Panthers CB Donte Jackson jokes about Buccaneers-Saints fight

Donte Jackson has a pretty wise plan ahead of the Panthers’ Week 3 matchup with the Saints.

Carolina Panthers cornerback Donte Jackson seems just about ready to put his team’s Week 2 loss behind him. In fact, he’s already digging for keys to the next game—and even shared one with reporters on Monday.

When asked what he learned from Sunday’s NFC South clash between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints—with the latter coming into Bank of America Stadium for Week 3—the fifth-year veteran had some words of wisdom.

Hey, he’s not wrong.

Jackson, of course, is referring to the fight that broke out between the teams in their meeting at Caesars Superdome. After Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore and Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady exchanged some words, running back Leonard Fournette and wideout Mike Evans came in hot to defend their 45-year-old leader.

Then, hell broke loose . . .

Jackson, however, has a more pressing issue at hand (or below his belt)—his groin injury. He exited in the fourth quarter of yesterday’s defeat to the New York Giants after defending a deep ball shot from quarterback Daniel Jones.

Today, head coach Matt Rhule said his cornerback is set for an MRI. But Jackson himself would assure the media that he believes his injury is day-to-day and that he’ll be good to go (and not fight) against New Orleans.

Panthers CB Donte Jackson leaves Week 2 matchup vs. Giants

Panthers CB Donte Jackson left Sunday’s game against the Giants with a hamstring injury.

Carolina Panthers cornerback Donte Jackson saw his 2021 campaign cut short due to a groin injury. And now, two games into 2022, he’s sustained another scare.

The fifth-year defender left during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s Week 2 matchup against the New York Giants. After successfully running down a long incompletion from quarterback Daniel Jones to wide receiver Sterling Shepard, Jackson went to a knee and subsequently came out of the game.

As later announced by the team, Jackson would be deemed questionable to return with a hamstring injury.

Jackson is fresh off signing a new three-year, $35.1 million contract this offseason. The 2018 second-round pick briefly hit the waters of free agency before returning to Carolina in the spring.

Hopefully this latest setback isn’t as serious for Jackson, who missed the final five games of the 2021 season. Following his departure, second-year corner Keith Taylor Jr. took over on the outside across from Jaycee Horn.

Panthers announce 2022 team captains

Baker Mayfield was voted as a team captain in his first year with the Panthers.

On Thursday, the Carolina Panthers named their captains for the 2022 season.

Here are the eight men who were voted on by their teammates to, well, lead their teammates into the new campaign.

Panthers CB Donte Jackson on Baker Mayfield’s trash talk: You wanna ‘shut him up’

Panthers CB Donte Jackson praised Baker Mayfield’s trash talk, saying he’s brought out the best of both the offense and the defense during training camp.

On top of being a respected veteran leader, Carolina Panthers cornerback Donte Jackson is also a solidified and seasoned trash talker. Oh, and so is the new guy.

Following Tuesday’s training camp practice, the fifth-year defender was asked about Baker Mayfield’s well-documented gift of gab. And apparently, the chatter definitely made its way over from Cleveland to Carolina this summer.

“Baker pretty good. He pretty good,” Jackson said with a chuckle. “Good days, bad days—you’re gonna hear Baker. We like it. We like it. He definitely brings the best out of the defense and the offense. I got guys who never really say anything sayin’ stuff . . . DJ [Moore].

“But yeah, he’s an intense guy. Every day you just wanna go out there and pick him off 12 times so you shut him up. He’s a competitor and that’s what we do. Like I said, we’re just trying to bring the best out of each other. We’re not submitting to being a team that’s looked down upon.”

On top of actual good quarterback play, the Panthers have lacked a particular aggressiveness and assertiveness under center since the end of Cam Newton’s heyday. While Mayfield certainly isn’t a prime Newton, he does bring an alpha male mentality the offense has been desperately searching for.

We’ll see, with the former No. 1 overall pick inching closer to being named the team’s starter, how far that attitude can take Mayfield and the Panthers.

9 biggest takeaways from Panthers’ 2022 OTAs

What did the 2022 OTAs reveal about the Panthers thus far? Here are nine interesting takeaways.

