Who was the Tar Heels’ greatest football gain and loss in transfer portal?

Plenty of football players have transferred in and out of UNC this offseason. Who was the biggest addition and greatest loss?

The transfer portal is one of the biggest debate topics in college football.

There’s so many positives to the portal: it allows kids to see more playing time elsewhere, suit up closer to home and play for coaches who initially recruited them, but moved schools.

There’s also plenty of negatives, with the most pressing one being that college football feels a lot more like free agency now. This is accentuated by NIL earnings, as student-athletes can transfer to a larger school to make more off their deals. I am all about these young men and women making money, but collegiate sports become increasingly professionalized by the day.

The North Carolina Tar Heels have lost several players to the transfer portal this offseason, including 2023 starting left tackle Diego Pounds. They’ve also gained a few, including former Texas A&M and LSU quarterback Max Johnson.

Let’s take a brief look at UNC’s greatest transfer portal gain and loss, which – according to college football recruiting expert Mike Farrell – are Johnson and Pounds.

“Veteran QB Max Johnson is expected to start after Drake Maye declared for the NFL Draft,” Farrell wrote. “Johnson was a backup in 2022 and 2023 at Texas A&M, but threw for 2,815 yards and 27 touchdowns with six interceptions, in 2021 at LSU.”

“Diego Pounds started eight games at left tackle and has two more seasons of eligibility,” Farrell said. “He will play for Ole Miss next year.”

Johnson is expected to battle for the starting quarterback spot with Conner Harrell, who backed up Maye and started the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in December. North Carolina has landed a couple offensive linemen to replace pounds, including TCU’s Howard Sampson.

Though football season doesn’t begin for another six months, we’re hoping for a solid first year post-Maye.

UNC loses starting left tackle to transfer portal

Losing a starting offensive lineman hurts, whether it’s to injury or the transfer portal. UNC lost its starting left tackle on Tuesday.

Drake Maye was one of the most talented quarterbacks in college football this year.

He was a Heisman Trophy contender at one point, before Carolina endured another annual, late-season collapse. Maye led the ACC and finished 12th nationally with 3,608 passing yards.

While UNC’s pass-catchers played a major role in Maye’s success, so did the offensive line.

Diego Pounds, just a sophomore in 2023, was the Tar Heels’ starting left tackle. For right-handed quarterbacks, left tackles are the most important players on the O-line.

This was Pounds’ first season starting on the line in Chapel Hill, but also his last.

On Thursday, Jan. 4, Pounds entered his name in the transfer portal.

Carolina needs every bit of offensive help it can get next year, with Maye and Devontez Walker leaving for the NFL. The Tar Heels will be employing a new quarterback in either Conner Harrell or Max Johnson, who transferred from Texas A&M with his brother, Jake.

Since UNC is projected to have just one starter returning to the offensive line next year, I imagine recruiting efforts will shift to that position group. Carolina is in the mix for Princeton transfer Jalen Travis – snagging him would be a huge win.

It has been over a month since Auburn landed its last football commitment but that could change Friday.

Three-star offensive tackle Diego Pounds will announce his decision at 3:30 EST. The Auburn target has Auburn, Penn State, North Carolina and LSU as his finalists and told 247Sports that he has, “Found my home. I felt like I fit there and it’s my type of people and i love the coaches and the program.”

Penn State is the 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite for the 6-foot-6, 305-pound Pounds who is the nation’s No. 38 offensive tackle, according to the 247Sports Composite.

He also previously talked with 247 about his final schools.

Auburn: “Auburn has a beautiful campus and they’re really good in football and me and Coach (Jack) Bicknell have a connection going. I just like Auburn. Auburn grabs my attention.”

LSU: “Defending National Champs, great facilities, great people and I’m from down South. SEC is the best football, I love to compete and that’s where you can go compete.”

North Carolina: “They’re cool right now. Mack Brown is a legend. Can’t go wrong with that and all my boys are committed there.”

Penn State: “The offensive line coach, it’s a connection that’s just insane. From a football standpoint they’re good and academic standpoint they’re great and the fanbase is crazy.”
