2023 NFL draft: Updated 1st-round order after Week 8

See what the first-round order would look like if the 2023 NFL draft took place after Week 8

The halfway point of the 2022 NFL season has nearly arrived, and with Tuesday’s trade deadline in the books, it’s becoming even more clear which teams are still trying to make a playoff push, and which ones are already planning for the future.

As we look ahead to the second half of the year, here’s what the first-round order would look like if the 2023 NFL draft took place after Week 8 (via Tankathon):

2023 NFL draft: Updated 1st-round order after Week 7

Here’s what the first-round order would look like if the 2023 NFL draft took place after Week 7

We’re nearing the halfway point of the 2022 NFL season, and that means a clearer picture is starting to form at the top of next year’s draft order.

There’s a new No. 1 in the race for the top pick in the 2023 NFL draft, as the Detroit Lions took the lead thanks to the Carolina Panthers’ upset win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Three of the top six picks in the current order (and four of the top 11) were acquired via trade, as teams that traded away their top selection haven’t exactly been lighting the world on fire so far this season.

As we head into Week 8, here’s what the first-round order would look like if next year’s draft took place after Week 7 action (via Tankathon):

*NOTE: The Miami Dolphins forfeited their first-round pick in next year’s draft as a result of the NFL’s investigation into tampering violations.

Where the Vikings are currently selected to pick in the 2023 NFL Draft

The updated draft order reflects the Vikings’ success this season

The Minnesota Vikings currently sit at 5-1 which is a truly excellent start to the Kevin O’Connell and Kwesi Adofo-Mensah era.

It’s honestly way too early to be thinking about the NFL draft with the success of the Vikings currently, but it is something to monitor out of the corner of your eye throughout the season.

Per Tankathon, the Vikings currently possess five picks before compensatory selections are announced, owning their first, second, third, fifth and sixth round picks.

After the Vikings beat the Dolphins on Sunday, they dropped down to 30th in the draft order which is both a blessing and a curse. Here is the updated draft order.

  1. Carolina Panthers
  2. Las Vegas Raiders
  3. Detroit Lions

After trading quarterback Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos, the Seattle Seahawks will be entering the 2022 NFL draft with eight picks to play with, including No. 9 overall in the first round.

“It’s going to be different,” general manager John Schneider said last week. “We haven’t experienced it since the first year we were here, we had the two firstround draft picks. So there’s a lot of planning, a lot of thoughts that go through your head, a lot of different scenarios. We may pick at nine, we may not, we don’t know yet.

“We’re going to do whatever we can to help this football team as much as we possibly can.”

Assuming nothing changes over the next couple of days, here’s where the Seahawks are slated to pick entering the 2022 NFL draft.

No. 9 overall

Round 2

No. 40 overall
No. 41 overall

Round 3

Turns out the Broncos have 9 draft picks, not 8

The NFL initially said the Broncos have eight draft picks. It turns out Denver actually has nine picks!

When the league announced the order for the 2022 NFL draft last month, they officially said the Denver Broncos had eight picks.

After that, Broncos general manager George Paton said on more than one occasion that the team had nine picks. Broncos Wire assumed Paton was just misspeaking. In hindsight, that was a silly assumption given how diligent Paton is in the draft process.

It turns out Denver does have nine picks as Paton said. Ryan O’Halloran of The Denver Post and Mike Klis of 9News both reported Thursday that the Broncos confirmed with the NFL that they do have a seventh-round pick from the Detroit Lions, acquired in the Trinity Benson trade last year.

So here’s an updated look at the team’s picks this year.

Denver Broncos 2022 NFL draft picks

Round 2: 64 (via Los Angeles Rams)
Round 3: 75 (own pick)
Round 3: 96 (via Los Angeles Rams)
Round 4: 115 (own pick)
Round 4: 116 (via Seattle Seahawks)
Round 5: 152 (own pick)
Round 6: 206 (via Philadelphia Eagles)
Round 7: 232 (own pick)
Round 7: 234 (via Detroit Lions)

Denver traded its first- and second-round picks to the Seahawks as part of the Russell Wilson trade (and got a fourth-round pick back).

The Broncos acquired second- and third-round picks from the Rams in the Von Miller trade last year. Denver also got a sixth-round pick from the Eagles in exchange for cornerback Kary Vincent Jr. (a former seventh-round draft pick).

The 2022 NFL draft will be held in Las Vegas from April 28-30.
