Georgia WR named an underrated 2025 NFL draft prospect

Georgia Bulldogs standout wide receiver, former Missouri transfer listed as an underrated 2025 NFL draft prospect

Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Dominic Lovett has been named as an underrated 2025 NFL draft prospect. Lovett recorded 54 receptions for 613 receiving yards and four touchdowns during the 2023 college football season.

Lovett, who transferred to Georgia from Missouri after his sophomore season, has been very productive throughout his college career. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound receiver is not the biggest or fastest, but he is capable of running nuanced routes and generating separation.

“The Bulldogs have the option to use the Missouri transfer in the backfield, slot and outside,” said CBS Sports’ Black Brockermeyer. We disagree with Georgia using Lovett in the backfield as a rusher. Lovett recorded zero carries in 2023 with Georgia. Yes, he previously totaled 11 carries for 46 rushing yards and a touchdown during his career at Missouri, but he’s mostly an option on short to intermediate routes. Georgia did occasionally start some of Lovett’s routes from the backfield last season, but he did more of his damage from plays where he went in motion and got open quickly.

“He’s mostly a possession receiver who can adjust to the ball in the air and catches it away from his body,” continued Brockermeyer.

We agree Lovett is flying under the radar on NFL draft boards. Lovett is not ranked among the top 14 wide receivers in a recent big board.

‘We don’t rebuild, we reload,’ Georgia’s JaCorey Thomas on battle at DB, spring practice standouts

Georgia DB Jacorey Thomas joins UGA Wire to describe the battle at DB and much more…

Georgia has plenty of work to do within the secondary this spring, especially at defensive back.

Starters Javon Bullard and Tykee Smith are off to the 2024 NFL draft following outstanding careers as Bulldogs. The questions remains where Kirby Smart and staff will turn to make up for the lost production.

One of the talented players that has an inside shot at seeing snaps at either safety or nickelback, referred to as STAR in UGA’s nomenclature, is rising junior JaCorey Thomas out of Orlando, Fla.

Thomas, representing The BetterGuard, recently took some time out of spring practice to share some insight with me on his journey to Athens, the sting of the College Football Playoff snub and what the battle at defensive back has been like since the Bulldogs have been back in action.

Thomas’ journey from South Florida to Athens

A Boone High School product, Thomas signed with the Bulldogs as a four-star recruit in the 2021 class.

Georgia wasn’t an expected destination for Thomas, who had Florida schools, including Florida State, as front runners early in his recruitment. His parents are both Seminoles, leading to national recruiting services projecting him to FSU.

Thomas also had Florida, Miami and UCF among his top choices. That is before Smart and the Bulldogs made him feel like a priority. After receiving some advice from his mother, Thomas decided to expand his recruitment outside of the state.

He made the trip to Athens to workout for the Georgia staff.

“And I remember after my workout, all the coaches started coming, I guess they were in a meeting, all the coaches started coming down from their offices, trying to introduce themselves to me. And I was like, dang, you know, I must have done pretty good at the workout.”

After staffers introduced themselves to Thomas, his mother and two sisters, Smart requested that Thomas visit his office.

“And speaking to coach Smart. I was just like, ‘Dang, this is a very genuine man that I think I can play here.'”

“Sometimes recruiting feels like politics in some certain way and form. But he made it feel like home. Like he really made me feel like I belong here in Georgia. So from that point on, I was like, ‘Dang, I think I’m gonna be a Georgia Bulldog.'”

I asked what made Smart’s approach different than other coaches that were recruiting him.

“He was more talking to me about me as a person, instead of about football as a whole.”

“Like that really stuck with me. I was like, ‘Dang, I really think I can play under this man. And I think he will be a great coach for me to play under.’ Plus, he played safety in college too. So I was like,’I think that’d be a good idea to play under somebody who played at safety.'”

After that conversation, Smart and staff had already made quite an impression on Thomas. Georgia also made sure to bring around current and former players to help explain what it would be like to be a Bulldog.

Players like Lewis Cine and Kelee Ringo made UGA feel like a brotherhood.

“It was more like a brotherhood feeling rather than like, ‘Oh, there’s another recruit.’

“They’re my brothers. They’re always gonna be my brothers. From the day I stepped on the campus from the day I leave campus… So it was more of that type of thing. Like, I think this could really be my home.”

