Trump National Doral Miami lays off 560 employees

A notice filed with the State of Florida said the resort had been forced to halt its business because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The coronavirus pandemic continues to hit all sectors of the economy, including the Trump National Doral Miami golf resort.

The Associated Press reported that the golf resort in South Florida, where President Donald Trump once talked of hosting the Group of Seven summit, has temporarily laid off 560 workers.

The resort hosted the PGA Tour for more than 60 years on its Blue Monster Course before what was then the WGC-Cadillac Championship moved to Mexico City in 2017 and became the WGC-Mexico Championship.

A notice filed with the State of Florida at the end of last month said the resort was forced to halt its business because of the coronavirus pandemic. The resort near Miami International Airport shut down mid-March.

The AP reported that the laid off workers are mostly food and beverage workers, golf attendants, housekeepers and bellhops. None of them are part of a union.

Last fall the White House announced plans to host the Group of Seven summit at the resort, but bipartisan concern that Trump would violate a clause in the Constitution that prohibits presidents from accepting gifts or payments from foreign governments forced a change of those plans.

About two weeks ago, the Washington Post reported that the Trump Organization had laid off or furloughed 1,500 employees at hotels in the U.S. and Canada.

President Trump scheduled to host phone call with sports industry groups.

WASHINGTON — The sports world remains on hold as the coronavirus pandemic continues.

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump discussed the importance of sports returning in the near future and his acknowledgment of citizens missing games being played.

“We want to get our sports back, so importantly,” Trump said. “These will be some separate calls. Some will be together by the wait lists and some will be separate, but we have to get our sports back.

“I’m tired of watching baseball games that are 14 years old, but I haven’t actually had too much time to watch. I would say maybe I watch one batter and then I get back to work.”

Trump is scheduled to host a phone call today with sports industry groups in the Oval Office at 3:30 p.m. ET.

The sports world going on hiatus was the signal for many that the coronavirus pandemic that is spreading SARS-Covid 19 had to be taken seriously. When the Utah Jazz’ Rudy Gobert fell ill and tested positive prior to a game, it led to the first cancellation in the NBA and hit home for people who had dismissed the possible severity in the United States. Video of Gobert making light of the danger when he maliciously made sure to touch every microphone placed in front of him at a press conference before he tested positive will be the lasting image of the lack of concern and understanding the country had while the disease ravaged parts of Europe and Asia.

Soon after, the NBA shut their season down, followed by the NHL. MLB halted spring training and delayed the coming season and the NFL had to curtail their offseason process of player and prospect visits ahead of free agency and the NFL draft, which has remained on schedule for Thursday April 23 but has gone completely virtual. Now, president Donald Trump, in his forever focus on the American economy has tapped several sports power brokers from the leagues to help shape the federal response to the economic downturn. That group includes Dallas Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones.

Jones, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, Patriots owner Robert Kraft and other high-profile entities including the commissioners of the four major sports, will be part of an advisory panel. The sports panel (one of several) show how integral the live-sports world is to the nation’s well-being, as all leagues are billion-dollar entities.

“We want to get our sports back,” Trump said at the White House during his daily coronavirus press conference. “I’m tired of watching baseball games that are 14 years old.”

Trump plans to talk to the group on Wednesday.

The president has previously been critical of the NFL during the early months of his presidency, when he called NFL players who were peacefully protesting social injustice and police brutality “sons of [expletive]” and called for owners to fire players who knelt during the national anthem. He has also been complimentary of Jones and Kraft in various instances.

Now, Trump has reached out for the league’s help as the country looks to find a path out of the shutdown of all but essential services. By official count, the virus has infected over half a million people in just over a month, killing over 20,000. Some feel the official count is lower than reality due to issues with difficulty in gaining access to tests for many across the country.  There is still no agreed upon cure for the infection and a vaccine is projected by some to possibly be a year out. Leagues are looking to find a way to play their seasons, including MLB considering having all 30 teams play in front of empty stadiums in Arizona.

Other leagues have also proposed playing games at some point in empty arenas, which would allow for them to be broadcast. While that will entertain the millions of Americans who are obeying stay-at-home orders, the eventual re-opening of stadiums will likely be the goal of the panel, as that will have a wider ranging impact on the economy in major cities across the country.

In recent polls, many sports fans said they will not attend sporting events until a vaccine is made available to the public.

President Trump details ‘authorizing each individual governor to implement a reopening plan’

President Trump details authorizing each individual governor to implement a reopening plan.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump and the Coronavirus Task Force met with media Tuesday at the White House Rose Garden.

Trump discussed preparing “for the next phase of this great struggle” within the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We must also do everything in our power to restore prosperity for the American worker,” Trump said. “There’s tremendous interest and excitement surrounding the administration’s efforts to get the economy roaring once again, and I think it’s going to roar once it gets open.”

Trump mentioned that he has “had requests to participate from the best in the world as we share their enthusiasm to get our country going.”

“I thank them for wanting to contribute and we look forward to speaking with many industry leaders seeking their input on how we can return to what was, until very recently, the greatest economy anywhere in the world,” Trump said. “The plans to reopen the country are close to being finalized and we will soon be sharing details and new guidelines with everybody.

“I will be speaking to all 50 governors very shortly and I will then be authorizing each individual governor of each individual state to implement a reopening and a very powerful reopening plan of their state at a time and in a manner as most appropriate. The day will be very close because certain states, as you know, are in much different condition and in a much different place than other states. It’s going to be very, very close, maybe even before the date of May 1st – there are over 20 that are in extremely good shape and we think we’re going to be able to get them open fairly quickly and then others will follow.”

Trump also discussed sports returning in the near future and his acknowledgment of citizens missing games being played.

“We want to get our sports back, so importantly,” he said. “These will be some separate calls. Some will be together by the wait lists and some will be separate, but we have to get our sports back.

Coronavirus ‘tipping point’ primed to have economy, sports returning soon

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump and the Coronavirus Task Force returned to the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room of the White House Monday to provide American citizens an update of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trump was asked about when states could reopen from shelter at home orders due to being at war with an invisible enemy, and how the Commander in Chief can play a role in lifting such mandates.

“The president of the United States has the authority to do what the president has the authority to do, which is very powerful,” Trump said. “The president of the United States calls the shots. If we weren’t here for the states, you would have had a problem in this country like you’ve never seen before.

“We were here to back them up, and we’ve more than backed them up. We did a job that nobody ever thought was possible. It’s a decision for the president of the United States.”

Trump made it clear that he will “work with the states” going forward as it is “very important” in a process of reopening the economy and having citizens return to work.

“You have local governments, they’re pinpointed,” Trump said. “It’s like a microchip. They’re pinpointed. We have local government that hopefully will do a good job.

“If they don’t do a good job, I’d step in so fast, but no, they can’t do anything without the approval of the president of the United States.”

On April 8, Trump initiated wartime powers for equipment in ordering General Motors to produce 30,000 ventilators. Trump’s wartime equipment measures followed as some state governors were short on lifesaving units.

Billionaire Mark Cuban cast doubts on the rosy economic forecast President Donald Trump cast on Friday in an interview on “Fox News Sunday.” “I wish he was right but he’s not,” Cuban told host Chris Wallace in response to a question about Trump’s projections for an economic recovery. “I think it’s going to be slower. I think there’s going to be so many different ways we’ll have to adapt to this new abnormal.”
