Russell Wilson: DK Metcalf is ‘the best in the world at what he does’

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson gushed over wide receiver DK Metcalf, calling him “the best in the world at what he does.”

It should be obvious by now, but DK Metcalf has blossomed into one of the best wide receivers in the NFL in just 18 games.

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson joined reporters on a Zoom call on Thursday to gush about his young star receiver.

“He’s the best in the world at what he does,” Wilson said. “He’s continued to evolve into one of the best receivers in the game. Not to be shy about it, I think he is one of the top receivers in the game. He can do it all – he can run by you, he can jump over you, he can get physical with you.

“He just approaches the game the right way.”

Despite a few missteps along the way, such as occasional drops and that inexcusable gaffe against the Cowboys in Week 3, his development has been hugely positive, especially considering he is only in his second season in the league.

Coach Pete Carroll stated that Metcalf is learning from his mistakes and striving to be the best player and team contributor he can possibly be.

“He has dedicated himself to finding every competitive way he can to get as good as he can get,” Carroll said. “He’s just opened up the world to being a great player for us.”

Metcalf currently has 16 receptions for 403 receiving yards and three touchdowns over four games this season. He is on track for 64 receptions for 1,612 yards and 12 touchdowns on the year.

Second-year jump? Oh, yes.

DK Metcalf making case for Russell Wilson as 2020 MVP

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf is busy making the case for his quarterback Russell Wilson as this year’s Most Valuable Player.

The Seattle Seahawks beat the Miami Dolphins 31-23 on Sunday to move to 4-0 on the season. A majority of the thanks should go to Russell Wilson, and wide receiver DK Metcalf is going to make sure his QB gets the respect he deserves.

“I mean, just look at his stats,” Metcalf told reporters after the win. “He’s thrown for 300-plus yards [in three games]. He has a boatload of touchdowns. Only threw two picks. I’m sorry for one of them that he threw today. I mean, his stats speak for themselves. He’s a great leader, a great role model.”

Metcalf wasn’t too shabby himself on Sunday, logging four receptions for 106 yards on six targets. He’s now making the push for Wilson as this year’s Most Valuable Player.

“Any fourth-quarter comeback, when he’s our quarterback, there’s not a doubt that we’re going to win,” Metcalf continued. “I mean, just look at his track record. It’s going to speak for itself, so I’m putting out Russ for MVP this year.”

Metcalf will help Wilson continue his campaign for MVP next Sunday night at home against the Vikings.

Dolphins CB Byron Jones looking more unlikely to play in Week 4

Dolphins CB Byron Jones looking more unlikely to play in Week 4

If the Miami Dolphins are going to get their defensive secondary back at full strength for Week 4 against the Seattle Seahawks, they’re running out of time to make it happen. The Dolphins have both cornerbacks Byron Jones and Xavien Howard listed on the team’s injury report as of yesterday — although Howard is a limited participant in practice and should play so long as there are no significant flareups.

Jones, on the other hand, is not looking promising for Miami. The high-priced cornerback signed in Miami this offseason — landing what was a record-setting contract at the time of his agreement in Miami. And through three weeks, Jones has missed more time than he’s played on account of an ugly looking groin injury suffered on the opening possession of Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills. It shouldn’t have surprised anyone to see Miami hold out Jones against Jacksonville in Week 3 on a short week — but the Dolphins could most definitely use Jones’ services this week to help combat Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson and company.

But if Jones isn’t physically ready to go, he is isn’t physically ready to go. It puts Miami in a challenging spot, given that Jones would be the perfect assignment for Seahawks WR DK Metcalf. That role will now presumably go to Dolphins CB Xavien Howard, presuming he can indeed play on Sunday against Seattle. Rookie Noah Igbinoghene is likely to get the call against the “other” Seattle wide receiver, Tyler Lockett.

Igbinoghene’s selection in the 2020 NFL Draft certainly surprised some Dolphins fans, but given the durability concerns of Howard and the untimely injury to Byron Jones, it looks like a critical selection already after just his first month as an NFL player. There are ups and downs to be had and experienced — Week 4 against Lockett figures to be the next lesson for Igbinoghene on the gridiron.

Watch: Russell Wilson connects with DK Metcalf for game-winning TD

Russell Wilson hit DK Metcalf to complete a thrilling victory for the Seahawks over the Cowboys.

Russell Wilson has been on fire for Seattle.

After his five-TD performance in the Seahawks’ 38-31 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, Wilson has 14 in the first three games of the season.

The big one against Dallas was a beauty, connecting with DK Metcalf late in the fourth quarter for the lead and a two-point conversion followed to make it a seven-point game.

The play by Metcalf made up for a gaffe in the first half when he let up approaching the end zone and had the ball popped out from behind and threw the end zone for a touchback.

D.K. Metcalf’s early celebration before the goal line costs the Seahawks a touchdown

Play to the whistle.

If there’s one play that will absolutely drive a football coach into a fit of rage, it’s when a player fumbles while celebrating before the goal line.

It’s almost shocking that this mistake happens at the highest levels of football, but sometimes players don’t expect the opponent to continue max effort through the end of a play. And, well, that assumption certainly came back to bite D.K. Metcalf on Sunday.

During the Seahawks’ Week 3 matchup against the Cowboys, Russell Wilson connected with Metcalf on a brilliant pass. Everything about that play was perfect until Metcalf started jogging towards the end zone with the football exposed.