Sour ending to the 2023 season

After witnessing Georgia’s 2021 national championship win, Thomas joined the team with the goal of getting his own ring. The Bulldogs went on to complete a perfect 15-0 season and a second consecutive national title in Thomas’ true freshman season.

Following back-to-back titles, Thomas was ready to contribute even more as a sophomore. He went on to appear in 12 games, totaling nine tackles as the Bulldogs narrowly missed out on a three-peat due to a 3-point loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship.

Georgia could have folded after being snubbed from the College Football Playoff. Thomas explained that the situation only “fueled the fire”.

“It fueled the fire, it didn’t stop nobody, it really fueled the fire. You know how coach Smart is with using stuff like that to fuel the team.”

We’re used to seeing players sit out of bowl games more and more often. While Florida State witnessed numerous players sit out of the Orange Bowl matchup, the Bulldogs had a different mindset entirely.

“But the team was already on go after that. They’re like, ‘Oh, we have one game to play?’ We’re gonna play with our hearts out…

You know, you saw a lot of kids opted out to play in the bowl games and stuff. And I know we’re gonna make a standpoint with this bowl game and see how we use this. Show how we were meant to be in the CFP…”

Thomas went on to explain why the Bulldogs felt so strongly about finishing out the season on top. He explained that part of Georgia’s “DNA” is connection.

“So one of our DNA traits for our team is connection. So some of the kids are leaving that know they’re going to go to the draft. It was more like, ‘Oh, we’re gonna play these last few games, this last game for my brothers.’”

The team DNA that Thomas is speaking of is made of up resiliency, toughness, connection and composure.

Part of the Bulldogs’ team culture is highlighted by “Skull Sessions”. Throughout each year, players have opportunities to share their personal stories with their teammates and coaches in hopes to build unity.

“But part of our Skull Sessions is for freshmen, like me when I came in. That’s when they teach our DNA traits, what Georgia is built on. And from that on, that forms your team every year… So it allows us to know each other better and develop a better sense of family and unity.”

Impression of Travaris Robinson

Part of Georgia’s challenge this spring is to get new co-defensive coordinator/ safeties coach, Travaris Robinson, up to speed after his offseason move from Alabama.

“T-Rob (Travaris Robinson) is a very strict coach, he’s a STAR coach. But you know, everybody’s needs a little tough love on the field. He’s gonna be tough, he’s a coach… But off the field, he’s gonna really talk to you and let you know how everything’s going and how everything is.”

Will Muschamp held a similar role before his decision to move to defensive analyst to give him more free time to spend with his son and Vanderbilt quarterback, Whit Muschamp.

While Will might not be in his previous role, he is still very much involved. Thomas described it as a change of position.

Reload, not rebuild

Despite the roster turnover, Thomas isn’t concerned with the depth Georgia has in its secondary.

“So one thing about Georgia — we don’t rebuild, we reload.”

Recruiting success certainly helps the matter. The Bulldogs just reeled in their fourth No. 1 overall class during Smart’s tenure.

“We were always training, always developing. So when people leave, there’s people in position to step in and take over the spots.”

Georgia signed the No. 1 cornerback, Ellis Robinson IV, and the No. 1 safety, K.J. Bolden, in the 2024 class. While those names are easy to point to when considering which young players can contribute early, Thomas pointed out other talent that he expects to make a difference at Georgia.

“K.J. Bolden and Ellis Robinson IV, they’re, you know, the standouts. But you also have guys like Ondre Evans and Demello Jones that are also really good. (Georgia) is gonna make them way better than they are now.”

On the other hand, the Bulldogs also have some work to do on offense, specifically at receiver, following the departure of weapons like Brock Bowers, Ladd McConkey and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint.

I asked Thomas which player has been the toughest to guard thus far in spring practice. His answer came without hesitation.

“Dominic Lovett… you don’t understand. Personally, I think that’s the hardest person to guard on a team. Dominic Lovett is quick, fast and shifty, really shifty. So it’s kind of hard to get a little touch and little hand on him, but I think Dominic Lovett has really stepped his game up this season.”

Georgia will continue evaluate position battles this spring leading up to the annual G-Day spring scrimmage on Saturday, April 13. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET, televised on SEC Network+.

Transfer receivers are making a difference for the Bulldogs

The UGA football passing offense has had some questions but Dominic Lovett and Rara Thomas have helped answer those.

