go to one of two players: Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud or USC quarterback Caleb Williams. The latter is someone Sooners fans know all too well.

When Lincoln Riley departed, he took players and coaches with him to Los Angeles. None are more valuable to the Trojans than former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Caleb Williams. If there was an MVP award in college football, Williams would be a shoo-in. The issues on the defensive side of the ball that plagued the Sooners for years have followed Riley and Williams to USC.

Funny, that.

USC’s offense has put up 40 points or more in each of their last five games, most recently in a 48-45 win against No. 16 UCLA. Williams is good. He’s very good.

When you’re doing things like this, it’s hard not to see him doing it on Sundays.

I might never forgive Jeff Lebby for not convincing Williams to stay if that was indeed on the table for Williams.

The oddsmakers over at BetMGM have Williams at +125 to win the Heisman. That’s second only to C.J. Stroud.

While Williams and USC winning football games this early in Riley’s tenure, it’s understandable that Sooners fans might be a bit upset. While I completely understand hoping that Lincoln Riley fails, Caleb Williams is his own man.

Williams fulfilled his commitment to OU. He doesn’t owe the school or the fanbase anything. Would I have preferred that he stayed in crimson and cream for two more years? Of course. He’s the best player in college football. I would’ve very much liked for the best player in college football to be a Sooner.

Caleb Williams will win the Heisman. If not this year then next. Eventually, he’ll be a top-three pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Will he win a national championship at USC? I wouldn’t go that far.

Let’s take a look at the odds for the other players in the Heisman race, numbers courtesy of BetMGM.

UNC football offensive keys to the game vs N.C. State

Taking a look at the offensive keys to the game for the UNC football program against NC State.

The UNC football program is back on the field this Friday looking to get back on the right side of the win/loss column.

Following a disappointing and shocking loss to Georgia Tech last week, mainly due to the offensive performance, this game becomes even more critical heading into an ACC Championship fight with Clemson.

Any and all momentum the Tar Heels had this year would be taken away if they limp into the ACC title game.

N.C. State comes into this matchup on a two-game losing streak and have been bounced from the top-25 as well.

The Tar Heels can’t get caught looking ahead because this Wolfpack team is ready for this matchup.

Here are the offensive keys to the game for UNC.

UNC wide receiver Antoine Green back at practice this week

UNC football wide receiver Antoine Green is back at practice this week after missing last week with an upper-body injury.

Coming off of an uncharacteristic performance from the offense, UNC football could be getting one of its best playmakers back this week for the regular season finale.

Wide receiver [autotag]Antoine Green[/autotag] has been in and out of the lineup this year and missed the UNC loss last week to Georgia Tech due to an upper-body injury.

According to head coach Mack Brown on Monday, however, Green will be back at practice this week and should play this weekend against NC State.

Green’s injury occurred in UNC’s win over Wake Forest when he was hit late after the play resulting in a targeting penalty.

Green has dealt with an upper-body injury the entire season. The UNC deep threat injured his collarbone in a preseason scrimmage and missed the first three games of the season. He returned to the field against Notre Dame.

On the season, Green has totaled 30 catches for 678 yards and six touchdowns.  His 22.6 yards per reception this season ranks third in the NCAA. He has three 100+ yard games this season and four catches of at least 50 yards.

The senior wide receiver brings an entirely different dimension to the offense when he’s on the field so getting him back for the last few games of the season would be significant.

UNC has already clinched a spot in the ACC Championship game on Dec. 3 against Clemson.

UNC offense has uncharacteristic night in loss to Georgia Tech

The UNC football program suffered a bad loss on Saturday to Georgia Tech in large part to an uncharacteristic night from the offense.

While the offense struggled immensely, it didn’t start like that. On UNC’s first play of the game, it was an 80-yard touchdown run for Elijah Green. Then, two possessions later, it was a 16-play methodical drive for the Tar Heels that ended in three points. After another possession that ended in a red zone trip but no points, the Tar Heels punched it in for seven shortly before the half.

It was a 17-0 lead with four minutes before halftime and things were going just about as expected. But then a late touchdown for Georgia Tech flipped things.

“Yeah, we didn’t score touchdowns in the red zone, we left 14 points off the board in the first half and then they go down and score very easily right before the half,” Brown said. “… So it’s a 14-point swing when it should have been a 14-point swing for us.”

In total, UNC had five red zone trips, and one other drive that ended at the GT 23 yard line. The Tar Heels came away with just one touchdown. Overall they were just a 2-of-5 red zone performance.

