The Yankees’ Domingo Germán wowed baseball fans with the 24th perfect game in MLB history

Baseball immortality secured.

Yankees pitcher Domingo Germán went into Wednesday’s game against the Oakland Athletics coming off two of his worst starts of the season. But that’s the magical thing about baseball: Your fortunes can change in an instant.

And on this night, Germán put together a game that he’ll remember forever.

Needing just 99 pitches, Germán became the 24th player in Major League history to throw a perfect game. It was the first perfect game since Felix Hernandez’s historic performance in 2012 and the fourth perfect game in Yankees history.

Where several pitchers have come close to perfection in recent years only to allow a baserunner in the eighth or ninth inning, Germán made it look easy in the ninth in Oakland.

The final out of the game came on a first-pitch breaking ball to Esteury Ruiz. Germán drew two outs in the ninth off of first-pitch swings in at-bats. After the 11-0 win, Germán offered an emotional reflection on the accomplishment and dedicated the game to his uncle who recently passed away.

MLB fans were also in awe of the historic performance.

MLB fans crushed the Yankees after Domingo German got ejected for sticky substances

The Yankees aren’t even subtle.

The New York Yankees went into the second game of their series with the Blue Jays already dealing with cheating allegations about Aaron Judge’s side eye before a home run. So you’d think that the Yankees players wouldn’t want to do anything to attract more unwelcome attention.

Yankees pitcher Domingo German missed that memo.

Last month, Twins manager Rocco Baldelli was livid (and ultimately ejected) when crew chief James Hoye allowed German to remain in the game after the pitcher failed a test for sticky substances. It was an inexcusable move by Hoye and his crew. Well, on Tuesday, Hoye was working behind home plate for the game in Toronto. This time, Hoye was not lenient with the Yankees starter.

After the third inning, the umpires checked German’s hands and determined that his hands were too sticky. He was ejected and will face a mandatory 10-game suspension.

Footage from the dugout would show that German — who was perfect in his three innings — clearly had some substance on his pant leg. It definitely was not rosin and sweat — let’s just say that.

The Yankees were adamant that they did nothing wrong during Monday’s game, which had Judge calling out the Blue Jays broadcast. But German didn’t do them any favors by evidently cheating with an intense microscope on the Yankees.

Fans — Twins fans, especially — weren’t kind to the Yankees after Tuesday’s ejection.

Umps oddly let the Yankees’ Domingo Germán stay in the game despite him failing substance check

He got caught cheating and didn’t get ejected.

Yankees pitcher Domingo Germán was dominant in Saturday’s 6-1 win against the Minnesota Twins. He struck out 11 batters in 6.1 innings, allowing just one run on three hits. But his day probably should have ended much earlier.

After Germán started the game with three perfect innings, the umpiring crew led by crew chief James Hoye did the customary check for foreign substances. And that’s when they noticed an unusual amount of rosin or sticky stuff on Germán’s hand. Germán could have been ejected right there, but he was allowed to wash his hands and stay in the game.

Yet, Twins manager Rocco Baldelli couldn’t believe it when Germán was checked again in the fourth inning and was still allowed to stay in the game despite the foreign substance remaining on his hand.

The broadcast slowed down the conversation with the umpires, and we could see that Germán was told to wash his hands. Baldelli was understandably furious with the leniency that Germán was being showed in that situation as MLB rules call for the pitcher to get ejected if a foreign substance is detected. Instead, it was Baldelli who got ejected.

MLB fans also couldn’t believe that Germán was allowed to stay in the game.

The Astros are looking to bounce back after last night’s 7-3 loss to the Yankees and will send out Luis Garcia tonight, who has not been great and is 0-3 on the season. Meanwhile, the Yankees will look to keep their four-game winning streak in tack. They will be countering with Jordan Montgomery to help curb the bats of the Astros for a second straight game.

I’d expect this game to be high-scoring again tonight, here is everything you need to know to catch the action this afternoon.

Yankees woes continue with disastrously painful first inning against Cleveland

What a miserable start for New York.

In case you haven’t heard, the New York Yankees are a disaster of a baseball team right now. Coming into Thursday, the Yankees were 6-11 on the year with six losses in their last seven games. Just one week ago, fans were so upset with the team that a game was halted after baseballs were thrown onto the field in disgust.

If the Yankees thought about possibly turning a corner on Thursday, they got off to a miserable start against the Cleveland Indians. In the first inning alone, New York made numerous thoughtless mistakes that gave Cleveland a 3-0 inning off the hop.

Those highlights — or lowlights, if you’d prefer — include:

  • Brett Gardner missing a routine catch in left field.
  • A ball sneaking through Mike Ford at first for an infield hit.
  • Pitcher Domingo German fumbling a softly hit ball to allow a Cleveland run to score.

The German mishap was especially egregious, as everyone remained safe — and Cleveland doubled their score! — on a play that very well should have ended the inning.

The damage at the end of the first for the Yankees was a 3-0 deficit and a cacophony of errors that were excruciatingly painful to watch. Not only that, New York has not been able to overcome a three-run deficit to win a ball game this season.

Things just keep on going from bad to worse in New York, it seems.