The Georgia Bulldogs have seen multiple receivers leave the program over the past couple of seasons with Jermain Burton going to Alabama and Adonai Mitchell going to Texas. Those guys are having good years, but the transfers the Bulldogs have taken in have done great work as well.

Dominic Lovett and Rara Thomas have been welcome additions to the Georgia passing game with productive years so far. The Dawgs’ passing game was a bit of a concern with these new guys coming in and Carson Beck at the helm, but a dominant win over Kentucky has quieted a lot of critics.

Lovett, the Missouri transfer, started off the season battling for the No. 1 wide receiver spot as Ladd McConkey was out early in the year. He’s become the reliable hands target over the middle of the field and he’s compiled 22 catches for 210 yards.

Thomas, the Mississippi State transfer, had his best game as Bulldog against Kentucky with an incredible toe tap touchdown. He’s found his niche as a big play threat with a talent for high-pointing the ball. Thomas has caught 14 balls for 230 yards and one touchdown.

Although Bowers and McConkey are the names that fans will recognize catching the ball, Lovett and Thomas have quietly found themselves as consistent receivers in the fold and they could become X-factors as the Bulldogs face off against tougher foes in late October and November.

Additionally, Georgia may look to the transfer portal again to replenish the wide receiver room as the Bulldogs have just two commitments from wide receivers in the class of 2024.

Missouri transfer WR Dominic Lovett talks playing Georgia last season

Missouri transfer Dominic Lovett talks UGA matchup last year: ‘I feel like it (Georgia) was the coolest team to play.’

Missouri was the biggest SEC challenge in Georgia’s national championship season last year.

The Bulldogs trailed 22-12 early in the fourth quarter before mounting a comeback and squeaking out a 26-22 win in Columbia.

The Tigers’ leading receiver in 2022, Dominic Lovett, finds himself in Athens this year after transferring to Georgia this offseason. Lovett spoke to the media on Wednesday about playing the Bulldogs last season.

I feel like it (Georgia) was the coolest team to play. I felt like we got after them pretty good, and it was a good game. They came out on top. I had no bad blood. I just told them after the game that it was a good game and maybe we’ll catch y’all next year. I just so happened to end up here next year.

Lovett was a force for Missouri in the slot as a sophomore catching 56 passes for 846 yards and three touchdowns with an impressive 15.1 yards per catch. He earned second-team All-SEC honors following the 2022 college football season.

We mostly joke and laugh about it. They tease me about it every day when it comes on TV. Hey Dom, look, you’re on the TV, and I just laugh. But it is kinda cool seeing where I was and how I ended up here, from going against them to now playing with them. That’s a big factor. That’s pretty dope.

Lovett joins a loaded UGA receiver room, including returning leading wideout Ladd McConkey with Arian Smith, Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, Dillon Bell and Mississippi State transfer Rara Thomas.

Insight on Georgia WRs Dominic Lovett, Rara Thomas by former SEC teammates

Former SEC teammates talk Dominic Lovett, Rara Thomas at SEC Media Days…

Georgia’s offense dipped into the transfer portal this offseason for two SEC wide receivers in Dominic Lovett (Missouri) and Rara Thomas (Mississippi State).

Both Lovett and Thomas led their respective teams in receiving last season and already know what it takes to make plays in the toughest conference in college football.

Missouri junior defensive back Kris Abrams-Draine praised former teammate Lovett at SEC Media Days this week.

“He’s going to push you. He’s a great athlete himself. Going against somebody that is already good is going to make you better.”

Abrams-Draine recalls going up against Lovett everyday in practice.

“I think it was like his first practice or something and I had just gotten to DB so we had been friends but we were going at it the whole practice. I wasn’t going against nobody else but him. “I feel like that made us come closer as friends … It’s going to be way different (going up against him in a game) because it counts. Practice counts too but this shows on our record. We’re going to compete and keep it how we’re supposed to, but we’re going to compete.”

Lovett, an All-SEC selection, racked up 56 catches for 846 yards and three touchdowns in 2022. The former four-star recruit led the Tigers receiving yards each of the first five games of the season, the only player to accomplish that in program history.

“Yeah, there’s no replacing Dominic Lovett,” Missouri head coach Eliah Drinkwitz said. “Dominic Lovett is his own player and has his own unique characteristics and competitive spirit, and wish him the best in his new opportunity.”

