SEC title game’s Dr. Pepper tuition toss was settled with a tiebreaker rule, and fans were so upset

What good are rules when they aren’t good?

In competition, rules are important. They are implemented to serve as guidelines and keep things fair. But when the rules stink, it’s hard to be OK with the results that follow, which is exactly what happened during a break from Saturday’s SEC championship game.

Of course, we’re not talking about the actual football game itself. Rather, Dr. Pepper’s tuition toss that occurred during.

For those unfamiliar, the tuition competition is when two students take the field to compete for a chance to win college tuition money. They throw as many footballs as they can into a bin, and whoever has the most when the clock hits zero wins.

Saturday’s toss started off being fun but had an underwhelming conclusion.

The original football toss-off ended in a tie, thus leading to an overtime round where, again, a tie. But instead of going to another overtime, a strange and concise rule explanation left one student as the prize winner and the other empty-handed.

That’s it, Dr. Pepper? No further explanation? What even was the tiebreaker that was said to have taken place the day prior?

As you would imagine, the vague explanation and very rapid conclusion did not sit well with college football fans.

UPDATE: They both won!

How many NIL deals does Bryce Young have? Alabama quarterback answers the Fansville question

We asked the Heisman winner about his NIL deals.

One of the best moments from Bryce Young’s debut in Season 5 of Dr. Pepper’s Fansville is when the sheriff (played by Brian Bosworth) gets on his walkie-talkie to ask “how many NIL deals does Bryce Young have?”

The comment was in response to Young’s ad within the ad. He plays himself in Fansville. So, fittingly, he was selling something: foam fingers for Fansville Foam Finger Warehouse.

Bosworth’s fictional reaction was simply art imitating life, because it’s a question people in the real world want to know. Exactly how many NIL deals does the Heisman-winning quarterback for the University of Alabama have? It’s apparently too many for Young to keep up with.

“I don’t know a specific number,” Young said in an interview with For The Win about his Dr. Pepper partnership. “There’s hoops and stuff you gotta jump through just talking about business things. But I’ve been blessed to have the opportunities that I have, to have the partnerships that I’ve been able to have.”

OK, so he didn’t exactly clear that up. Last summer, before Young had even taken a snap as starting quarterback, ESPN reported him as having more than $800,000 in NIL deals. College and recruiting site On3 has his valuation at $3.2 million, which ranks fourth on their NIL 100 list.

These opportunities have turned the football player into a walking salesman, and the new Dr. Pepper deal allows him to add ‘actor’ to his resume. Young said being able to partner with a national brand was a no-brainer, adding that he found the Fansville campaign intriguing even as a spectator. Now, being a part of it, he admits his acting still needs a little work.

“I didn’t have any acting lessons, but I definitely felt like I should have,” Young said. “There was a great cast, great crew. So, just being able to watch them, it was a little intimidating. But I had fun with it.”

Young isn’t letting off the field stuff distract from the football, though. He’s adamant that winning is his biggest priority at Alabama. That doesn’t mean he isn’t grateful for the opportunities that NIL has afforded him. But he understands they don’t come without success on the field.

“For me, all the glory goes to God. I have a great team around me that has helped me strategically have partners and have people around me. But that’s one aspect of my life that is great and I’m super grateful for,” Young said. “But at the end of the day for me, what’s most important is being an athlete and being a student. Those are the things that dictate what I’m doing, and those are the things that take up my day and my time and that’s what all the NIL and business stuff works around.”

Bryce Young is chasing team success at Alabama, and that might just land him another Heisman trophy

Alabama’s quarterback isn’t in it for individual accolades.

Bryce Young doesn’t gamble, at all. He makes that perfectly clear.

Alabama’s star quarterback only deals in certainty, things within his control. If it involves chance or luck, he’s probably not interested.

“If I’m being 100% honest, I’m not a bettor at all,” Young said in a recent interview with For The Win about his new NIL deal with Dr. Pepper. “Maybe the most I’ve bet is some push-ups on who could shoot a piece of paper into a trash can.”

For those who do care about matters of chance – like, say, Young’s odds to win the Heisman trophy for a second straight year – this is the best news possible. It’s how he won the first award.

What Young can control is how he prepares and how he performs on game day to help his team win. With that as his only goal last year, the individual success came as a result.

“It’s a huge honor. It’s something as a little kid you always look at and admire. But honestly it wasn’t a goal for me going into the season at all,” Young said of winning the 2021 Heisman award. “For me, the goal is just to win as a team and accomplish our team goals. I’m not someone who sets individual goals for myself as far as performance goes.

“One of the things about Alabama that makes it so great is when your team is able to be successful, a lot of times that translates into individual success. And I know that, I trust that process.”

Trusting the process allowed Young to lead Alabama all the way to the College Football Playoff national championship game in January. Sure enough, his role in that success helped him land the Heisman trophy as the most outstanding player in college football. Additionally, it allowed him to add to his portfolio of NIL deals – the latest with Dr. Pepper includes a spot in its new season of the parody college football drama, Fansville.

Now, Young will have an opportunity to become just the second player ever to win the Heisman more than once. Despite his standing as the reigning winner, however, he’s not the betting favorite; that title belongs to Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud, who had +210 odds at Tipcio Sportsbook. Young is second at +380.

Ranked No. 2 in the country, Stroud’s Buckeyes have national title hopes too. But unlike Alabama, they’ll be motivated by missing the CFP completely in 2021. If he’s as focused on team success as Young, it’ll make for quite the tug-of-war between national title hopefuls led by Heisman candidates.

Top-ranked Alabama isn’t without fire, though. The Tide fell short of their goal last season, losing to SEC rival Georgia in the title game. Getting there and finishing the job is Young’s biggest goal going into the new season, which Alabama kicks off Saturday against Utah State. That gives him as good a shot at winning another Heisman as any.

“It’s not really something that I think about,” Young said. “It’s a huge honor and huge blessing to receive the award that I did. I definitely don’t take it lightly. But at the same time, I’m just focused on the team goals. That’s what my approach has been since I’ve been at the University.”

Bryce Young adds Dr. Pepper NIL deal, featured in hilarious commercial

Bryce Young strikes NIL gold again with Dr. Pepper

The number of NIL deals Crimson Tide quarterback and reigning Heisman trophy winner, Bryce Young, has earned is staggering. Yet, he continues to add to the list. Dr. Pepper released a hilarious commercial that features Young waving a foam finger while former Oklahoma great, Brian Bosworth, comes onto the camera to say, “How many NIL deals does Bryce Young have?” Bryce Young will continue to be featured in their Fansville commercials and episodes, replacing Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei.

On top of the NIL deals, Dr. Pepper also jokes about how rapidly college football is changing and how conference realignment makes no geographic sense.

As for Young, his last NIL valuation came in at $3.1 million in late May, however, I would imagine that number has increased considerably over the course of this summer, with Dr. Pepper being most noticeable.

Dr. Pepper Senior Vice President, John Alvardo, spoke highly of Young saying, “Not only is Bryce one of the greatest collegiate athletes in college sports, but he fits perfectly in the Dr Pepper family. As a fan of the brand, he emulates what the brand stands for and represents our message around everyone being ‘deserving’ of a Dr Pepper.”
