Don Chapman Jr. shows off hops at UNC football practice

Defensive back Don Chapman Jr., who played in 11 games for the UNC football team in 2022, makes a highlight-reel interception in practice.

Practices are underway and players are feeling adrenaline rushes across the country – college football season is here.

UNC is hoping to start strong but, unlike last year, finish on a positive note as well. The Heels bursted out to 9-1 with a record-setting win over App State, a closing-second comeback win over Duke and a stomping of Virginia Tech, a team which always seems to have UNC’s number.

Despite having one of college football’s best linebackers in Cedric Gray, Carolina’s defense ranked near the FBS basement. Tar Heel opponents scored at least 28 points in all but five games against them. UNC allowed 5,697 yards (6th-most).

This year, the Heels already appear to have another stud on defense, as Don Chapman has been showing off in practice.

In this clip, Chapman makes a leaping grab, jukes out his pursuer and races to the endzone.

Carolina will certainly welcome ball hawks to the team, as no player had more than three interceptions in 2022 (Storm Duck). Gray finished second with two interceptions, while Power Echols, DeAndre Boykins, Cam’Ron Kelly and Will Hardy each picked off one pass.

Three Tar Heels return to practice ahead of showdown vs. Pitt

The UNC football program could get a boost with three players returning to practice this week.

The UNC football program could get some reinforcements for Saturday’s showdown with Pitt, fresh off the bye week.

Head coach Mack Brown met the media on Monday to talk about the bye week and the week ahead for the program. In the presser, Brown revealed that offensive lineman [autotag]William Barnes[/autotag], defensive back [autotag]Don Chapman[/autotag] and running back [autotag]D.J. Jones[/autotag] will all return to practice this week. That’s a good sign that they will be available for Saturday night’s game in Chapel Hill.

Barnes was a starter on the offensive line before suffering an injury and getting him back for the stretch run will be huge. With Jones, it’s another piece in the backfield for UNC’s run game which has struggled over the past few weeks.

On the defensive side of the ball, Chapman will get some playing time in the secondary. UNC’s defense has been hit or miss this year, showing flashes of being able to turn it around but also giving up big plays.

Don Chapman expected to be available against Notre Dame

UNC football DB Don Chapman is expected to be available against Notre Dame after missing the Tar Heels last game due to a legal issue.

UNC football senior defensive back [autotag]Don Chapman[/autotag] is expected to be back for the Tar Heels this upcoming week after missing UNC’s game against Georgia State in week two.

Chapman was arrested on September 8th and charged with ‘domestic criminal trespassing, assault on a female, and misdemeanor battery of an unborn child’.

After the initial report came out, it was reported that ‘the judge read the police report which stated that Chapman’s pregnant girlfriend threatened to commit suicide. According to the report, when Chapman took the gun away from her, the assault occurred. The report cited no injuries occurred, and that his girlfriend was charged with simple assault’, according to WRAL.

On Monday, InsideCarolina’s Ross Martin reported that Chapman is expected to be available for this weekend’s matchup with Notre Dame.

Chapman is part of an experienced but injury plagued secondary that has struggled thus far this season.

Last year, Chapman collected 27 tackles and three pass breakups in eight games and four starts.

So far this season, Chapman has three tackles.

Kickoff for UNC’s matchup with Notre Dame is scheduled for 3:30 pm ET on ABC.
