Tennessee Tech head coach Dewayne Alexander recaps Golden Eagles’ performance against Vols

Tennessee Tech head coach Dewayne Alexander recaps Golden Eagles’ performance against the Vols.

Tennessee Tech (0-3) lost at Tennessee (2-1), 56-0, Saturday at Neyland Stadium.

Following the Golden Eagles’ loss, Tennessee Tech head coach Dewayne Alexander met with media and recapped his team’s performance.

“Give credit to Tennessee,” Alexander said. “They’re a very good football team. I thought (Hendon) Hooker, the quarterback came in and played outstanding. He played last week in the game. He came in and did some nice things. I’m very proud of our Golden Eagle team and their effort. We played hard. The biggest challenge that I gave our team is ‘We’re going to play with Golden Eagle pride. We’re going to play hard. We’re going to play all four quarters. We’re going to give great effort. We’re going to stay competitive. We’re going to compete every play. I thought our guys did that.

“Defensively, early on I couldn’t have been more pleased. They made some stops. We actually played good third down defense. Our problem was fourth down defense a few times in the first half. They converted some fourth downs to keep drives alive. We did have a big fourth down stop. We caused a fumble and returned the fumble down deep into their territory. We had a couple of scoring opportunities with a short field in the first half and weren’t able to get any points out of that. I think any field goal there in the first half would have been a big momentum thing for us and our football team. We came out in the second half and we did some things you cannot do. You can’t turn the football over the way that we did. Again, that’s something we’ve done three games in a row, is turn the football over deep in our territory. Giving any kind of football team a short field is always going to be tough. I thought our guys were excited to play. They were prepared to play. They came in, played hard and played with good effort. We just didn’t play well enough to win the football game.”

A look at how Dewayne Alexander’s Tennessee Tech coaching tree has spread to Josh Heupel, Lane Kiffin

A look at how Dewayne Alexander’s Tennessee Tech coaching tree has spread to Josh Heupel and Lane Kiffin in the SEC.

Tennessee Tech (0-2) will play at Tennessee (1-1) Saturday at Neyland Stadium.

Kickoff is slated for noon EDT. SEC Network+ will broadcast the in-state matchup.

Dewayne Alexander is in his fourth season as Tennessee Tech’s head coach.

During Alexander’s tenure at Tennessee Tech, he has formed staffs in which assistants have advanced careers to join Southeastern Conference positions.

From 2018-20, Tre Lamb served as Alexander’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Lamb is now serving as Gardner–Webb’s head coach.

Lamb has tailored his offensive philosophies and concepts from studying the likes of Appalachian State and Josh Heupel’s veer-and-shoot style.

“We’re Air Raid passing game,” Lamb said on the show “Football Two-A-Days” in January, two days before Heupel was hired as Tennessee’s head coach from Central Florida. “Air Raid principles with an inside power-running game. I do believe you got to run the ball to win games in certain situations. All our passing game is Air Raid principles.

“If you want to compare our offense to somebody, it probably would be a hybrid between Appalachian State and Central Florida. Those are two teams we study the most. I like the outside zone play that App. State runs and I like the way Central Florida formations you and throws the ball down the field. Those are the two teams we watch the most and cater our offense to our players.”

In 2019, Kelsey Pope served as Lamb’s wide receivers coach on Alexander’s Tennessee Tech staff.

Lamb hired Pope to serve as his passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach at Gardner-Webb. Pope would depart Gardner-Webb as Heupel hired him as an offensive analyst at Tennessee.

Lane Kiffin has implemented the Baylor, veer-and-shoot offense into his Ole Miss program with offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby, much like Heupel has done during his head coaching career.

Kiffin also hired an assistant from Tennessee Tech’s coaching staff that runs the similar scheme of Heupel and Lebby.

Jake Thornton is in his first season as Ole Miss’ offensive line coach after serving as run game coordinator and offensive line coach for Alexander at Tennessee Tech from 2018-19. Thornton followed Lamb and Pope to Gardner-Webb in 2020 as the Bulldogs’ run game coordinator and offensive line coach.

Dewayne Alexander previews Tennessee Tech’s spring season

Tennessee Tech will play a seven-game spring football season beginning Feb. 21.

Tennessee Tech will play a seven-game spring football season beginning Feb. 21.

The Golden Eagles did not play during the fall due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Third-year Tennessee Tech head coach Dewayne Alexander previewed the season on the show “Tennessee Two-A-Days.”

Alexander discussed how Tre Lamb, his offensive coordinator in 2019, took the head coaching position at Gardner-Webb and replacing him in 2021.

“I am very excited for Tre,” Alexander said. “He is an outstanding young coach and a reason I have been coaching for 30-plus years. I hired Tre and kind of gave him the keys to the car as a 29-year-old offensive coordinator. I worked with Tre previously, I’ve known Tre’s Dad. I knew Tre when he was a player here, and I was on the staff here when Watson Brown hired him right after he was finishing playing.

“I was brought here to work with Watson as offensive line coach and associate head coach, so I’ve gotten to know Tre very well. When I got the head coaching job, he was my first hire. He did a tremendous job here and a very bright, young coach.”

Lamb hired former Auburn player Kelsey Pope to serve as his passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach at Gardner-Webb. Pope will be part of Josh Heupel’s staff at Tennessee.

“I really gave Kelsey one of his first full-time jobs at the Division-1 level, an outstanding young coach as well,” Alexander said. “Those guys deserve all of the opportunities that they got.”

With the departure of Lamb, Alexander promoted Doug Malone as Tennessee’s Tech offensive coordinator in 2021.

“As far as us offensively, we are still going to be very similar,” Alexander said. “We are not changing terminology or anything because Doug Malone is taking over as our offensive coordinator.

“Doug is a very experienced coach and he was on our staff whenever I got hired. He was the second guy that I hired, so Doug was on the staff and worked alongside Tre the 2018 and 2019 seasons.”

Lamb previously joined the show “Tennessee Two-A-Days” ahead of the 2021 spring season. He discussed assembling his first coaching staff and offensive philosophies that he has studied from Heupel during his time as UCF’s head coach.

“We’re Air Raid passing game,” Lamb said.

Tennessee will host Tennessee Tech on Sept. 18 at Neyland Stadium during the Golden Eagles’ fall season.