Thursday, which actually wound up playing host to a fun olympic event, marked the final day of 2022 organized team activities for the Carolina Panthers. And even though these workouts didn’t exactly give us any groundbreaking developments, we can come away with a handful of intriguing nuggets (nine, in fact) moving forward.

So, here they are . . .

Contract details on Panthers CB Donte Jackson’s new three-year deal

The finer points of Donte Jackson’s new three-year contract reveal a pretty team-friendly deal for the Panthers.

The feeling that the Carolina Panthers could lose Donte Jackson was palpable. In fact, it felt more probable than not.

But, fortunately for both sides, that wasn’t ultimately the case.

On Saturday, the 26-year-old cornerback jumped out of the open market and re-upped with the franchise that drafted him. And now we know the details of that pact—an agreement that can pay Jackson up to $35.18 million over the next three seasons.

As far as what’s definitely in the bank for Jackson, $16,757,500 of that $35,180,000 is guaranteed, according to spotrac.com. That puts him at 11th on the team in guaranteed cash, right behind another fresh signing in offensive lineman Austin Corbett ($19,600,000).

With his base salary at $1.035 million for 2022 and slightly under $4.8 million in both 2023 and 2024, Jackson can tap further into that overall number by triggering his bonuses. He can earn a $4 million roster bonus for 2023 and 2024 as well as a per game active bonus of $100,000 apiece.

There is a potential out after the second year of the contract. If Carolina decides to move on from Jackson after 2023, they can save approximately $10.6 million of space while taking on around $3.6 million in dead cap for 2024.

Former LSU cornerback agrees to extension with Panthers

Donte Jackson is sticking around in Carolina after signing a three-year, $35.1 million extension.

Former Tigers cornerback Donte Jackson is sticking around in Carolina.

The 26-year-old signed an extension with the Panthers on Saturday that will keep him in Charlotte for the next three years on a deal that’s worth $35.1 million dollars, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The new contract will net him an average of $11.7 million per year.

Keeping Jackson around makes a lot of sense for Carolina, which chose to let trade acquisition Stephon Gilmore test free agency this offseason.

Jackson has had a very productive start to his career, starting 51 of the 55 games he’s appeared in since entering the league as a second-round pick back in 2018. His two interceptions in 2021 were a career-low, but he has 12 on his career.

He only played in 12 games last year as his season was cut short by a groin injury, but he was still solidly productive, totaling his second-best career mark in tackles with 61.

In college at LSU, Jackson was a Second Team All-American and First Team All-SEC selection during his junior season in 2017. He opted to forego his final season of eligibility and enter the 2018 NFL draft.

His career is off to a great start, and now he’s reached his second contract. He should be a fixture in the Panthers’ defensive backfield for the near future.

4 cornerbacks the Patriots can add to replace J.C. Jackson

The options are slim, but here potential replacements for J.C. Jackson in New England.

The departure of J.C. Jackson leaves a huge hole in the New England Patriots’ defense.

Bill Belichick went from Stephon Gilmore and Jackson anchoring the secondary to Jalen Mills as the top option. Jackson joined the Los Angeles Chargers on a five-year, $82.5 million contract — money the Patriots simply don’t have to spend.

Money is currently the issue. The Patriots spent a ton on players in free agency last offseason and there isn’t much leftover, especially with the task of re-signing veterans like Devin McCourty, Matt Slater, Nick Folk and Brian Hoyer.

The Patriots’ depth at the cornerback position currently consists of Mills, Jonathan Jones, Myles Bryant, Joejuan Williams and Shaun Wade. Let’s take a dive into cheaper options at cornerback that New England can consider.

Ranking 4 free agents who could improve Seahawks cornerback depth

That means Seattle might be in the market for more cornerback depth when the new league year begins.

The Seahawks should have one of the stronger cornerback rooms in the NFL in 2022, assuming they can keep their current group together. Both D.J. Reed and Sidney Jones are set to become free agents in a few weeks, though. Re-signing both of them should be a high priority this offseason for general manager John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll. However, there’s no guarantee they’ll be able to come to terms with both.

That means Seattle might be in the market for more cornerback depth when the new league year begins. Here are four free agents who could help the most.
