Bears and Browns swap picks in 2025 NFL Draft for DL Chris Williams

The Bears traded a 2025 pick they acquired in an earlier trade for a player no longer in the NFL

The rate of 2025 NFL Draft picks being dealt is flowing almost daily as teams approach the NFL roster cutdown deadline. One of the latest involves the Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns swapping some 2025 picks.

The trade

Cleveland trades defensive tackle Chris Williams and a seventh-round pick in 2025 to the Bears. Chicago sends back a sixth-round pick in 2025.

Williams was unlikely to make the Browns deep defensive tackle rotation. He has a better shot in Chicago, which lacks his style of veteran depth on the defensive interior.

That sixth-rounder from Chicago is not the Bears’ own pick, however. Chicago sent Cleveland the sixth-round pick in 2025 the Bears acquired from Miami for wideout Chase Claypool last year. Claypool recently got released by the Dolphins.

Commanders and Eagles swap some 2025 draft picks for former 1st rounder Jahan Dotson

The Commanders traded 2022 1st round WR Jahan Dotson to the Eagles for some 2025 draft picks

The Washington Commanders have thrown in the towel on the team’s first-round pick from the 2022 NFL Draft. Washington has traded former Penn State wideout Jahan Dotson away after two uneven but modestly productive seasons.

One team’s misfit becomes another’s hopeful missing puzzle piece. In this case, it’s Washington’s own NFC East rival, the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles traded some 2025 draft capital to the Commanders to acquire Dotson.

The trade details, from Eagles Wire’s Glenn Erby:

Washington is sending Dotson and a fifth-round pick to the Eagles in exchange for a 2025 third-round pick and two seventh-round picks.

Dotson is expected to compete quickly for the No. 3 wideout role with his new team. He had a decent start to his Commanders career, but 2024 was his third offensive system, third position coach and well beyond the third quarterback Dotson worked with in Washington. He wound up catching 84 passes for 1,041 yards and 11 TDs in two seasons.

The Eagles do still have a third-round pick in 2025 even after the trade. Philadelphia owns the Miami Dolphins’ third-rounder from a 2024 draft-day trade, which Miami dealt to move up and take RB Jaylen Wright.

The Rams tried very hard to trade up for Brock Bowers in the 2024 NFL Draft

The L.A. Rams tried repeatedly to trade up on draft day for Georgia TE Brock Bowers, but the New York Jets wouldn’t bite on the offers

The New York Jets traded back one spot in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. New York slid back to No. 11 from 10 to allow the Minnesota Vikings to move up and snag Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy.

It turns out, the Jets could have kept on moving back.

The Los Angeles Rams fervently approached the Jets about a potential deal so L.A. could move way up from No. 19 to No. 11. The Rams offered the Jets No. 19, a second-round pick and a third-round pick for No. 11 and a sixth-rounder, as shown in the docuseries “The Pick is In.”

The Rams really wanted Georgia TE Brock Bowers, having earlier tried to move up to 10. In that instance, the Vikings made a better offer. The Jets ultimately stayed put at 11 after sliding back a spot and selected Penn State OT Olu Fashanu instead of accepting the deal.

Bowers wound up going No. 13 overall to the Las Vegas Raiders, while the Rams picked Florida State EDGE Jared Verse at 19.

Report indicates the Vikings tried to trade up to No. 3 overall with the Patriots

The Vikings made a huge offer to the Patriots but New England held onto No. 3 and took Drake Maye

The Minnesota Vikings ultimately landed their new franchise quarterback in J.J. McCarthy with the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft. However, a detailed report out of New England indicates the Vikings tried to move up mich higher to acquire the quarterback of their choosing.

Mike Reiss of ESPN notes the Vikings made quite the offer to move up from No. 11 to No. 3. Per Reiss, Minnesota offered three first-round picks: No. 11, No. 23 and the Vikings’ first-rounder in 2025. In return, New England would send No. 3 overall and a pair of unspecified middle-round picks.

The Patriots refused to trade out of the pick, desiring to land Drake Maye and knowing they would not be able to draft the North Carolina quarterback if they moved off the third pick. New England also rebuffed an offer from the New York Giants that involved the No. 6 overall pick.

The Vikings later traded up with the New York Jets from 11 to 10 to select McCarthy.

The Bears traded to get back their own, previously traded draft pick

The Chicago Bears traded the 144th pick to the Bills, then traded with Buffalo to bring it back to Chicago

Day 3 of the NFL draft is always chock full of trades. More than half the picks in the fourth through seventh rounds every year wind up being traded at some point during the path to the end of the draft.

Sometimes, those trades can look a little funny. That’s the case with the 144th pick of the 2024 NFL draft. It’s a pick the Chicago Bears traded…and then traded once again to reacquire.

Back in March, the Bears sent the No. 144 pick to the Buffalo Bills for center Ryan Bates. On Saturday in Detroit, the Bears and Bills made another trade that sent the pick back to Chicago. The Bears sent a 2025 fourth-round pick to Buffalo to reacquire that fifth-round pick.

With the 144th pick that they traded away and then traded for, the Beas selected Kansas EDGE Austin Booker.

The first trade of the 2024 NFL draft came quite a bit later in the first round than many expected. After the first nine picks were all made by the assigned teams, there was finally some trade action for the No. 10 overall pick.

The New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings agreed to a deal that allowed the Vikings to move up one spot to select Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy. Minnesota sent No. 11, No. 129 and No. 157 to the Jets for No. 10 and No. 203 overall.

