Bears fans are reliving the horror of Cody Parkey’s infamous ‘double doink’ on 3rd anniversary

The NFL world is having a laugh at the expense of Bears fans on the third anniversary of Cody Parkey’s infamous “double doink.”

It’s hard to believe it’s been three years since Cody Parkey’s infamous “double doink” missed field goal forever changed the trajectory of the Bears franchise under head coach Matt Nagy.

The Bears hosted the Eagles in a wild-card playoff game on Jan. 6, 2019, which was decided by a 43-yard field goal attempt by Parkey as time expired. And it’s haunted the Bears ever since.

We all know what happened. Parkey’s kick doinked not once, but twice, off the crossbar and didn’t go in, cutting Chicago’s playoff journey far too short.

Bears fans would like to forget. But they’ve yet to been given the chance as Parkey’s infamous “double doink” will forever be ingrained into the minds of the NFL world. (Much like I’m reminding you now.)

But the drama didn’t stop there. It was Parkey’s appearance on NBC’s “Today Show” the day after his miss that sealed his fate with the Bears. Nagy described Parkey’s actions as “me not we” move, and he was released by the Bears on March 13.

As the NFL world has a laugh at the expense of Bears fans on the third anniversary of the “double doink,” here’s how Bears fans are feeling:

Watch: Cody Parkey doinks PAT on Sunday Night Football

Cody Parkey somehow found the upright from 48 on a PAT. Doink!

It must be something about NBC that haunts Cody Parkey.

The kicker who double-doinked on the Peacock in a playoff game when a Chicago Bear had bad luck on Sunday.

Jarvis Landry scored a touchdown but was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Giants head coach Joe Judge took the penalty on the PAT, forcing Parkey to try from 48, and somehow he managed to hit the upright, again.

Doink.

Parkey for the Bears against the Eagles. Doinks for the memories.

For once, a Cody Parkey doink goes his way

Cody Parkey has garnered a reputation for doinking the football, and he was at it again with the Browns…with a different, winning result.

It would be nice not to have to continue to talk about Cody Parkey, but he continues to do things that bear the very thing.

The former Chicago Bears kicker has garnered a reputation around the league following his infamous double doink, which cost the Bears a postseason victory back in 2018.

But even before the double doink, Parkey was making a name for himself in doinking the football off the upright. Parkey hit the upright four — yes, four — times on two missed field goals and two missed extra points in a regular-season win against the Detroit Lions on Nov. 11, 2018.

Parkey, who has found a new opportunity with the Cleveland Browns, was at it again on Sunday. Parkey’s 46-yard field goal attempt doinked off the left upright before bouncing in to extend the Browns’ lead to 32-23 with 0:21 left.

It was the first time one of Parkey’s doinks benefitted him, which makes it all the more frustrating considering the pain that came with the doink heard ’round the world.

Parkey’s stint in Cleveland has been encouraging at the start, where he’s connected on all four field goals and all 14 extra points through four games with the Browns this season.

Cody Parkey is already doinking field goals, and it’s only warm-ups

Former Bears kicker Cody Parkey has lived to kick another day in the NFL, but he might not last the weekend with the Browns.

Former Bears kicker Cody Parkey has lived to kick another day in the NFL after signing with the Cleveland Browns this week. But Parkey might not last the weekend if pregame warm-ups are any indication of what’s to come.

Yes, Cody Parkey will be on your television for your viewing displeasure on Thursday Night Football as the Browns face the Cincinnati Bengals in the  Battle of Ohio.

During pregame warm-ups, Parkey was spotted doinking a couple of field goals off the upright, something Bears fans still have nightmares about. Parkey doinked field goals from 37 yards and 46 yards. Hey, it could be worse. It could’ve been 43 yards.

The Browns just waived Austin Seibert after he missed an extra point and field goal in last Sunday’s 38-6 loss against the Baltimore Ravens.

It’s good to know that teams other than the Bears — like the Browns and the Tennessee Titans — are having kicker woes of their own.

Although, to be fair, new Bears kicker Cairo Santos was perfect in his 2020 debut. Santos has been filling in for Eddy Pineiro, who was placed on injured reserve after suffering a groin injury. Pineiro isn’t eligible to return until Week 4. But if Santos continues to be a reliable kicker for the Bears, then it could cause a dilemma for Matt Nagy and the Bears.

Former Bears kicker Cody Parkey lives to kick another day in NFL

Get ready, Bears fans. A familiar face that might still haunts your dreams is getting another shot in the NFL as he joins the Browns.