With Metcalf letting up on the play, Trevon Diggs continued his pursuit and punched the football out of Metcalf’s hands (and out of the back of the end zone) for a touchback.

Metcalf thought he had everyone beat and didn’t expect Diggs at all. The turnover had plenty of NFL fans in disbelief. It should also have an impact in a ton of fantasy leagues.

The Dallas Cowboys secondary got burned again in Week 3. After a bomb touchdown to Tyler Lockett earlier in the first quarter, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson decided to get second-year pro DK Metcalf in on the action.

A move sent corner Trevon Diggs’ hand to the ground and opened up plenty of room, when Wilson heaved it up to the formidable receiver. Only he began celebrating the touchdown too early and Diggs recovered to close in inside the 10-yard line. A punch Charles “Peanut” Tilman would be proud of knocked the ball out and threw the end zone for a touchback.

The game continues locked up at 9 each.

Daily Fantasy: The one Seahawks player you need to start in Week 3 on DraftKings

There’s one Seattle Seahawks player that you have to start in DraftKings for Week 3.

The one Seattle Seahawks player you need to start in Week 3 on DraftKings is wideout DK Metcalf.

“He’s one of the best receivers in the game. He’s like a 10-year veteran Pro Bowler.”

That’s what Russell Wilson said about Metcalf after the first week of the 2020 NFL season. Now through two weeks, Metcalf has eight receptions for 187 yards and two touchdowns, leading the team in receiving yards and leading the WR group in touchdowns.

Right now, Metcalf is the No. 7 scoring WR in fantasy and he’s played all but one offensive snap for the Seahawks through the first two weeks of the season. While Metcalf hasn’t seen a high target volume with only 14 targets through two weeks, he makes up for it with his crazy 23.4 yards per reception average. His average depth of target is 14.8 yards, putting him as the main downfield threat for Seattle.

The Dallas Cowboys, who Seahawks face in Week 3, have surrendered 536 passing yards to opponents this season. They really struggle to defend downfield threats like Metcalf, allowing 100-yard performances to both Robert Woods and Calvin Ridley in back-to-back weeks. Things only get worse as Dallas will be down two of their starting cornerbacks in Week 3. They’re also tied with New Orleans Saints for the eighth fewest pressures in the NFL, which means Wilson should have all day to sit back and throw.

At $6,500 in DraftKings, there are cheaper plays than Metcalf, but his potential for a monster performance against the Cowboys is just too good to pass up in Week 3.

Stephon Gilmore explains why he got so chippy with DK Metcalf

This matchup was fierce and physical.

Stephon Gilmore and DK Metcalf had an extremely physical matchup during the Seattle Seahawks’ 35-30 win over the New England Patriots in Week 2. Metcalf’s performance affirmed what was already becoming clear: he’s emerging as one of the toughest marks in the NFL, especially with Russell Wilson at quarterback. Metcalf had four catches for 92 yards and a 54-yard touchdown.

Perhaps as a product of the physicality, the matchup between Gilmore and Metcalf was a chippy one. There was plenty of hand fighting after the whistle, including some on the sideline in the third quarter after Chris Carson rushed for 13 yards. When Gilmore and Metcalf went to the ground after the whistle, they started a scrum that involved most of the Seahawks’ bench, including Pete Carroll, who tried to separate the two stars, who resorted to grabbing each other by the face mask.

“Just two players competing,” Gilmore said when asked about their dustup. “I felt like he was blocking me after the whistle. Just trying to keep my poise. Playing very physical between the lines and sometimes that’s what goes on.”

Gilmore was asked specifically about matching with Metcalf.

“Russell Wilson is a great quarterback,” Gilmore said.

So, perhaps, there’s still some tension between the two.

Metcalf’s touchdown seemed to be the turning point. That’s when the physicality between the two players seemed to escalate, with Gilmore hitting the receiver hard on a number of misfires. It seems like both parties were guilty of chippy play. Both players put together a solid performance, even if the stat line clearly favored Metcalf.

“There was a lot of extra nonsense honestly with all the after the whistle stuff,” safety Devin McCourty told reporters after the game. “Guy (Metcalf) is a good player, Steph (Gilmore) is obviously one of the best players in this league, so just competition. One deep ball where Steph is in good coverage and he comes down with a really good catch and other than that those guys were just competing out there.”

Seahawks QB Russell Wilson thinks he’s the best quarterback in the NFL

Seattle Seahawks signal-caller Russell Wilson believes he is the best quarterback in the National Football League.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson believes he’s the best quarterback in the NFL. Wilson made the bold statement recently on The Dan Patrick Show.

“Do I think I’m the best quarterback in the NFL? I believe so, without a doubt,” Wilson answered when asked. “But there are some great ones for sure.”

Wilson made a strong case for himself Week 1 against the Falcons, throwing for 322 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also had as many touchdowns as incompletions, and one of those incompletions was a drop by wide receiver DK Metcalf on a pass thrown right to him.

With the exception of Kansas City Chiefs signal-caller Patrick Mahomes, it is indeed difficult to think of a better QB than Wilson right now. However, Wilson will have to consistently turn in solid performances for Seattle to have a chance at Super Bowl LV.

Wilson and Seattle square off against the Patriots Sunday night at 5:20 p.m. PT.
