All Studs and No Duds in Seahawks 37-27 win over 49ers

The Seattle Seahawks inked a divisional win Week 8 at home against the rival San Francisco 49ers – here are the studs from the game.

The Seattle Seahawks bounced back from last week’s disappointing loss in a big way, as they dominated their division rivals – the San Francisco 49ers – to the tune of 37-27 on Sunday afternoon.

This game was never as close as the final score might indicate, as the Seahawks were up 30-7 to start the fourth quarter. San Francisco may have scored 20 fourth-quarter points, but they were the definition of “garbage” points as the game was clearly decided.

Seattle earned revenge over the Niners from their Week 17 home loss last year and snapped a four-game losing streak to NFC West opponents. As a result, here are four Studs and No Duds.

Seahawks Peak Performer Week 8: Wide receiver DK Metcalf

For his impressive efforts against the San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf is our Peak Performer Week 8.

The Seattle Seahawks beat the San Francisco 49ers Week 8 at CenturyLink Field to maintain control of the division. The win was made possible in part by our Seahawks Peak Performer of the game – wide receiver DK Metcalf.

Metcalf posted another banner outing, finishing the day as the team’s leading receiver with 12 receptions on 15 targets for 161 yards (long of 46) and two touchdowns. He got three times as many looks as wide receiver Tyler Lockett.

Through seven games played, Metcalf has amassed 35 catches for 680 yards and seven scores.

“What a fantastic game he played,” coach Pete Carroll said after the victory. “Just so tough and so physical. Just a dominant player out there today. Had a couple touchdowns and then big plays – just one right after the other.”

The only player who can catch DK Metcalf in the open field is DK Metcalf

The only player who can catch Seattle Seahawks wide receiver, DK Metcalf, in the open field is DK Metcalf.

The most remarkable play in the Seahawks’ 37-34 overtime loss to the Cardinals last Sunday night was Seattle receiver DK Metcalf’s chasedown of Arizona safety Budda Baker as Baker thought he was on the way to a pick-six of Russell Wilson. The 5-foot-10,. 195-pound Baker was on the way to just that, until the 6-foot-4, 233-pound Metcalf — who ran a 4.33 40-yard dash at the 2019 scouting combine — ended that threat with an unbelievable run-down.

Fast-forward (and we do mean FAST-forward) to this Sunday, and here’s Metcalf knifing through the 49ers’ defense for a 46-yard touchdown:

Oh, and then there was this 35-yarder to Metcalf later in the first half, in which 49ers cornerback Emmanuel Moseley was just blazed out of the picture.

It would appear that the only person who can catch DK Metcalf in the open field is DK Metcalf.

NFL Next Gen Stats simulates race between Tyreek Hill, DK Metcalf and Daniel Jones

You know who wins this race, Chiefs Kingdom.

Who is the fastest man in the NFL?

NFL Next Gen Stats sought to answer this question yesterday, simulating a race between three players. One of those players is Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill, who has held the undisputed title as the fastest man in the NFL for a few years now.

NFL Next Gen Stats pit Hill against an interesting pair of newcomers that had standout plays recently. Seahawks WR DK Metcalf made a tremendous play showcasing blazing speed, chasing down an interception return from behind. The final player involved in this race is none other than Giants QB Daniel Jones, who had a breakaway TD in Week 7 but got tackled by the turf monster as he hit his top speed.

So how did the simulation work exactly? Here is how NFL Next Gen Stats explained it:

“Using each player’s speed and acceleration over the course of the fastest play of their careers, we found comparable starting points to simulate a 10-yard, 40-yard and 75-yard race.”

This is how they calculated the “comparable starting point” for the race:

“All three players were traveling approximately 12 MPH in a straight-line direction at our hypothetical starting point, and each player traveled at least 75 yards of distance before a sharp decline in speed.”