“I think our offense screwed the whole thing up,” Brown added. “Six sacks, can’t make third downs, can’t make fourth downs, can’t score in the red zone, dropped passes. We get a first down run where there’s a fumble and we lose 13 yards. There’s so many uncharacteristic things that happened tonight, it was a really, really awful night offensively.”

Maye, who came into the game without an interception in five games, threw one in the red zone on a very poor throw. He also had at least one touchdown in every single game this season. That streak ended on Saturday.

Maye finished with his worst performance of the year, going 16-of-30 for 202 yards and one interception. He also rushed for just 13 yards. Completions, passing yards and rushing yards were all season lows.

The connection between Maye and All-American candidate wide receiver [autotag]Josh Downs[/autotag] was also uncharacteristically off. Downs, who missed some of the first half with a knee injury, had just three catches for 31 yards… on just five targets.

Downs’ final catch of the game didn’t come until late in the fourth quarter on a key third down in Georgia Tech territory.

What ended up being Downs’ final target of the night summed up the entire game. On a fourth down play with 4:10 left in the game on the Georgia Tech 19 yard line, Downs was lined up in the backfield next to Maye. Maye rolled out to the right and found a wide open Downs in the corner of the end zone. The ball hit Downs right in the numbers and somehow goes right between his arms, falling to the ground and ending the comeback chance for the Tar Heels.

“You have a 60-yard run called back for a guy that runs over Bryson Nesbit and it’s thrown really, really late. You have a dropped touchdown pass, you have another dropped pass that they thought was a catch and a fumble and they rule that one off. It was a night where not one thing happened for us good offensively.”

Analyst makes case for why UNC football QB Drake Maye won’t win the Heisman

One college football analyst makes the case for why UNC football QB Drake Maye won’t win the Heisman Trophy.

The UNC football program is in the middle of one of its best seasons in recent memory, currently sitting at 9-1 on the year and undefeated in the ACC.

A large reason for that is the play under center with redshirt freshman [autotag]Drake Maye[/autotag]. Maye has not only become one of the best quarterbacks in the conference, but he has emerged in the conversation for the top player in the country.

His Heisman Trophy campaign is out there and he has been backed by numerous analysts around the country who think he deserves to not only be in the conversation, but be high on the list.

One analyst gave his take, however, for why Maye will not win the award… and he makes a pretty valid case.

Josh Pate of Late Kick Live and Late Kick Pod said the reason he won’t win is because too many votes haven’t seen UNC play this season.

The Tar Heels are ranked No. 13 in both the AP Poll and College Football Playoff rankings but there still seems to be a hesitation to move UNC up even more despite its record. That could ultimately hurt Maye’s chances.

On the season, Maye has totaled 3,412 passing yards (3rd in NCAA), 34 passing touchdowns (1st) and just three interceptions. He also has 584 yards on the ground with five rushing touchdowns.

Maye has seven games with 300+ passing yards and seven games with at least three passing touchdowns. Maye has thrown an interception in just two games this year.

UNC will two more chances to improve its record, ranking and Maye’s case before taking on Clemson in the ACC Championship Game.

The UNC football program, fresh off of clinching the ACC Coastal Division, heads back home to face off against Georgia Tech this weekend.

The Tar Heels sit at No. 13 in the AP Poll and No. 13 in the College Football Playoff rankings.

Drake Maye and Josh Downs continue to be one of the most effective duos in the ACC and the entire country and will look to do the same once again on Saturday.

Georgia Tech comes into this matchup a few weeks removed from firing its head coach Geoff Collins and currently sit at 4-6 on the season.

North Carolina’s offense continues to be unstoppable on most drives each and every game, and with a struggling defense for the Yellow Jackets, another successful offensive game is likely.

Here are the keys to the game for the UNC offense.

UNC football duo racks up more ACC weekly honors

The UNC football duo of Drake Maye and Josh Downs racked up more ACC weekly honors this week following the win over Wake Forest.

Coming off of its win over Wake Forest on Saturday, UNC football star duo [autotag]Drake Maye[/autotag] and [autotag]Josh Downs[/autotag] earned more weekly ACC honors.

Maye won the ACC Quarterback of the Week while Downs earned Wide Receiver of the Week honors.

This is Maye’s sixth time earning the award and this is Down’s second time winning the award this season. Downs has earned this honor five times in his career, however.

Maye continued his terrific play this season, throwing for 448 yards and three touchdowns. It was a career-high in passing yards for the redshirt freshman. He also added 71 yards on the ground and an additional touchdown.

This weekly honor is just another tool to add to his belt when discussing a potential Heisman candidacy, which numerous people are talking about nationally.
