“You’re aware of the shortage of tests, and you have that moral dilemma as a person,” she said. “[But] obviously our job requirement is such that we are on airplanes where we hear people cough and sneeze. We are in incredibly close proximity. The month prior to that game on March 11 happened to be a particularly hectic one for me travel-wise. “I was not spending very much time in my apartment here in the Philly area. So, I just thought, I started to believe, even though my symptoms did not seem to line up with the typical symptoms, I believed, given the nature of my profession, the number of people I encounter, that I did in fact have exposure to the virus.”

ESPN NBA analyst Doris Burke has received a positive diagnosis for COVID-19 but says she is now symptom-free more than two weeks after her initial concerns of an illness. Burke addressed her diagnosis with ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Friday’s episode of The Woj Pod. She told Wojnarowski she was tested March 17 but did not find out until eight days later, on Wednesday, that she had a positive diagnosis.

Burke said she felt her first symptom March 11 — the same day the NBA shut down play after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the coronavirus. Burke was working the Denver Nuggets-Dallas Mavericks game for ESPN, and she said she noticed feeling tired during lunch with her broadcast crew. “Man, I am so tired right now and my head is pounding,” Burke recalled thinking. “And looking back, those were my symptoms. And we’ve heard so much about shortness of breath, fever, tightness in your chest, chills, body aches, etc. … That really was my primary symptom throughout this was this extraordinary fatigue.”

Doris Burke shares her experience after testing positive for coronavirus

Doris Burke says she’s doing well after testing positive for coronavirus.

ESPN NBA analyst Doris Burke is recovering and feeling well after testing positive for COVID-19 earlier this month. Burke explained her experience during an appearance on The Woj Pod with Adrian Wojnarowski.

Burke said she noticed her first symptoms on March 11th, hours before a Nuggets-Mavericks game that she called. Burke said that she felt incredibly tired, and that her head was pounding, but that she felt better after having an aspirin. She called the game, and the next day experienced another headache and still felt fatigued.

“By the time Saturday the 14th hit Adrian, I was so tired that I… if I tried to get out of bed from Saturday, the 14th, through Tuesday, March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day, I kid you not I could not be out of bed for more than five minutes without needing to go back to bed and lay down.”

Burke said she went to a hospital in Philadelphia to get tested, and finally got the results eight days later. Burke says she’s now feeling well. She called everyone she had come in contact with during her travels to alert them of her status, and said she felt “heartsick” over the possibility that she could have exposed other people.

“I cannot begin to express to you the feeling of gratitude I have for health and the concern that I just would want people to know it’s important to social distance, and to continue to function with all good practices of hand washing, wiping down surfaces. Whatever your trusted medical professionals are telling you, please, please follow those.”

You were recently called out by Doc Rivers after criticizing Kawhi Leonard’s load management. What did you take away from that? Doris Burke: I had reached out to the Clippers directly and said if Kawhi wants to say anything to me, let him know that I am happy to listen to whatever he might say to me. That’s our job as broadcasters. You have to be able to look that person in the eye. He chose not to do that and that’s fine. The same way with Doc. He was speaking from a frustrated coaching perspective and he used me as a launching off point. … If I could do it all over, I would make it less personal. I could’ve used a different term than “ridiculous.” I am aware of the power of the words, so I use those carefully. I don’t regret anything I said, though, I was frustrated from the fan’s perspective of missing out on a Kawhi-Giannis (Antetokounmpo) matchup.