Get ready, Bears fans. A familiar face that might still haunts your dreams is getting another shot in the NFL.

The Cleveland Browns are signing former Bears kicker Cody Parkey to their active roster, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. And get ready to see Parkey’s face on your television, because he’ll be kicking on Thursday Night Football as the Browns host the Cincinnati Bengals to kick-off Week 2.

The Browns are bringing in Parkey to replace starter Austin Seibert, who they waived on Monday following a missed field goal and extra point in Sunday’s 38-6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Obviously, Parkey needs no introduction for his infamous double-doink missed 43-yard field goal that cost the Bears a wild card win. Chicago released him that following offseason.

Parkey got one opportunity in 2019, where he kicked in three games for the Tennessee Titans. Parkey completed all three of his field goal attempts, including one from 50-plus yards.

Allen Robinson still isn’t over the double doink heard round the world

Bears fans, WR Allen Robinson feels your pain two years after Cody Parkey’s infamous double-doink missed field goal.

In a century of Chicago Bears football, there’s been a lot of heartbreak that fans have experienced over the years. But there’s nothing quite as painful as the double doink heard ’round the NFL world.

Even two years later, the mere thought of a football doinking off the upright or the mention of “double doink” brings those emotions flooding back. And fans aren’t alone in their heartache.

Sports Center asked people to name a sports moment that made them feel like the infamous Michael Jordan meme. And Bears receiver Allen Robinson couldn’t even finish his response…although it’s easy to infer “the double” refers to Cody Parkey’s infamous “double doink” missed field goal in the final seconds of Chicago’s wild card playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in January 2019.

While it’s easier to laugh it off now, it still hurts thinking about what could’ve been had Parkey connected on that 43-yard field goal. The narrative surrounding quarterback Mitchell Trubisky would’ve been completely different. The Bears would’ve gotten stud safety Eddie Jackson back from injury in time for the divisional playoffs. And perhaps the Bears could’ve made a run for the Super Bowl.

Alas, we’ll never know. But it’s the not knowing that makes it difficult every time the “double doink” is mentioned.

It’s been 1 year since Cody Parkey’s double doink heard ’round the world

It’s been 1 year since Cody Parkey’s infamous “Double Doink” dashed the Bears’ playoff run and set into motion a bizarre kicker competition.

Bears fans would certainly like to forget the final play of last year’s wild-card playoff game, where Chicago hosted Philadelphia in a contest that was decided by a 43-yard field goal that has haunted the Bears ever since.

Sure, Bears fans would like to forget. But they’ve yet to been given the chance as Cody Parkey’s infamous “double doink” will forever be ingrained into the minds of the NFL world. (Much like I’m reminding you now.)

It’s hard to believe that it’s been one year. One year since Parkey’s missed field goal ended the Bears’ playoff run. A missed field goal that led to a circus-like kicker competition that ended with rookie Eddy Pineiro as the last kicker standing. A kick that ended a magical season that feels so far away removed after a disappointing 8-8 season.

Warning: Some viewers may find the following video disturbing. Viewer discretion is advised.

But it was Parkey’s infamous “Today Show” appearance the day after his double doink missed field goal that sealed his fate with the Bears. Matt Nagy described Parkey’s actions as “me not we,” and he was released by the Bears on March 13.

While the Bears look like they’ve found their kicker in Eddy Pineiro — at least for now — it doesn’t take away from the sting still still comes at the mention of a “double doink.”

Finally, a double-doink goes the Bears’ way

For once, the Bears were on the right side of a double-doink — this one by Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker.

Nothing has gone right for the Chicago Bears against the Kansas City Chiefs. But there was one thing that did in the fourth quarter — something that brings back bad memories for Bears fans.

Following a Patrick Mahomes touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker stepped up to kick what should’ve been an easy extra point. Instead, Butker’s kick bounced off the goal posts twice — a double doink — before falling incomplete.

There must be something about that North endzone at Soldier Field, because it also happened to be the spot of Cody Parkey’s infamous double-doink in last year’s Wild Card playoffs.

Bears fans will remember, not-so-fondly, Parkey’s missed 43-yard field goal as time expired. In fact, Matt Nagy refused to let his team forget it, as he crafted an entire kicking competition around it.

Parkey’s double-doink is still fresh in the minds of Bears’ fans, and it doesn’t help with Chicago eliminated from playoff contention and headed into an offseason with a slew of questions.

In a game where nothing seemed to go right for the Bears, they finally got the better end of a double doink.

The Bears trail the Chiefs 23-3 late in the fourth quarter.
