Michigan football freshmen who are standing out to Sherrone Moore in fall camp

These are definitely names to know NOW! #GoBlue

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — While fans usually expect more each year from the known commodities, a few players always come from out of seemingly nowhere. Sherrone Moore talked about a few Michigan football players who have improved the most throughout fall camp, but what about the players who have yet to play a down of college football?

The Wolverines routinely have had freshmen step up in Year 1.

Going back to Jim Harbaugh’s second year (2016), those players were running back Chris Evans, left guard Ben Bredeson and linebacker Devin Bush. In 2017, it was two wide receivers, Donovan Peoples-Jones and Tarik Black (before his Week 3 injury). In 2019, it was running back Zach Charbonnet. In the much-maligned 2020 season, running back Blake Corum was the first tailback to receive a carry. Defensive tackle Mason Graham made some big plays in his first year as did cornerback Will Johnson (2022). Wide receiver Semaj Morgan was that guy this past season.

So who is standing out thus far in 2024? Sherrone Moore has a few candidates.

“Yeah, there’s a couple of them. Start at the quarterback position: Jadyn Davis, he just has the ‘it’ factor, makes plays, competitive,” Moore said. “Obviously, was a three-time state champion player of the year, but poised, has ability. We’ll see how it progresses.

“His teammate, Channing Goodwin — he’s a playmaker. He’s a dude that’s going to probably help us this year in some way, shape or form. And always said that it’s easier to play the farther you are from the ball, especially early. If you’re a lineman, D-lineman, it’s harder to play early. So those guys, those guys up front, those linemen, especially O-linemen, it’s harder for them to play early. And they’re all going to be really good players, but those two, from a skill set standpoint, I think offensively will be the guys, and then the tight ends have been awesome.

“Jordan Marshall is probably the next guy. He’s got a chance to be special, dynamic.”

Moore was quickly interrupted so that we could learn more about Marshall. Could he be that third tailback, usurping the snaps of some of the others who have been in the program? Given what he’s seen from the veterans, it will be a difficult proposition.

“Yeah, we’ll see,” Moore said. “Ben Hall is — you know, having guys like Jordan Marshall in the room will make you play fast and physical. And Ben Hall has played, all of 230 pounds he is, so he’s run physical, fast, so super excited how he’s hit and how he’s gaining momentum.”

There are also two defensive players who could see the field early and often in 2024; both early enrollees. Michigan needs depth at edge rusher and has relied on freshmen before: Rashan Gary in 2016 and Derrick Moore in 2022 to name two. And though there’s some depth at linebacker, there’s one name that’s stood out, Moore says.

“Dominic Nichols is probably the guy that jumps out the most as a freshman. That’s really because he’s been here in the spring and he came here and he’s been in the fall. So he’s a guy that I think as a freshman has got a chance. And then probably one more guy is Cole Sullivan.”

Scouting report

Via Touch The Banner:

Nichols is a big body whose frame has some room to grow. He’s already listed at 252 lbs. and there has been some talk that he’s 6’6″, though most sites list him at 6’5″. He shows the ability to be physical when making tackles and taking on blockers, and he has adequate speed to close out on ball carriers. His wingspan allows him to snare some ball carriers that otherwise might slip past.

On the negative side, Nichols plays too high and, as a result of that, does not show much of an ability to convert what he sees into a sense of urgency to change direction. He takes on too many blocks in the chest and does not sufficiently use his length to shock, lock out, and shed blockers. Despite playing against a lot of smaller, less talented players, he does not disengage from tackles very efficiently. His first step is somewhat slow, and he often has to use counter moves to try to push the pocket or get a pass rush. For being a 4-star edge prospect, he very rarely wins with speed.

Overall, Nichols is a solid strongside defensive end prospect without a lot of juice. He will need to learn technique and to play lower, but I think his upside is limited due to his lack of quickness. He could end up being a Mike Morris-level standup defensive end, but just like Morris – who finished this past season with 7.5 sacks to lead the team – his ability to rush the passer might be more about being able to bully tackles into the backfield than about any sort of mismatch in athleticism. I think Michigan’s defense will be more effective overall if they have more of a quick-twitch player there at that spot. Perhaps expecting an Aidan Hutchinson every year is too much, but somewhere between Hutchinson and Morris is fair to hope for on a pretty regular basis.

Michigan football gets another 2024 edge commitment

Twitter reactions: Michigan football lands 4-star edge Dominic Nichols

#Michigan is back on the board!

It has been a rough week when it comes to Michigan football recruiting. The Wolverines inexplicably lost linebacker, Aaron Chiles, when he committed to Florida. The maize and blue also lost targets Darrien Mayo to Clemson and cornerback prospect Bryce West to Ohio State.

But, Sunday is a new day, and Michigan is back to landing big targets.

2024 edge prospect Dominic Nichols announced his commitment to Michigan over Kentucky, Penn State, Clemson and Wisconsin.

With Michigan landing Nichols, he is the 23rd commitment to the class and the second edge prospect. According to the 247Sports composite, Nichols is a four-star recruit and the 433rd-ranked recruit in the 2024 class. He hails from Ijamsville (Maryland) Oakdale High School.

After Michigan landed Nichols, Twitter went nuts with reactions from analysts and recruits.

Here are the best Twitter reactions after the Wolverines landed one of their top targets in the cycle.

Michigan football gets another 2024 edge commitment

No. 23! #GoBlue

Michigan football has been on a torrid pace in 2024 recruiting, but it has had some challenges over the past eight days.

It lost two Maryland-based prospects: linebacker Aaron Chiles and edge Darien Mayo — both were considered Wolverine leans — before also losing out on Ohio cornerback Bryce West to rival Ohio State.

So the maize and blue needed some good news to stem the tide.

On Sunday, they received it. 2024 Ijamsville (Maryland) Oakdale High School four-star edge rusher Dominic Nichols committed to Michigan football over Wisconsin, Clemson and Kentucky, making him the 23rd pledge in the class and second bona fide edge rusher. Devon Baxter is the other.

Nichols is rated a four-star and the No. 433 player in the country, per the 247Sports composite. He’s the 28th-best edge rusher and the No. 12 player in the state of Maryland.

Listed at 6 feet, 5 inches, 252 pounds, he also had offers from Penn State, Florida State, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and others.

The Wolverines are still targeting several other four-star edge rushers, such as Florida-based Elias Rudolph and Connecticut’s Jacob Smith, twin brother of current commit Jerod Smith.

Michigan football 2024 edge target names decision date, time

Signs are looking good for #Michigan. #GoBlue

Michigan football has been on a torrid pace in 2024 recruiting, but it hasn’t been a good week for the Wolverines.

Linebacker Aaron Chiles surprisingly spurned the maize and blue for Florida. His high school teammate, edge Darien Mayo, chose Clemson. Finally, cornerback Bryce West stayed home and chose Ohio State, despite heavy pursuit.

The Wolverines need a palate cleanser, and it looks like they may get one.

Hailing from Ijamsville (Maryland) Oakdale High School, Dominic Nichols is a four-star edge rusher who has five (of six) predictions indicating he’ll end up choosing Michigan football. He plans to announce his commitment to his school of choice on Sunday at 1 p.m. EDT.

According to Nichols, he’ll choose among Michigan, Wisconsin, Kentucky, and Clemson. He also had Georgia, Florida State, South Carolina and Virginia Tech in his top eight.

The 247Sports composite has Nichols listed as the No. 433 player in the country, a four-star prospect, the 28th-best edge and the No. 12 player in the state of Maryland.