Without further ado, which of these three players wins the race? Of course, it’s Hill. Check out the simulation down below:

Perhaps my favorite part of all of this is that Hill’s play didn’t even come at a time where he had the football. It came from the play where he chased down Damien Williams from behind against the Vikings in 2019.

Fans may be clamoring for a race between Hill and Metcalf, but this tells the tale right here. Hill is still the fastest man in the NFL and Metcalf is a close second. It’ll take something really special to unseat Hill as such.

Steve Kerr has high praise for D.K. Metcalf’s touchdown-saving tackle in Seahawks vs. Cardinals

Steve Kerr had high praise for D.K. Metcalf’s incredible touchdown-saving tackle in the Seahawks vs. Cardinals Sunday Night Football tilt.

On Sunday night, Seattle Seahawks wide receiver D.K. Metcalf made a play that had the sports world buzzing.

While the second-year pass catcher is known for his ability to take the top off defenses with his blend of electric speed and size, Metcalf’s standout play came while making a tackle.

In the second quarter of the Seahawks Sunday Night Football matchup against the Arizona Cardinals, MVP front runner Russell Wilson threw a rare errant pass that was intercepted by Budda Baker. As the Pro Bowl safety made his break in the opposite direction with a clear path to the endzone, Metcalf showed off his 4.3 speed.

With an impressive effort, Metcalf was able to run down Baker after sprinting nearly the length of the field. The Ole Miss product’s tackle at the two-yard line saved what looked like a no doubt pick-six touchdown for the Cardinals.

Following the chase-down tackle, the head coach of the Golden State Warriors had high praise for Metcalf. On Twitter, Steve Kerr called Metcalf’s tackle “one of the most incredible things” he’s ever seen in sports.

Along with Kerr, Golden State forward Draymond Green had a shoutout for the Seattle Seahawks pass catchers on Twitter.

Next week, Metcalf and the Seahawks will host Golden State’s Bay Area neighbor, the San Francisco 49ers. Kyle Shanahan, Jimmy Garoppolo, George Kittle and the Niners will suit up against Wilson’s Seahawks in a critical division matchup on Sunday in Seattle at 1:25 P.M. PST.

The All-22 angles of DK Metcalf’s tackle of Budda Baker are truly epic

If you thought DK Metcalf’s tackle of Budda Baker was amazing before, wait until you see the All-22!

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll called it “one of the best plays I’ve ever seen.” When Russell Wilson threw an interception to Cardinals safety Budda Baker with 9:31 left in the first half, it looked to all the world that Baker had a long pick-six in front of him. But Baker did not count on the effort of Seattle receiver DK Metcalf, who, at 6-foot-4 and 233 pounds, chased down the 5-foot-10, 195-pound Baker, saving a touchdown. The Cardinals failed to score on the subsequent drive, though they won the game in overtime, 37-34.

Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury was also impressed, saying that his guy had a score “until that huge stallion of a human came galloping out of nowhere. Phenomenal anticipation by [Baker]. DK Metcalf is an absolutely freak athlete, and what an effort play by him.

“High school coaches will be showing that one for years — just don’t give up on a play,”

Wilson, who threw three interceptions on the night, was uniquely grateful.

“It was one of the most remarkable plays I’ve ever seen,” Wilson said postgame. “He just kept going, man. It was just unbelievable play by him, just the effort. I really respect him for that. That’s what it takes, just a winning effort.

“He’s one of the best players in the league, he’s one of the most special guys I know, he’s one of my best friends, and I really respect him,” Wilson added. “Not just because of his effort on that particular play, but that’s who he is, that’s who he is, every day. He’s consistent in that way, so that’s what I love him for.”

When you watch the overhead and end zone angles of the play, courtesy of NFL Game Pass, it’s even more remarkable.

Especially on the end zone angle, where Metcalf (No. 14) is barely on the screen when Baker takes the ball. It’s a superhuman effort and one of the most amazing plays in NFL history, and it deserves to be watched from every possible angle.
