On Juneteenth, Stephen Curry joined Dr. Clarence B. Jones and Jennifer Azzi for the University of San Francisco’s “The Dream Marches On” conversation. In an hourlong virtual Zoom webinar, the trio spoke about the Black Lives Matter movement, social justice, activism and the power of education.
Dr. Jones, a close friend and attorney of Dr. Martin Luther King, helped draft the iconic “I Have a Dream” speech King delivered during the 1963 March on Washington. Dr. Jones currently serves as Director of USF’s Institute for Nonviolence and Social Justice.
The conversation featured Dr. Jones sharing memories from his experience along with Curry and Azzi’s reactions to the protests in the wake of the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor.
Through his family foundation Eat. Learn. Play., Curry pledged to match every dollar raised for USF’s Institute for Nonviolence and Social Justice during the month of June, up to $50,000. Jones thanked Curry for his work off the court and for the donation made to USF’s institute.
I want the record to reflect that over and above the initial personal admiration I developed when I met him some time ago — Steph, I’m speaking to you and your wife now you’re just here, you’re representing — I’m speaking to both of you. I’m saying, with the most profound gratitude and admiration for the support you’ve not only given to Oakland, but you’ve given specifically to the institute which I try to head as carrying on the legacy of Dr. King. So as I said, I want the record to publicly reflect, and everybody that hear me publicly thank you from the bottom of my heart.