Up next is Thomas, who was commended by Mississippi State star quarterback Will Rodgers.

“It was special. We were kind of on the same page with some things,” Rogers said. “Anytime he got man-to-man coverage, we were trying to get him the ball. He does a really good job and I hope he succeeds at Georgia.”

Thomas and Rodgers were a playmaking machine in 2022. The duo connected for 626 yards on 44 completions with seven scores.

“He’s just raw talent, man,” Rogers said. “I don’t think he started playing football until he was a junior in high school maybe, but his ball skills are out of this world and he can go make a play for sure.”

The Bulldogs will need Lovett and Thomas to help replace the production lost from Texas transfer Adonai Mitchell, Georgia Tech transfer Dominick Blaylock and Kearis Jackson, who is now a Tennessee Titan.

Having experienced SEC wideouts should help whoever is tabbed as starting quarterback this fall.

Three Georgia players make College Sports Wire’s list of best SEC WRs for 2023

SEC WR rankings have three Georgia players ranked inside the top-ten

Despite losing George Pickens, Jermaine Burton and AD Mitchell in recent years to either the NFL draft or the NCAA transfer portal, the Georgia Bulldogs are loaded up at the wide receiver position heading into the 2023 season.

Georgia returns Ladd McConkey, who is entering his redshirt junior year in Athens. He was the team’s leading wide receiver last year with 762 yards and nine total touchdowns.

After a 2022 offseason that saw Georgia stay inactive in the transfer portal, Kirby Smart took a different approach in 2023. UGA went and signed two standout receivers from the portal: Dominic Lovett from Missouri and Rara Thomas from Mississippi State.

College Sports Wire released its ranking of the top 12 SEC wide receivers for the 2023 college football season and included Lovett, McConkey and Thomas.

Lovett checked in at No. 4, McConkey No. 6 and Thomas at No. 8 to give Georgia three of the top 10 wide receivers in the SEC this year.

Oh, and this does not include tight end Brock Bowers, who is without a doubt the best pass-catcher in the conference entering 2023.

Regarding Lovett, Patrick Conn of College Sports Wire wrote:

Lovett finished No. 8 in receiving yards last season with Missouri. Now as he heads to Georgia, the former Tigers wide receiver is expected to be the top receiver for the Bulldogs. He and tight end Brock Bowers should command a lot of attention in the passing game. New quarterback Carson Beck should have an easier time getting acclimated due to having this duo on his team. Ladd McConkey also finished among the top 10 in yards last season.

Lovett’s 2022 stats: 56 catches, 846 yards, 3 touchdowns

On McConkey:

McConkey was a key member of the last two national championship teams in Athens. He hauled in 5 passes for 88 yards and 2 touchdowns in the 2022-23 national title game against TCU. He returns along with Brock Bowers to team up with newcomers RaRa Thomas and Dominic Lovett. The Bulldogs should have an explosive offense in the upcoming season.

McConkey’s 2022 stats: 58 catches, 762 yards, 9 total touchdowns

And on Thomas:

Thomas, much like Lovett, leaves one SEC team to team up with the two-time defending national champions. Thomas has already dealt with offseason issues after being arrested this offseason. An epidemic that has seemed to spread across the Bulldogs team. If he can put that behind him, Thomas should be a key contributor for Georgia. He didn’t play a snap in the spring game and head coach Kirby Smart stated he “has some things to work on.” We shall see if he gets that sorted out ahead of the 2023 college football season, but Thomas has the talent to be an impact playmaker.

Thomas’ 2022 stats: 44 catches, 626 yards, 7 touchdowns

Missouri HC Eli Drinkwitz talks new Georgia WR Dominic Lovett

“Obviously was really good for us”…

Georgia got one of the best players out of the transfer portal in former Missouri wide receiver Dominic Lovett, who led the Tigers in receiving last season.

Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz spoke highly of Lovett, even after his decision to leave for Athens.

“[Dominic is] a really good player. Great young man. High-character man,” Drinkwitz said on Tuesday at SEC spring meetings. “[He] works really hard. Obviously was really good for us.”

The former four-star recruit out of Belleville, Ill., was a force for the Tigers offense last fall. Lovett hauled in 56 passes for 846 yards and three touchdowns.

