Dragon Age 4’s senior creative director leaves Bioware

Matt Goldman leaves after a 20-year-long career at the studio.

Matt Goldman, senior creative director on Dragon Age 4, has left Bioware.

Kotaku  reportedly got ahold of an internal Bioware email from studio GM Gary McKay that adds some context to Goldman’s departure.

“I’m writing to inform you all that Matt Goldman is leaving BioWare. We have mutually agreed to part ways, and his last day is today,” McKay said  via Kotaku. “We understand that Matt’s departure has an impact on you, as well as [Dragon Age 4’s] development. Rest assured our commitment to a high-quality Dragon Age  game has not waivered, and we will not ship a game that is not up to BioWare’s standards.”

McKay goes on to state that Bioware leadership, along with EA’s executive team, are confident that Dragon Age 4’s  development team will be able to carry on without Goldman just fine.

Goldman had been with Bioware since 1998, having worked on classics like Baldur’s Gate II  and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic  to modern hits like Dragon Age: Origins  and Dragon Age: Inquisition. He left the company briefly during that period to work on Halo Wars  at Ensemble, then came back in 2017 where he took over as Dragon Age 4’s  senior creative director.

Goldman’s departure is, well, kind of shocking! Especially since Dragon Age 4’s  continues to languish in development. Bioware fans at least have a Mass Effect  TV show to look forward to, hopefully.

Bioware teases the future of ‘Mass Effect’

The Geth might be coming back to Mass Effect.

Bioware was kind enough to share a poster from the next Mass Effect  game on Sunday.

For N7 Day, an annual celebration of all things Mass Effect, Bioware chose to tease the fans with some artwork from the next game. There’s no official title for this game yet, as every teaser states “Mass Effect Will Continue” — fun tagline, but it doesn’t give us much to go on, eh? Oh, and Liara T’Soni is in it! So that’s at least one familiar face from the original Mass Effect  trilogy. Now, it looks like the Geth, a robotic species in the Mass Effect  universe, is also making a comeback.

Check out the new Mass Effect  teaser poster for yourself below.

The crater outline in this poster resembles a Geth, especially the flashlight-like eye in the center. Several eagle-eyed fans have even made side-by-side comparisons to show how similar the chasm is to members of the Geth species. It’s a safe bet that this was intentional on Bioware’s part!

Bioware can likely only do small teasers like this for the next Mass Effect, as the studio is still knee-deep in development for Dragon Age 4. Actor Yuri Lowenthal is hopeful that his character Sandal will be back for that one

Yuri Lowenthal would ‘100%’ come back to play Sandal in ‘Dragon Age 4’, but it seems unlikely

The actor behind Dragon Age: Origins’ Sandal says he would love to reprise the role, but it looks unlikely.

Dragon Age: Origins is still the best Dragon Age game, that’s just science, logic, and reason. And you have to hand at least some credit to Sandal Feddic for how memorable it is. On the surface, Sandal is a simple comic relief character who can only say “enchantment”, but BioWare gave him more depth than the writers probably had to, cementing him as one of the best side characters in video games.

Some of that is also down to Yuri Lowenthal’s performance, the actor best known for his role as Peter Parker in Marvel’s Spider-Man. We recently got the chance to talk with Lowenthal about his work, and we have a bigger interview piece coming in the next few days, but we didn’t want to keep the Dragon Age fanbase waiting on this one. So, would Lowenthal reprise his role as Sandal if he was asked to come back for the upcoming Dragon Age 4

“100%, I love that little guy,” he tells USA Today. “I love him so much.”

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem likely. “I don’t think I’m speaking out of turn, but as far as I know there’s no Sandal in Dragon Age 4,” Lowenthal explains. “If there is then it wasn’t played by me because I would have loved to have come back. I’m excited to hear about the new Dragon Age because Dragon Age is awesome, but I love Sandal.

“Here’s what makes Sandal great. He could have just been a terrible joke, and he wasn’t. They gave him some turns that nobody saw coming. He’s a right badass. So God bless you, Sandal, wherever you may be. And a hearty enchantment to you.”

BioWare hasn’t announced a release date for Dragon Age 4 just yet, but it’s reportedly been in development since 2015