The trade value chart says this is almost a perfect match of a deal between the two teams.

The 2024 NFL draft trade value chart

The 2024 NFL draft trade value chart, based off the Rich Hill model

With all the uncertainty of what will happen during the 2024 NFL draft in Detroit this week, one thing is surefire: There will be trades. Lots of them in every round, more than likely.

NFL teams negotiate trade terms based on draft value charts. There are several different ones, with the most famous being the “Jimmy Johnson” chart from Johnson’s time running the Dallas Cowboys. That was back in the 1990s, however, and the changes in the game, the salary impact of rookie contracts and other factors have left Johnson’s value calculations somewhat antiquated.

Here at Draft Wire and the other USA TODAY Wire network sites, we lean heavily on the draft value chart developed more recently. Known as the Rich Hill model, it stems from a modernizing of Johnson’s charts initially undertaken by Rich Hill of Pats Pulpit several years ago.

The values for each pick on the Hill model are here on one handy chart.

The values are more guidelines than they are strictly adhered to by teams. Player supply/demand at positions, relative state of the roster for the teams involved, and simple carnal desire to get a deal done can all create variances from steadfastly sticking to the values here. But the chart is a good reference point for seeing how realistic a trade proposal might be.

Giants send two 2024 draft picks to the Panthers for EDGE Brian Burns

Giants send two 2024 draft picks to the Panthers for EDGE Brian Burns, shaking up the draft order for both teams

Just when you thought it was safe to start writing a new multi-round mock draft for 2024, the free agency negotiating period began. Monday also featured some trades, and one of them significantly altered the pick selection status for the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers.

On Monday, the Panthers and Giants agreed to a trade involving two-time Pro Bowl EDGE Brian Burns. Carolina dealt Burns to the Giants for two picks in the 2024 NFL draft, sending one back in return.

The deal

The Panthers acquire a 2024 second-round pick, No. 39 overall, a fifth-round pick in 2024 (No. 166) and a 2025 fifth-round pick from New York in exchange for Brian Burns and a 2024 fifth-round pick (No. 141).

New York is also paying Burns a new five-year contract with up to $150 million, with $87.5 million guaranteed at signing, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.

Adding No. 39 gives the Panthers two of the first seven picks of the second round, along with No. 33. Carolina does not have a first-round pick. Without Burns, they also now have a massive hole at EDGE to fill.

The Texans draft trade detail gamble paid off

The Houston Texans made a savvy gamble in the details of their 2023 draft-day trade with the Arizona Cardinals

Back in the 2023 NFL draft, the Houston Texans made a trade with the Arizona Cardinals. One of the fine-print details in the blockbuster trade turned out to be a savvy gamble on his own team by Texans GM Nick Caserio.

In the trade, the Texans moved up to No. 3 overall to select EDGE Will Anderson. The haul for the Cardinals was significant:

  • No. 12 overall (which Arizona also traded)
  • No. 33 overall (which Arizona also traded)
  • 2024 1st-round pick
  • 2024 3rd-round pick

It’s that 2024 first-rounder where Caserio made out. At the time of the trade, the Texans held two first-round picks for the 2024 draft. In addition to their own, they also held the Cleveland Browns’ top selection as a result of the Deshaun Watson trade. The Cardinals had some trade leverage in choosing which of those Texans’ picks they wanted in the trade.

Caserio pushed to keep the Browns’ pick and dealt away Houston’s own. At the time, it looked like a poor decision. While the Browns weren’t expected to be great, they were widely perceived as having a higher ceiling in 2023 than the Texans. With Houston coming off a 3-13-1 season in 2022 and with questions at several key positions, it was hard to blame anyone for thinking the Texans were destined for another top-5 overall pick.

A funny thing happened on the way to the podium for the Cardinals. The Texans wound up having a much more successful season than anticipated. Houston won the AFC South with a 10-7 record, with Anderson being a key reason why the Texans defense got better. The Texans then beat the Browns, who finished 11-6, in the first round of the playoffs.

The Browns earned the No. 23 overall pick. Houston earned the No. 27 slot after losing to the Ravens on Saturday. The Texans get Cleveland’s slot at 23, while Arizona, which finished 4-13, gets Houston’s own pick at 27. The gamble on the draft detail saved the Texans four slots.

Cardinals offer a revealing look behind the scenes at draft trades coming together

The Cardinals “Flight Plan” documentary offers a revealing look behind the scenes at how draft trades come together

The Arizona Cardinals were very active in the trade market during the 2023 NFL draft. New GM Monti Ossenfort pulled off two separate trades involving top-10 picks while on the clock in April.

In an exceptional edition of the Cardinals’ in-house media production called “Cardinals Flight Plan” we get to see how Ossenfort executed the trades.

First, he dealt No. 3 overall to the Houston Texans in exchange for No. 12, No. 33 and a first-round and third-round pick in 2024, also sending No. 105 to Houston. But that comes after a rapid series of negotiations over the exact compensation that occur while the Cardinals are on the clock.

After that thrill ride, Ossenfort and his staff don’t have much time to catch their collective breath. They engineered another trade, packaging the No. 12 pick they just acquired to move up to No. 6 in a trade with the Detroit Lions.

Ossenfort talks with all four teams picking between No. 5 and No. 8 before agreeing to the deal with Detroit. It’s an indication of just how strongly the Cardinals valued Ohio State offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr., who they elected at No. 6 after the trade.

The entire program is an exceptional behind-the-scenes look at how a draft plays out in real-time.