Lovett finished seventh in receptions per game (4.7) and third in receiving yards per game (70.5) among SEC receivers in 2022.

Lovett will contend for the starting slot role this fall and should serve as a key piece in the Bulldogs’ receiving room that lost Adonai Mitchell (Texas), Dominic Blaylock (Georgia Tech) and Kearis Jackson (NFL).

Georgia has 2 of the top-graded returning SEC WRs

Dominic Lovett & Ladd McConkey listed as top-graded SEC WRs…

The Georgia offense will look much differently in 2023 with a new offensive coordinator in Mike Bobo and a new quarterback taking over for two-time national champion Stetson Bennett.

Whether it’s Carson Beck or Brock Vandagriff at the helm this fall, they will have plenty of weapons to use at their disposal.

Besides the security blanket that is Mackey Award winning tight end Brock Bowers, the Bulldogs boast two of the top-graded returning wide receivers in the SEC in rising junior Ladd McConkey and Missouri transfer Dominic Lovett, per Pro Football Focus (PFF).

PFF lists Lovett, a former four-star recruit, as the No. 1 returning SEC wideout with a 83.9 grade after leading the Tigers in receiving last season with 56 catches for 846 yards and three touchdowns.

At the No. 7 spot on PFF’s list is McConkey with a 77.4 grade after finishing behind Bowers as Georgia’s second-leading receiver with 58 catches for 762 yards and seven touchdowns in 2022.

The former three-star recruit is one of the most senior members of the Bulldogs receiver room that looks to replace Kearis Jackson, who signed with the Tennessee Titans, and star wideout Adonai Mitchell, a Texas transfer, along with Dominic Blaylock, who transferred to Georgia Tech.

Georgia transfer WRs are turning heads in spring practice

Dominic Lovett, Rara Thomas are impressing at spring practice…

Georgia football added two of the top transfer wide receivers this offseason: Dominic Lovett (Missouri) and Rara Thomas (Mississippi State).

Both Lovett and Thomas led their respective teams in receiving last year and should add value to the Bulldogs receiving room after the departure of Dominic Blaylock to the transfer portal and Adonai Mitchell to Texas.

Georgia players are impressed with how Lovett and Thomas are practicing so far this spring.

“Bringing them to Georgia, it just increases the intensity at practice,” cornerback Kamari Lassiter said. “You know, the competition level between the receivers and the DBs. That’s some things like the guys like me — ultra-competitive guys, I like that, you know? I want the best guys to be here, and they want to go against the best guys as well. So just those guys being here, it’s really good for us.”

Star tight end Brock Bowers likes what he sees from the pair.

“RaRa’s just been out there making plays. I mean, he’s just an athlete. He’s going to be really good for us, and then Dom, he’s shifty and catching almost everything. So I mean, I think they’re going to be two good additions for our receiver room.”

Defensive back Javon Bullard knew Lovett before the former Missouri Tiger came to Athens.

“Dom’s like my little brother, man. He was one of the first guys that, like, when we came back, we were in the locker room just chopping it up. Very quick, very fast. Like I said, very agile, gets in and out of his breaks really good. Great route runner, knows how to play with his speed a lot, so I’m looking forward to seeing him play. And RaRa, I haven’t really gotten to guard RaRa just because he’s so outside. I know Kamari got to go up against him a lot, and just based off what he was saying he’s very quick off his first step off the release and has great hands, too. So like I said, I’m excited to see both those guys help us.”

You can catch Lovett and Thomas in action at the annual ‘G-Day’ spring game in Sanford Stadium on April 15 at 4 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

New Georgia transfer led all WRs in this stat last season

Dominic Lovett has the ability to contribute right away…

Former Missouri receiver Dominic Lovett joined Georgia this offseason as one of the top transfer portal additions in college football.

Lovett led the Tigers in receiving last season with 56 catches for 846 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore.

The slot receiver was particularly special versus man coverage and according to Pro Football Focus, was graded as the best in college football in man-to-man situations in 2022.

The Belleville, Ill., native is a former four-star recruit in the class of 2020.

Lovett boosts a Georgia receiving corps that will be replacing star wideout Adonai Mitchell (Texas transfer), Kearis Jackson (NFL) and Dominick Blaylock, who has yet to find a home in the transfer portal.

The Bulldogs also added Mississippi State’s leading receiver Rara Thomas via the portal.
